  • After a bit of trial and error I opted to start cutting the cells in half on old comb frames before notching. And, the results are much better

When I learned beekeeping as a youth back in the '60s, the leader of our 4-H beekeeping club showed us how to notch for the purpose of rearing queens in old comb. (Yes, notching was around loonnng before Mel Disselkoen introduced the technique.) However, our 4-H leader taught to use the corner of the hive tool instead of the entire end of the blade. Using a corner of the hive tool enables notching without the problem of crushing the cell wall. And, the beekeeper can be much more selective in telling the bees which larvae to use for raising new queens.
