Attended a show at Skyline Comedy club in Appleton, WI roughly 04 05 maybe 06 (lol.. memory loss from living to the fullest.) where Doug was doing his thing. Well the no smoking ban in WI had just gone into effect. Well in his contract apparently he could smoke and long story shorter he invited the crowd to come on stage and smoke. Cool memory.
Stanhope and Carlin always were the very few that could cough up some ugliness and spit some sense on an American lost soul!! Bless them for being real in a comedy fashion with a message!!
One of his best performances, maybe the best. The guitar adds a little melancholy that fits with Doug's material. It is a bit sad, bitter, but there is life in it still. I listen to this out of nostalgia in 2021 and remember when I used to love his cynicism. Then I stopped following him because the cynicism felt immature and too negative to me and now after a very hard year, yeah, Doug's bitterness soothes me again. Sad probably, but it is good he is out there even though I find his new material not on the level of his old stuff. Hopefully he will knock it out of the park at least once again.
The fact that Stanhope isn't selling as many tickets as that guy with all the puppets - that's a clear representation of why our country has been, is, and will continue to be doomed.
