  • How to build: USB3.0 external case for a 5.25" BLURAY drive - for less than 25$
    coreWeaver / ioCONNECTED
    Hey guys Core Weaver here..
in this video, not exactly a hardware design but a very useful tool and if it helps somebody out there I would be pleased to hear.
We're building an external case for a Blu-ray recorder which sits in my older desktop computer. It's a 5.25" drive, I didn't use it much and since I don't have a portable Blu-ray recorder and my laptop doesn't have one either I decided to pull the drive out of that unused computer and give it a new life.
I do all my back ups on Blu-rays so this is gonna be very useful, and because buying is over-rated I will build the external case my self.
I also made an Instructable about this project, and I posted all the steps, the needed files and list of materials, dimensions. I think it's everything you'll need to be able to build one. It only costed 23$ in materials out of which the most expensive part was the SATA converter.
    Thanks for watching !
As always, stay cool and make something great !

This is an open source project. You may use, modify and distribute everything as long as you give credit.
All the project's files are available here: www.instructab...
The SATA to USB3.0 converter I used:
    www.amazon.de/...
I'm not sponsored by the seller nor Amazon.

I used MDF coated on one side 3mmm thick but you can use any type of material you're comfortable with. All that matters is the thickness (3mm) if you don't want to recalculate all the dimensions.
L shaped aluminum profiles 2 types:
    15mm x 15mm (x 1mm thickness) and 40mm x 15mm (x 1.5mm thickness).
    Metal plate (1.5mm thickness).
4 x M3 / machine screws / Pan Head / 19mm Long. You may have to adjust their length.
Glue. I used two types. Fast and slow acting.
and of course the optical drive, I am assuming you already have.
The total cost for this project excluding the optical drive: 23$

    Love this man!!
Nothing like a hard copy to archive for yourself other than a clould service! The majority of this newer generation will laugh regarding this 'Back-Up' meathod.

Some of the different things I like to get involved in are, computers, 3D printing, and woodworking. I think I am going to give this a try, about the only thing I do not have, is the aluminum L extrusions that you used here, but I "might" be able to work around not having that. I'm thinking I could build the entire enclosure using some 1/4 inch (apx. 6mm)thick acrylic. Great design!!!!!!!!!!!

An absolute gem of an article, it also solved a similar issue I had with the need to retain a Bluray combo unit in upgrading to a modern desktop case that had no 5.25" bays. FUBAR! My need for multiple removable HDD's - I work with video and previously used an Icy Dock Caddy system - was economically solved with external 3.5" and 2.5" drive cases . . but an external case for an optical drive? GB£56 up to GB£93?!?!?
Your DIY case is really rather pro finish but it's your mention of the UNITEK that has solved my problem because I didn't know this type of adapter was available and it will allow me to gut the circuit board out of the rear of an old alloy case for an EIDE drive and use that case! Perfect, the UNITEK has cost me GB£20, and I've "up-cycled" an old PC component too! Huge thanks!

yes you might just do that. but why would you keep your drill bits or any other tools in some nice enclosure and not spread all over the place. 'just sayin

It looks gorgeous. I'm gonna build one too. I have several drives in older computers which I don't use anymore. Exactly the same scenario. I also found your tutorial on Instructables. Thanks a lot for sharing your plans

Love this. Beautiful case, but I don't have 3d printer so the spacers will take some further adaptation.

anything you build with passion looks great. it holds a special value, one you cannot pay for .. with money

Very cool and clean looking build! I'm in a similar situation, I have a small external DVD burner, which is very flimsy and not really reliable. External enclosures for 5,25" drives on Amazon are really overpriced and badly build. Just as I had the idea to just use SATA to USB converter and build an enclosure myself I found your video tutorial!

Unfortunately Unitek Y-1039 doesn't work in my case. But thats weird, because I wanted to use with my blu ray drive and it is the same as yours.
edit. I bought Ugreen 20611 and it works fine with my blu ray drive.

is it necessary to build an enclosure for the player, for safety or anything?

    • @ryanajames3719
      @ryanajames3719 Год назад +1

It looks much cooler and it increases the safety. I'm still building mine and I decided to add a small layer of shock absorbing material between the case and the drive.
