    The shock will need to go to the softest setting for preload and take all the fork preload out as well as a starting point. Add preload as you brake to stop dive under initial braking.

    change the suspension fluids as follows: - forks at 5-7,000 miles and the shock every 10-12,000 miles. Brake fluid every 2 months and clean & lube (and adjust if needed) every 300 miles or after every rain ride.

    you should have 3.75 to 4" of fork chrome tube exposed when you sit on the bike (to account for mechanical bottom out). The rear sag should be 10mm of free sag and 25mm of rider sag.

    The rear shock preload was in the stock position. This was a showroom bike, all OEM settings.

      FWIW, I believe stock position is #2 on the ramp adjuster. Thank you for the heads up on the mechanical bottom out 25mm. I notice that my 2008 600RR front feels much softer than my 1000RR yet I get more travel on the 1000RR.

  • @SportbikeWrench
    @SportbikeWrench  11 лет назад +1

    Yes, that's a issue. Measure the rebound adjuster height above the preload cap all the way out. Is one longer than the other? If so get them even, then count from there and the rebound will be the same in each leg per damping settings.

  • @SportbikeWrench
    @SportbikeWrench  12 лет назад

    set the fork sag to 30mm and rear sag to 25mm (soft rear springs). You should respring the forks and shock with your weight. Set fork rebound at 1 turn out and fork compression at .75 of a turn out. Shock compresison at 5 clicks out and shock rebound at 1 turn out.

    The front springs are fine, the rear spring does need to be stiffer based on your weight and riding style/use of the bike. The assessment is correct.

  • @SportbikeWrench
    @SportbikeWrench  11 лет назад +1

    set compression and rebound at 1.25 turns out on the forks. Comp at 6 clicks out on the shock and rebound at 1.75 turns out on the shock. Please make a donation through my tip jar for the settings on the feelthetrack home page as this is how I keep going with my business.

  • @SportbikeWrench

    At your weight I would go with .85kg fork springs and 85kg shock spring to balance the bike out. Set sag at 35 front 30 rear.

  • @SportbikeWrench
    @SportbikeWrench  12 лет назад

    change the fork oil right away with 10w Honda fork oil. Set fork sag to 35mm and shock sag to 30mm. Fork rebound and compression at 1 turn out and shock rebound at 6 clicks out with rebound at 1.25 turns out.

    I have a book in the works for next spring. I was just at Cycle Gear in PDX and looking to come back next month to the same location. Check in with Matt and Brian for the August date! We should have it confirmed in a week or so. If I have a date open, I would be at PIR in a heart beat. Got my expert license with OMRRA in 95 :)

    Thank you so much!
    Dave you need to write a book! Do u ever come to Portland International Raceway? One of my friends who used to hit the tracks regularly told me others can work on them but "Get Dave to set your suspension because he knows his ****!".

  • @SportbikeWrench
    @SportbikeWrench  12 лет назад

    Sag would be 30mm in the front and rear of the bike as the forks bottom out long before the axle casting. Fork oil should be changed every 7500km and the shock oil every 15000km

    all suspension being reviewed needs to be applied to rider weight and type of use, plus rider ability. With 1.0kg springs in the front, a light rider at 140lbs is going to have a harsh ride even with all the preload and compression out, so the springs would need to be changed to their weight. Assess, review, make the changes needed to create a safer and more enjoyable motorcycle for you.

    Dave, this is a great video. I'm a relatively new rider--been riding about a year--and I was wondering what the settings would be for an 09 bike with about 1000 miles on it. I'm 6'5" and weight 240 lbs in gear. Not sure if it matters, but my bike is an ABS model. Thanks!

    Hey Dave,
    It's from 2007 , i bought it with 8700 miles and now has 19000 miles ( only street race)
    i am about 210 lbs with gear.
    Thanks

    the back may feel stiff if the front is too soft due to soft fork preload. Your weight without gear?

    Change the fork and shock oil immediately and then set the fork sag to 30mm and rear sag to 25mm (soft rear springs). You should respring the rear shock with your weight. Set fork rebound at 1 turn out and fork compression at 1.5 turns out. Shock compression at 7 clicks out and shock rebound at 1 turn out.

  • @SportbikeWrench

    Take all the fork preload out and go back in 4 turns
    set rebound at 1.5 turns out
    set compression at 2 turns out
    Lower the shock preload 1 notch from stock (yellow dot)
    set compression at 10 clicks out
    set rebound at 1.5 turns out

    What’s the correct spanner wrench size to use for the rear shock adjustment. Bought my bike used and never got the spanner wrench that came with the bike.

    Its stock gearing, 12k miles on bike, suspension oil probably never changed and only a 2 brothers slip on for mods. Any advice is appreciated!

    So in the front, you compensate the anti-dive by allowing more sag? or reducing compression damping?

  • @jmy4750

    Dave i have been using your settings for my 600 f4i, sag is set and front end bounce is set but i have found to get the even response on the rear shock tension i have to take all the tension out for it to respond and it is still a little slow? does this mean i need a new rear shock? maybe you would do a suspension set up video on the 06 f4i someday! thanks Jim

      I noticed the same thing with my 2011 1000RR. Very slow rebound even with setting wide open. I swapped in a 2012 1000RR shock which is much improved, balance free and the problem is solved. Does yours rebound slow even wen the shock reservoir is good and hot?

    no, not unrideable - needs to have the suspension set correctly or the front or rear springs chnaged based on your weight.

    Hi Dave, thanks for posting vids like this! I'm 5'10 195lbs without gear, what do you recommend my front and rear rebound and compression be set at on my 08 600rr?

    • @LibertyDIY
      @LibertyDIY 7 лет назад

      You have to get sag set first, adjust preload to get in a good range of travel. Then bounce the bike while it is hot. You have to watch a bunch of Dave vids to see how he bounces front rear and whole bike and what he is looking for. Good luck

    Hi Dave,
    Would you please be kind enough to clarify something for me. I recently got my suspension tuned in the shop, but they didn't do what you did by looking at sag etc. I've been riding around for a while and I believe that the bike is a tad stiff at the back. The compression and rebound for both front and back is good. So if i decreased the preload at the back by 2 notches (its on 6 atm), will I have to redo the front and the comp and rebound? I ride a 09 cbr600rr, all stock.

    Hello Dave, i just bought a used 07 cbr 600. The previous owner told me that he had changed the fork oil at 15000km. The problem is that when i tried to adjust the rebound damping on them i found out that the adjustment range on the left leg is 3 turns while on the right is 3,5 turns. I guess that's the technician's error but will each fork have different rebound damping if i count the turns from full stiff?

      You can but it will handle badly (as would any bike). I just bought a 600RR that was lowered 1.5" in the front and it was quite bad when leaned over. Raised it back to stock height and feels much better.

    Was the rear shock preload maxed out in this video?

    • @LibertyDIY
      @LibertyDIY 7 лет назад

      Stock setting is position #2 on the ramp adjuster, so preload was set soft. However I do not think Dave is a big fan of using preload to address significant sag issues, but rather swap in the correct spring. If you are not willing or ready to swap springs I think adjusting preload is a good idea to get the bike as close to neutral/balanced as possible.
