Exodus 32 - An Idolatrous People and a Merciful God

After 7 chapters hearing about how God wants to call us back into His presence to rest in Him, we come to the infamous chapter 32 of Exodus where we stand face to face with the reality that, left to ourselves, we do not want to rest in God but desire to craft idols of our own to worship. How can the good news of God's desires overcome the bad news of our own?
