Even with today's catalytics, they could split off from there to each side. Honda charges more than enough for these bikes& the CB1100. Retros are supposed to have FOUR exhaust pipes to the rear. I also had a CB1100F (Canadian version which was a little different than the US) and you're right. This does look similar. For a motor this big it should have more HP than a '83 1100F though so it seem under-powered and wow is it expensive. No doubt it would be a great bike but for the price and power I'd probably be more tempted into a FJR1300 or 1400 Concours.

    • @BikesILike
      @BikesILike  5 лет назад +3

      I think you might be missing the point of this motorcycle Michael. If you're looking for examples of Honda technical innovation, you should be comparing an old Fireblade to today's model (900cc with 110HP - now 1000cc with 189HP). The CB1300 is not that type of motorcycle. It's for people seeking the complete nostalgic experience. I'd very much still enjoy owning and riding this motorcycle.

    • @michaelwinter3132
      @michaelwinter3132 5 лет назад +1

      Since I have ridden that generation of bikes back in the days, I remember very well. Part of the experience was the fact that they were the meanest and fastest misfits on the streets. The bikes were roaring and tried to kill us in every curve, right? I don't see that wild attitude here.I like the lines and the technical perfection of this one, but I'd rather have a tricked out '83.

    Here in the UK I had the CB1300SA7. Red and white with a red frame, reminiscent of the 1980s CB1100R production racer from the early eighties. Lovely looking machine.
    I absolutely loved that bike. Comfortable, roomy and a tremendous engine. Honda quality in every aspect, a real pleasure to own. Physically big, the seat height is relatively high suiting the taller rider, unfortunately for me.
    The SA7 model is now a sought-after classic and fetch high prices. I went to a bike shop here in Norfolk last year that had one in, just to look at one for old-time’s sake. When I got there, a guy was in the process of buying it and according to the shop owner, two more potential customers were after it too.
    I would love to see these bikes for sale outside the Japanese market again. Would I buy one? No, in truth. They would cost £13,000 in the UK if not more. Would I buy one if they did another SA7 red frame CB1100R replica? Oh yes.

    Bikes should have at least as much HP as NM. Ideally, the same KW as NM.
    100nm is roughly 73 lb-ft. At 100hp, that's no bad for a low end biased or low strung bike.
    100kw is roughly 134hp. Still great and not over-stressed for a 73 ft-lbs engine. Probably still a great powerband and low end, too. Imo, bikes that do this are ideal to me, no need to go higher like 600cc race replicas which are approaching a 3x power to torque ratio nowadays.
    Unfortunately, as some have asked for, doing the nm to kw equivalency to the cb1300 WOULD put it around 158HP. Hence why I don't think it either needs to follow the golden rule, OR needs that much displacement and torque. The silver rule (nm to hp) is fine for retro type bikes and actually ideal for beginner bikes.
    And, just for more exposition, in the car world the rules shift down one notch. Golden is nm to hp, and silver is lb-ft and hp being equal.

      Aside from engine smoothness, unique exhaust note and visual impact, there's little benefit to justify the extra weight, complexity (cost) and handling deficit an in-line six-cylinder engine has when compared to an inline or V-four engine. That's why current nostalgia motorcycles are based on existing models, they're far superior to old, discontinued designs.

      Not sure what you mean by that, exactly.
      I used to own a Kawasaki KZ1300. It came out in 1979 and was a water-cooled, shaft-drive touring bike. It was undersquare, with two valves -- so with water-cooling it was actually quite narrow.
      But I am telling you -- the smoothness of that engine was worth a billion dollars. It was like a turbine: absolutely smooth. It was a whole different WORLD of internal combustion propulsion. There is NO four-cylinder engine that can duplicate that inline-six smoothness.
      And I'm a big fan of Honda's V-4's, so don't think I'm some kind of 4-cylinder hater. Short of a new Six, my dream bike would be a VFR1400 -- a new version of Honda's VFR1000 Interceptor from 1984. What a great bike.
      Don't be mistaken, though. A carefully designed Six can be very narrow AND light. As a matter of fact, Honda's new 2019 Leadwing weighs 100 pounds less than the previous generation of Leadwing. And it's had a horizontally-opposed six-cylinder for 30-some years.
      Six-cylinder engines ARE worth it.

    • @USARAY1947
      @USARAY1947 5 лет назад

      @@jeffsmith4801 I was selling those Kawasaki sixes back in the day. Yes they were smooth and one surprised me with a second gear wheelie. However, they were terribly heavy for the time. Remember, this conversation started about the CBX, not the Goldwing. It's apples to oranges. Any inline six is going to be wider than a inline or V four so will be at a disadvantage handling-wise. Of course, handling is secondary to smoothness in a touring bike, which the CBX was not.

    It's too bad Honda doesn't bring a bike like this to the US, especially in this retro era. Some of us more seasoned folks don't care for the current angular cuts so many manufacturers are inflicting upon their bikes nowadays & the more more familiar form of the UJM rings truer to function meeting form. And while power output from the 1300cc seems adequate, I'd have to ask why so low in HP/torque. Conversely, why is the price so high, especially on the Bols D'or model? As much I'd love to have this bike, that price would dissuade me from purchasing.

The other big issue was that the tail piece negated the fitting of hard paniers.

    I'm going to try to be polite here... (Disclaimer: Just my opinion. Seriously not trying to hurt feelings here. I'm just frustrated with the state of motorcycling in general.)
    This is foookin stooopid. Over weight (600lb. HOW?!?!), under powered (109hp?!?! I doubt that is even rwhp), over priced (starting at $13.5K is absurd...), unbelievable...
    Why do we keep settling for this for this?
    For reference, I really like this kind of bike. I bought the 1994 CB1000, without seeing it in person, as my first liter bike. I loved it until I just couldn't ignore a few really head scratching flaws that it had, 5-speed trans, less than 100hp, it was heavy, getting affordable replacement proper sized tires for the 18" rims was a big problem. This is especially hard to explain some of the issues when the same year CBR1000, which shared most of the engine with the CB1000, did have the 6-speed and way more power.
    Do I need to say it? A 1300cc inline 4 should be making over 160hp, easily... Suzuki B-King or Hayabusa anyone?
    To be fair Honda isn't the only motorcycle manufacturer out there being foookin stooopid. I'm looking at you Yamaha, that Niken thing wtf is that about and there's two versions of it... whaaa? There are many others that I can point to as well, some are even worse... I don't even know what to say about BMW, I mean really...

      P. T. Anderson , Here in the States millenials aren't buying motorcycles. They rent electric bikes and scooters and throw them into the river because they're too lazy to return them. They're not hunting, fishing, boating, going to baseball games, NASCAR, or pretty much anything us Boomers enjoyed.
      Honda is trying to rejuvenate the old "you meet the nicest people on a Honda" vibe from 50 years ago.

    • @p.t.anderson1593
      @p.t.anderson1593 5 лет назад

      @@spaceflight1019 Yup, I'm here in the United States. A lot of my complaints about this bike also apply to way too many bikes sold here. Which might explain why millennials and other generations aren't buying bikes like they used to. The motorcycle industry has gone stagnant in many aspects except price, which is way too high for what we're being offered. Where are the 8-speed transmissions? Why are we still getting bikes with badly flawed EFI? Where are the carbon fiber frames (there should be at least a few)? I could go on and on and on... Case in point. I have a 2001 Yamaha FZ1. Someone I know has a 2016 Yamaha FZ10. Mine makes 125ish-rwhp and gets about 42mpg. Both bikes make almost exactly the same torque. His bike makes 130ish-rwhp and gets about 30mpg. When ridden together he's looking for gas at around 100 miles. When he's looking for the second tank of gas I'll fill up because it's convenient. If I'm on my own I usually start looking for gas around 225 miles. The FZ1 is running good ol' CV carbs that are super smooth from idle to redline. The FZ10 got fancy three mode EFI that's not as smooth and gets 12mpg less... WT*?!?! This is not what I would call progress. There is 15 years between these bikes...
      (On a complete side note... I'm of the opinion that not nearly enough "Boomers" made the effort to pass on their love of hunting, fishing, boating, etc., etc., to their children in such a way that they would love it too. Then, when the second chance came around with their grandchildren/ millennials, the same thing happened... So, not just my experience either but I lived it and I'm observing/ hearing those that are younger than I. Sorry, just the way I see it. To be fair none of my grandparents, who would have been the parents of the boomer generation, taught me any of that good stuff either.)
