Great advice. Especially for the post race. I was ill in December and had to stop training for my half marathon and just felt gutted waiting to feel better to get back out. Having that mindset beforehand really does help set you up for a better start up. Now I'm back to training for the half in March.
Love your videos. I'm signed up for Banbury 15 miles in March, which will be the furthest I've ever run. Really need to start work on making a fueling decision and practicing it.
You've got plenty of time to experiment! I typically only practice a specific plan for the month leading up to a race, but I try EVERYTHING before that to see what works best for me in that season. Gels, food, etc. Good luck!
Great advice, really 👍 I’m training for a sub 1:45 half marathon, it’s going to be though running 21,1 Km at 4:57 Min/Km and also there is a slight climb half the race and then back down. It’s scary 😅 . But I’m training consistently, doing my key sessions, long runs, etc. Still when you push your limits it’s difficult to predict how it will go.
Remembering the time 22 years ago when I decided to enter a marathon on the day without having trained. Had 2 days of partying on the Friday and Saturday (it was my birthday and a bank holiday weekend) and a rehydration day on the Sunday. Ran 4:15 on the Monday. Couldn't do that now!
Top tips indeed, well done. I believe you have had the most direct and drama free path from new runner to a full resume, I'm proud of you and a bit envious. My first M word is exactly one month from today. Mixed feelings about the effectiveness of my training but I'm trusting the process. Thanks for educating us and entertaining us so well along the way.
I’m not exactly race ready but I’ve signed up to a 10k night race in just 2 weeks time. No PB expected but all part of my annual event planning. Can’t wait 😁
For all the races I've done over the years, it never occurred to me to plan my recovery beyond just a time frame! I actuality use recovery as a carrot when the race gets hard... "give it your all, leave nothing in the tank, it doesn't matter if it hurts, you've got 2 weeks off!!" Recovery is the 1 thing I'm absolutely terrible at, and now I realize it's because I didn't treat it as something that needed a plan like everything else. Thanks!
Like that last tip. After a half marathon last year I didn't have anything planned after working towards a target. Ended up signing up for 2 more half marathons (just 2 weeks apart from each other). A post event plan may be better next time.
I almost finished my training plan for my first half marathon. Covid hit me so now I am trying to slowly get myself back on track. Can you guys do a video on how to get back to training after an illness? And how not to get discouraged when you feel crap the first few runs? I am thinking of signing up for Amsterdam marathon 2022 as my first ever marathon!
Hi Suus, good to hear that you are recovering. We actually did a video on this topic last year, hopefully you'll find what you're looking for here: ruclips.net/video/Z2ld22LV_Fw/видео.html
I have my first marathon in April. Multi terrain. I did exactly what Sarah said not too and went at it full tilt week one. Total burn out. Taking it slower now. Lesson learned.
Top tip that I learned the hard way: if you do a loo stop 30 minutes before the start of the marathon, you might find that 15 minutes into the marathon you need to go again, especially if you've had a good amount of water to hydrate in the morning. You will spend precious time heeding nature's call when the clock has started ticking. So get your loo break in as short as possible before the start of the race. And remember that even if the race starts at 9:00, if you're not in the elite group at the front, your start will probably only be around 9:15-9:30, so plan your final loo stop accordingly.
15 weeks to go for 39th Vienna City Marathon - Half Marathon ... my first organized event. Looking forward to it! Since I cannot be first, I will try to be last 😄 to enjoy the cameras and interviews 🤣 maybe.
Omg, post race blues is a very real thing, I remember doing my 1st race (GNR) I’d worked so hard and that was all I’d focused on, I finished the GNR on a high, then the day after it hit me, I had nothing, I felt so deflated. I 2nd your advice, definitely have a plan for afterwards. Great video as always.
Completely agree. It's always hard to see past the race, but if you can plan something else for afterwards you always have races/events to look forward to :)
Doing Tarawera 50km next month! Post run life is pretty well booked! Planned a 50km trail run in March (not a race!) and have a winter trail half-marathon series 😁💪
Just started my Boston marathon training! Just under 14 weeks to go. Beyond excited!!! Is Anna running it this year?? I know she was gifted a place after Berlin. Would be great to see her there 😊😊
I have a question... How long should you leave it after a race before starting to train for another one? Is it ok to go straight into another training cycle, or should you leave it a few weeks? If its the latter, how much running should you do to keep yourself ticking over before getting into another training programme? Thanks for the videos!
I have only been running for six months and have done 5 parkruns so far.. I have just signed up for QECP 9k trail run, they do have a half marathon on the day but baby steps I’ll get there eventually 😁
So got the following marathons: Hamburg in April Helsinki and Copenhagen in May Stockholm in June Oslo in September NY in November. Yes, going for the Nordic countries this year. Hoping for London as well, butt 🤣🤣
It's a long time away, but I have my first Marathon in August. Going into training with my friend after track season, so that will make it much more enjoyable.
Berlin marathon from watching Anna's video (have only recently stumbled upon your channel). Fuelling (as a diabetic) will be important but looking forward to it.
Great advice. Even for some of us who've run quite a few events. Having a goal - so important. "why am I running around the highways and byways of my town?". If I am looking towards a particular long event I think it is important to have eg a half marathon race as part of one's marathon training. There is nothing like the whole race day experience to test oneself. A small practical tip: I recommend a race number belt or just 'converting' a cheap run belt (couple of holes, couple of pieces of elastic lace, toggle things et Voila) why? Safety pins in your smart running shirt? No! More importantly many events demand your number is visible at all times. If you may be taking on/off coat it is so much easier to merely move a belt than it is to mess about with anything else! 😀
My resolution is to run an actual official marathon in 2022, after doing it solo. But what puts me off is three things: 1) People, as I'm a bit of an introvert; 2) $$$ (NYC marathon is $300!); 3) Convenient hydration vests are still banned at most races due to Boston bombing security theater, but ironically has been re-allowed at more races due to crowding at aid stations wrt to COVID theater.
I ran the London Marathon in October and after finishingr was not going to run another marathon again. 😆. I am signed up to run the Edinburgh Marathon In May all being well.
Been offered a place at North Devon Half Marathon in June running for the Hospice that cared for my Mum (on what would be her 60th birthday!). I've only been running a year and am only running 5k's at the moment so this will be a challenge 😨
I've got a bigger question. Been training for a 28k trail run and what happens during the week before?...savage head cold. I am knocked for six. So here it is Thursday and I can't get out of bed.(not covid, been tested) I have a target time to qualify for another 45k race but if I still go for it there's a very good chance I won't finish. And that sucks. Do I just hope for a slower time to qualify for the same race next year or should I pull out? This sucks bigly.
That's unfortunate timing but with a week before, you should be looking at tapering anyway so our advice would be to take it easy, still train to stay in condition but conserve energy and rest to give yourself the best chance.
How did you know that the I would get a email from Berlin Marathon today? 🤔 😅 So happy and exited that I can run🎉 but now that I have a starting place What Do I do🙈😅 thanks for your help!
@@runningchannelThank you for the reply. Ohh :-( ... But then again hopefully he is doing even better than being able to walk to a picnic table ! :-). Look forward to the new Rickovery episode and wish him well x
Decided to kick the year off with four or five 10k events, but I'm keen to keep parkrunning. Accepting that running a fast 5k the day before an event is not a good idea (I made that mistake last year) does anyone know of an eight-week training plan that accommodates parkruns?
Where do I look these days for event details? In the good old pre-internet days I only needed to buy a magazine and there would be pages of events listed in the back. Also, it was far less commercial back then without all the expos and commercial pressures. I'd like to find low key events rather than be swamped by the fuss and bustle. Help, please.
Hi Michael, thanks for your question. We published a video last week highlighting some of our favourite events taking place in England and Wales in 2022. ruclips.net/video/pBFBf2Hygr8/видео.html You might find some inspiration there. Alternatively, you can find a fill list of events around the country, for a variety of distances through our partners Lets Do This. Check out their website for more: www.letsdothis.com/gb

I got an email today from the Berlin Marathon and I'm totally running it this year!!! 💪💪💪💪
Woohoo! You know where to look for tips on training for it.

Pittsburgh half marathon in May! I’m 62. Following the Garmin Galloway walk/run plan!
Best of luck Sybil! Keep us updated on your training progress.
