I would've loved to see the Pegasus rampaging through the Cylons and doing things the Galactica simply couldn't. The Viper factories on board were critical assets by themselves. Fat Adama threw away their best asset to save a broken down museum ship, and to save his dad. Pure selfishness.

@@Daginni1 cylon's ran off simulation and predictive analysis. All of the Cylon's ability to predict were based off sacrificing the Galactica and saving the Mercury as a vital asset, they forgot they are facing humans who don't always play "save the assets." And that Mercury made them rethink everything. (again.) Also removing Adama Sr. from the playing board was worth losing 4 basestars. It was a question of saving the larger body or the better brain.

While the Mercury class is good and has it's strengths, I reckon it was ultimately the right ship to be sacrificed... just not the correct way to sacrifice it, but I won't digress...
While Peagsus is a newer ship with more functionality it has one draw back. Lack of fleet support.
Cain is the clincher. She kissed the right boots and had a famous family history... But was deemed predictable as other BS commanders could dance rings around her in mock battles. Thus Cain was given Pegasus. A BS in name but in reality was a support BS in that it held the means of production to continue long term offensives if planet bound static targets were destroyed... or political battles resulted in the lack of war support from one of the 12 colonies. Pegasus could fill that niche, but you never want your production ships on the front line, even if it is a BS. If the fabricators are destroyed or damaged you lose long term survivability for a fleet.
The advantage is, Pegasus can move and fight her way out of a situation, so she's less vulnerable to attack, but better that she not come under attack, can deliver long range barrages and have a fleet of ships to cover her and take the fight directly to the enemy. The Mercury class on paper is the better BS for the fleet Galactica sheparded but in a fight down to the wire... Galactica is a lean mean BS with everything about her intended to be useful in combat. Pegasus has to much junk in the trunk.
Now if Adama had taken Pegasus instead of Galactica maybe we would have seen Pegasus used competently... But Adama didn't know the Pegaus as well as he knew Galactica. He was wise in taking a ship he knew inside and out instead of Pegasus that he didn't know the limits of.

If you read the BSG comics, and novels they present some interesting pieces of information about the Mercury-class. For example, we find out that even though it's almost twice as big as the Jupiter class, the Mercury class's interior is mostly taken up by fabrication facilities (not weapons). So being bigger in this case is not necessarily an advantage. The Mercury class was considered a "test-bed" for new technologies (like on-board Viper factories), but was never intended to be mass produced as it was absurdly expensive.
Many Admirals considered the Mercury-class to be bloated, and preferred the cheaper Valkyrie-class, and refit Jupiter classes. Being posted to a highly expensive Mercury-class was considered a "prestige" post (but one with very little fleet authority). The Fleet Adrmirals stuck Admiral Cain on the Pegasus to "honor" her, but secretly they all thought she was crazy and unfit for commanding fleets. They wanted her someplace where she wouldn't be able to make important decisions.
We also find out about some ship war games that were carried out with the Pegasus against the smaller Valkyrie class. Admiral Cain ended up actually losing in the war games repeatedly against older smaller battlestars. The reason? Because she was incredibly inflexible, and not able to adapt to changing/unconventional tactics. She was too by the book. Other Captains, and ship commanders secretly made fun of her for inability to win with a larger more modern ship. So yeah, the BSG books and comics are interesting. You should read them.

Fun thing, with meters of armor you would be able to tank a nuke that wasnt producing a shockwave. Nukes would be devastating if inserted into the enemy like a W23 naval round inside the armor, but exploding on their surface they actually wouldnt be to terribly effective against a sledge like the Mercury.

    • @marcusanton95

The temperature in the core of our sun is usually cited at 15 million degrees Celsius or so. Some mid-sized thermonuclear test detonations done by the old Soviet Union and the USA have been recorded at (if only very briefly) 200 or even 300 million degrees Celsius. That will vaporize the thickest of armor if it's a near miss or direct hit.
Don't believe what a science fiction tells you about physics. Especially one that is not attempting to be realistic.
Shockwave formation in low density environments are destructive.
For example, the shock can be propagated by photons interacting with electrons, by a distribution of high energy particles or by magnetic effects. So, shock waves are actually quite common in space. Interplanetary shock waves can occur due to solar flares. ‘Bow shocks’ are formed by the interaction of the solar wind with planetary magnetospheres. Supernovae create powerful shocks, both within the star collapsing to form the explosion and also moving through the interstellar medium itself. Interstellar shocks can also occur simply by the collision or collapse of gas clouds. Black holes, high-density objects such as pulsars, as well as merging galaxies (and even just the motion of galaxies themselves) are also known to form shock waves of various forms.

SG1 basically took the same approach to their ships, of course they added shields which are not beyond our science. Although, we've not been able to engulf objects larger than a few atoms. The concept has been proven, energy needs are insane, and the radiation would cook the crew. Other than that, we're golden.

Kirk Douglas' ( Michael Douglas) father was spartcus, and patton was played, but George c Scott ..

I'm always down to seeing both of those whenever possible. Shame also that we didn't get one of the Warstar class ships in that game. I did always think it was odd that they essentially only had 2 types of combat aircraft.
You have the vipers, which gonna viper. Basically the end all fighter.
(Yeah, they had a stealth recon version too.)
Then you have the raptor. A scifi huey, and occasional gunship. That tracks.
But its also an EW platform, tanker, c and c, and a few other things that escape me at the moment.
It just feels weird that they would never have hit on the concept of a purpose built specialist plane.
Somehow they had a maxed out corydora that can do everything, anytime, for any reason.

Perhaps someone knows, thx in advance for such an information.

Nuclear weapons in space don't do as much damage as on a planet. The nuke needs to burrow into a ship tp give maximum damage to a ship. A nuke exploding on the hull of an armored ship only gives 1/8 energy connection to the ship including hard radiation. This is because the nuke explodes in an spear shape with most of the radiation not hitting the ship. Shape charges in warheads would be more useful hitting a ship.

In the RUclips video, Battlestar Galactica: Razor | Hit The Ground Running, ( ruclips.net/video/vwsK-dJ1drs/видео.html ) it shows the front two main engines firing up and starting their burn to get Pegasus out of the space dock during the initial Cylon attack. They're strong enough to break the docking arms that were still holding Pegasus. You can get an idea on just how maneuverable this thing is, as big / bulky as it is, as it just starts getting away from the shipyard.

Pegasus was equipped with what was called a V.I. (Virtual Intelligence) that pushed VERY close to being in violation of the laws regarding Artificial Intelligence. Basically a string of commands, or a firewall away from being declared illegal by the Colonial Government and especially the Adar Administration. It was said he was a staunch traditionalist during his tenure as Caprica City's Mayor. He also made the ill fated decision not to mandate FTL drives for all Colonial ships. Because of this, tens of thousands more died needlessly due to lack of FTL jump ability.
Speaking of which, it was also said the Pegasus had a FAR more capable jump ability than any other Battlestar up to that date. Capable of jumping beyond the "Red Line" and going into unexplored space. This ship would have been the one to keep during the long voyage of Galactica and it's fleet. Also, and this is non-canonical, it was said to be selected after Galactica's decommissioning to testbed the new "Jump missiles/FTL warheads". Missiles that could have jumped to a preselected target and just basically obliterate a ship light years away. And also, since Pegasus was more than a mile long, it had full Viper VII/Raptor/Foundry and factory capability as long as resources could be found. And finally, some of the best research and development labs available off colony. So newer technology could not only be fitted, but developed and implemented as well off planet. The first of a well rounded Battlestar/Exploration ship that could have been the herald for a new age of Starship development for the United Colonies of Kobol.

Would not be too difficult to armour a ship from the blast of a Nuke in space tbh. Its in a vacuum. Nuclear blasts, like all blasts, do not propagate in a vacuum. Period. They do not. It requires an ATMOSPHERE to propagate the blast effects of a nuclear weapon, and last time I looked the vastness of space was kind of lacking an atmosphere....
Radiation effects? Now thats a different story, but then several metres of armour would do just nicely to stop any radiation entering the internals of the ship....
The ONLY time a nuke would work against a space ship, is if you managed to get one to penetrate the vessel then detonate when there is still enough atmo inside to propagate the blast. Otherwise... forget it. Not happening.

Sidenote: A handgun is also often called a pistol or sidearm. The defining characteristic of a handgun is that you can hold and wield it effectively with one hand. These days, most military style assault rifles (including the AR-15) have a pistol grip, which just means that the grip is nearly at a right angle to the stock and barrel, to help the wielder absorb recoil during rapid fire, but they are still classified as long guns. Basically nobody is trying to restrict the sale of handguns.

And that the government more or less gets a free check written to just spend as much as it feels like or say that it spent as much as it felt like yet under deep dives and investigations we constantly find people who took their positions of trust in bureaucratic power to feather their own nest at the cost and expense of the taxpayer. Defense spending though necessary is a spot where you could definitely see where our budget far exceeds what the cost probably is. Let's assume you paid every member of the are active military $100,000 a year which we most certainly don't and let's assume that our current military is 1.2 million strong. That comes to 120 billion dollars. And yet we have a 1 trillion per year budget. Did we spend that much on fuel did we get that many more tanks for that many more planes every single year? The best way to look at bureaucracy is just like human resources at your local job they don't like you or care about you and they only care about themselves and the company The moment that you prove to be a liability in any way they will not only cut ties but also make sure that you're set with the bill. Earlier references were to the ATF redefining what it thought things were which it's not able to and in fact it's getting difficult to accept that some people are more than willing to redefine things altogether and close their eyes when they are met with a straight fact in front of them.
