funny enough i have this video in my list, with the clip from pirates of the caribbean "they're more like guidelines" snippet 😆 ( as someone who has edited A LOT of podcast material that -6LUFS comment made me chuckle )
(I’ll try not to write a novella this go-around 😉) BEFORE Being creative is finding the effective balance between limits and freedom. Too many rules can be stifling. Too much freedom can be daunting. The trick is that after going inside the lines so to speak, you can then know what lines to draw for yourself and - if need be - how to break them. At the same time, it’s more important to have a vision rather than just follow rules. That more than anything will give you an idea of where you are and where you would like to be. Thus, the vision will more often than not determine what “rules” you will follow … and perhaps not follow. At any rate, that’s good enough for now because I made a promise 😁 AFTER Yup, agreed with what was said =] And yes, actions do indeed have consequences as per your mic “a-boos” example. Awareness should go a long way. Well, that was fun. Who’s for Chinese? =]
I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be taken literally. It means that while there are sets of practices that are generally adhered to because of times tested results, it's ok to occasionally employ practices that don't strictly conform as long as you get good results. Otherwise people would try to record kick drums with cumquats instead of mics and onto rutabagas instead of tape or hard drives. And in that sense, there *are* no rules, except the one: if it sounds good, it is.
If you want to make money, have happy clients that come back, have your tracks played on radio, etc... there are definitely rules. Then again it's ok to break one or two rules, for artistic purpises for example, but if you break *all* the rules you'll end up with a big pile of crap that'll get rejected. If making money is not the goal then go ahead do whatever you want.
Midi has shown me that all brief sounds are "drums" if put to rhythm. We keep using hi hats for hats, snare for snare, etc. We're accustomed to these tones, but only because we heard it that way already alot. Replace each sample with the wrong type of sound altogether and you'll see that you've been samples allll wrong. New grooves await in your old sample library
There are plenty of rules but there are no laws. Laws have to be followed rules don't. They're just guidelines with no real consequences, best practices at best.
Saying there are no rules is like saying there is nothing you shouldn't do. When you put this bent on it then clearly, that's nonsensical. Is it semantics? I don't think so. There are certainly things you should not do. Call them rules if you wish. How about okay, no rules then but for gawd's sake, at least apply common sense? 😀

I’ll be right back, I just have to go remix my snare drum…

Volume 4 board goes so hard

Commenting for the algorithm. Great channel.
There is at least one rule: If it sounds good, go for it!
Great topic and commentary. I'm curious about your thoughts on gain staging. Rule or no rule? I see that many pros don't gain stage.
Definitely a vague and trendy comment!
I agree

Only if you understand the rules you can mix without rules haha , this is a very high level of engineering in my opinion
You can’t learn something you think you already know everything about
