You should of rinsed the outside of the AC with water with a water hose. At least that’s why my AC guy told me.

    • @trinidaddave4691

Well, having been in the AC business for 40 years, I’d say you did good for a novice.
But, like others had mentioned, condenser cleaners will come either acidic or caustic. It’s best to rinse the condenser with water to avoid any corrosion.
Evaporator cleaners are self rinsing since the evaporator by default collects water on the coil evaporated from the air in the RV.
      But, good job overall!

I am not a HVAC tech but I do clean my A/C. I shut off the power, use compressed air to blow out the loose stuff then I cover any electrical with plastic. I take a garden hose and rinse. Not High tech but it has worked for me for forty years on the various rigs I have had. Cheap and easy.

As an HVAC tech, for the condenser (outside coil) next time spray the foaming no rinse cleaner close to the coil, left to right and let the foam foam up in-between the fins and the tubes. Let it sit til it stops foaming and starts running the coil. Then rinse the condenser coil out with water and watch the dirt roll out. Just don't get the motor in-between the indoor and outdoor coils wet to be safe.
The evaporator no raise coil cleaner uses the condensate to raise out the coil. You can use an evaporator cleaner on the condenser coil but need to rinse with water.
For the fin combs do not use those. They weaken the fins. Only if they are really bent over from a hail storm or something. I use a small flat head screwdriver and work the fins straight.
Love your videos I wish I had a mobile job to get out and live wherever.

Just to reiterate. Wash the condenser coil. If the cleaner in left on if can damage your coil over time. Simple green is a great all around clean from laundry, drive ways and a/c coils (evaporator and condenser). Be aware at the bottom of your evaporator coil is a drip pan for the water to drip into.vacuum that out carefully, the best you can both sides if possible. Side note, leaving your a/c on is not bad but when when the fan shuts down the coil lets out some excess water and if left on can also put moisture back into the space if a/c is set to cold. It normally not a big deal but in small spaces you can definitely tell. I’m a retired a/c tech rv full time with my wife a travel ED nurse.

Air conditioning in nurse terms; The compressor (heart) pumps the refrigerant (blood) through condenser (lung) where the heat (carbon dioxide) is expelled and the cool (oxygen) is introduced to the refrigerant that passes through the evaporator (muscles) where the cool is exchanged for heat...

I have been semi-binging, watching your some of your videos (about 12) for the past 3 or 4 hours. I have enjoyed them and sometimes shake my head and laugh at some of the repartee, experiences and foibles. One the comments one of you made in a recent posting caught my attention regarding loneliness on the road and sadness when you had to part with friends. Someone responded; "I am sad, but I know we will meet again a few months down the road". My antenna went up when I heard that. You are young, healthy, strong and filled with vitality but do not take the future for granted. Make all your moments count as much as is possible. My wife and I sold everything and went fulltime in 2000 for nearly nine years and from 2009 till now we have at least spent half of every year travelling in our RV. We have reached the point, because of age and health (77 & 86) where we know when we part with friends, the odds are getting very high that we won't see them again in this life. We have also experienced the untimely loss of a few very close friends, throughout our whole life, that we had great ideas / plans about our future adventures together that never would be. Cherish your time with your friends and families. I am going to try to copy my long write up of our RV adventure so you can get a glimpse of a couple of “old timers” experiences.
AN RV LIFETIME ADVENTURE (NOT QUITE FINISHED) SAME 36 FT CLASS A MOTORHOME V1O FORD - 22 YEARS 8 ½ YEARS FULLTIME - 13 ½ YEARS HALFTIME 153000+ MOTORHOME MILES 250000+ DRIVEN / SIGHTSEEING MILES ON 3 TOWED VEHICLES (JEEPS) ALL 49 STATES (MOST SEVERAL TIMES) - ALL CANADIAN PROVINCES (MANY SEVERAL TIMES) PLUS NEWFOUNDLAND
FORWARD HI! My name is Phil (Philip) and my wife’s name is Bev (Beverly). We have been married 54 years, have 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. We spent our working career (beginning in 1962) entirely in the Sacramento, California. Beverly retired from the Department of Defense in 1986 and I retired from private industry on 31 December 1999. The following pages contain the relatively condensed version of our story on how we accomplished our long held dream of being footloose and fancy free and to wander through the USA and Canada and to visit our many friends and relatives throughout this great land. I was born and raised in Old Town, Maine. Beverly was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. We both believe we have been very blessed and also lucky in our life’s adventure. My belief that we were very blessed does not mean that some luck was not involved. Seeking Divine guidance in our life does not preclude that natural events (both good and bad) won’t play a part in our lives. We are humans and live in a natural world (that was Divinely Created) but is controlled by natural laws (step into the path of speeding truck and you are going to get injured or killed or be in the wrong place at the wrong time, possibly the same result). Well, enough philosophy. My objective for this book is to inform, instruct, entertain and inspire you as you begin or continue your own great adventure. May you be blessed and “lucky” during your own great adventure.
WHAT WE DID AND HOW WE DID IT Our adventure began many years before we retired. In our early life we did some tent camping. That didn’t last too long before we decided there had to be a better way. We graduated to a large Starcraft pop-up tent camper which served our family very well for several years. Once the kids got into their mid / late teens and didn’t camp with us most of the time we disposed of the tent camper and bought a 10 ½ foot Lance cabover pickup camper which then allowed us to tow our boat. That worked very well for about 8 years. In 1992 we (Beverly and I) took an extended five week / 5000 mile trip through the Northwest USA, into Western Canada and then down the entire West coast as far as Point Reyes National Seashore in California. We pulled a large utility trailer which carried our 18 foot Old Town canoe, a 250cc four stroke Honda, dual purpose motorcycle, a relatively large barbecue grill and miscellaneous camping gear. It turned out to be a marvelous trip. The camper was self contained and had a SMALL wet bath. We found we could stop pretty much anywhere we wanted, at least for a couple of days. Of the 5 weeks, we stayed about half the time in established campgrounds and the other half of the time stopping and staying at some of the most beautiful and serene places imaginable. The trip was essentially trouble free (blessed & lucky) this was about 1991. After this trip and over the next 3 or 4 years is when we began to consider and made the decision to go full time in an RV upon retirement.
THE PLANNING AND HUNT FOR A FULL TIME RV About 1995 /1996 we got serious about finding a rig that would meet our requirements. We pretty much ruled out “tag alongs” or fifth wheels (there were not very many suitable toy haulers at that time). Over the course of three years (1996 to 1999) We frequented RV dealers, RV shows, some motorhome manufactures on the West coast ( Fleetwood, National RV, Rexhall, Monaco and Country Coach (test drove many, many class a motorhomes - most brands - 32 feet to 40 feet) both gas and diesel pushers (remember, there was not the variety or selection that has existed the past several years in terms of slide outs, interior designs, fully painted exteriors, engine choices etc.). We had decided (after several of these excursions) that we wanted a class A motorhome for a few primary reasons. First, it was because of the spectacular view / visibility out that front window; second, we could stop virtually anywhere to eat, rest, nap, use bathroom without ever getting out of the RV; third, we wanted to tow a 4 wheel drive vehicle so we could sightsee the backroads / trails in all our travels; last, we wanted to have enough room and at least 3000 pounds of weight carrying capacity for all our stuff. For the first couple years of searching it appeared that we would need a diesel pusher to meet our requirements. However in late 1998 / early 1999 (may not be exactly right) Ford Motor Company introduced a larger RV chassis with the V10 engine. I believe they had an 18000# and a 22000# chassis and for a very short time built an 18000# chassis with a tag axle with a total GVWR of 22500# (7000# front, 11000# rear duals, 4500# tag). All the chassis came with 19.5 inch wheels / tires. The net of it all was that we found OUR motorhome. It was manufactured by National RV in Perris, California in May / June 1999, we took delivery in July 1999. We thought we were ordering a 1999 model year and ended up getting a 2000 model year with a totally different exterior graphics design / color which we greatly preferred over the 1999 colors and design (lucky once again). The model was the 6351 Tropical with the tag axle setup. It was slightly over 36 feet long, had one long living room slide, large walk thru bath with two pocket doors and tons of storage (drawers and hanging closets, a north / south full queen size bed and a very good size shower). By the time we took delivery we had sold our home and did a one year lease on a home in the same area (which gave us until April of 2000 to dispose of a lot of our “stuff” and to make provisions to store what we wanted to keep). We rented a 10’ X 20’ storage bin for approximately $130.00 a month. We paid rental on that storage unit for 8 ½ years. We put all we wanted to keep, but did not want to take with us, into the storage unit and the rest we loaded into the motorhome. We moved out of our rental unit and began our full time travel on 4/18/2000. When we took delivery of the motorhome in July of 1999 it was stored at a 24 hour access storage lot nearby. There was no room to keep it at the rental unit. From the time we took delivery (July 1999 to 18 April 2000 we had taken 14 trips and put about 4500 miles on the odometer - it had about 320 miles registered at delivery).

Just an FYI - use the brush to light clean the fins, mostly to loosen dirt. Then spray the cleaner on, let it sit and finally rinse with a spray bottle or spray hose until clean. Go slow and no water will be a problem. You also avoid having to straighten fins, of which each one which is damaged reduces efficiency. Keep cleaning with the cleaner two during the summer, once in the fall and spring and all the residue will be cleaned out. Just my two cents.

When my wife and I retire into an RV, we don't plan on traveling east of Kansas or west of the Rockies. We may, once or twice, go to Michigan to visit my mother, or, if it's winter, Florida, but only briefly. Other than that we plan to stay pretty much in a narrow band of geography. That's where our children and grandchildren live. That way we avoid the high humidity of the east. I've been there. I remember feeling wet all the time. All. The. Time. I hated it then, I'll probably hate it even more now that I am elderly. Still, good video! I will be saving a link to it to remind me to clean out my AC units.

The presenter at 1 of the seminars (Steven Raye) who is RVTI master certified, recommended a product called 3X:Chemistry Coil Cleaner. You don't need to scrub or rinse it off. He also recommended Micro Air instead of Softstart because it's UL approved and made in the US.

There should be a water drain in the evaporator coil chamber. Make sure it's not clogged. If the water is not allowed to drain it will freeze on the evaporator coil and build up further until it spits ice. The moisture in the air condenses and freezes. Then the unit cycles, melts and suppose to drain. Think of your A/C as a refrigerator freezer without a door.

We have extra filters left over from a failed AC unit from a friends houseboat. We keep one clean set in the cabinet at all times and every couple of weeks of run time, we just swap out and clean the other set thoroughly without being in a rush. When they dry, back in the cabinet they go.

  • @carlbeaver7112
    @carlbeaver7112 2 года назад +3

Uh, the evaporator freezing up indicates that the refrigeration portion is fine (meaning the condenser is NOT the problem.) Raking the fins can be counter-productive on older units as the fins weaken with age. What is happening is either a) the airflow across the evaporator is insufficient (plugged filter, collapsed or restricted airflow caused by ducting/devices) and/or b) the refrigerant throttling device isn't working properly. If it uses a TXV valve it isn't closing properly. If it uses an orifice tube the temp sensor isn't doing its job.

Cleaning out your ac coils and condenser can be done gently with compressed air or flushed out with water, however if you use a blow gun nozel you can blow it out in seconds and save money on cleaners and save time in the long run, plus you can save yourself cuts and scrapes. Remember to blow debris out from the inside out, so you're blowing the debris out the way it entered your unit, just a thought and tip. My wife and I love you guys.

Hey Kyle and Renae! One thing I've learned from Josh the RV Nerd, is that if you leave your A/C in dump mode too long, the cold air is getting sucked back up into the system. He suggested that you leave it in central mode. I think that would keep it from freezing up. I may not be correct, but I'm just reiterating what he says. Go check out his videos. He knows what he's talking about. Take care and see you on the road. Peace!!!

I AM a hvacr technician. It's Lemmon sent because it's designed for the evaporator coil. It's a "no rinse" product. The condenser coil can be cleaned with a more aggressive cleaning solution and rinsed with warer. I just used tri power hd on our 2015 Evergreen. All that said.
There are two things that will cause freeze ups. Lack of air flow ( dirty filter. Blower motor not working or running slow) or low on refrigerant charge.

Iced up coils usually boils down to 3 things:
    Dirty Coils
    Dirty Filter
    Low Refrigerant
I live in SE Florida and use my thermostat like an on/off switch. I run it all night then turn it off for most of the day. The place slowly heats up but it's a slow enough process that I don't really notice it getting warmer. I turn it back on when my wife gets home from work.

A cost effective cleaning solution is to use a 50/50 mix of simple green and water in a spray bottle. Loosen the dirt on the coils first then spray (lightly) both the condenser and evaporator coils. The simple clean will clean out any mildew and mold that may build up in the fins. Then take another spray bottle of clean water and rinse out the simple green cleaner and dirt out of each coil. Use a soft brush to scrub out the buildup on each coil. Also, ensure the drains in the bottom of the coil trays are clear so moisture will not build up during a/c operation. Add this procedure to your yearly maintenance jobs and your a/c’s will love you by giving you many years of problem free usage!
Kyle, you are so lucky that your wife is willing to get her hands dirty with you while doing RV maintenance! She seems to enjoy doing the not so fun tasks of RVing so encourage her and thank her for her help! Take care you two and enjoy sharing the work of maintaining your RV.

It has been my experience that the most common reasons for ice are: 1 short cycling (pulling cooled air back into the return air either via the dump or the internal seperator of the exhaust and return air not properly sealed) 2 the thermal probe in the coils has come out or it's wire has been compromised.
#1 shouldn't be your issue as you have the RV air flo system (I may be off on the name)
    # 2 may be your issue, I would check it when you clean the coils.
PS: My wife and I really enjoyed your videos

One thing that I did to get my coils straight again when they are pinching together is take a flat head screwdriver 🪛 the kind that you would use to tighten the screws on glasses 👓 and your able open those fins back up then you can use the fin tool to make them more straight 👍

I brush the carpets and then vacuum them to remove the cat hair. Then I use sticky tape to pull up cat hair from the furniture! There’s always something to do, that’s for sure! 😊 💜.

If it’s freezing up inside the exterior coils are usually fine. It’s the interior coils that collect dirt>slow the airflow>slower airflow on interior coils prevents the interior air from transferring heat to the coils>interior coils remain too cold and freeze condensation then dump ice on your bed.

As a hvac tech, you don't want the A/C to run all night it will ice up on you. Let it get satisfied and also make sure the drain line is draining properly, and as for the condneser coil cleaner you want the foam to enter inside the fins to push out the dirt and then spray the coil down with water and you will have much better results. Love the videos you guys are great.

I really don't like those plastic scrubbers that come on top of the spray cans. I think in the future I would use a regular one or two inch paint brush. It's softer and will get in between the fins deeper.
Hey!!!!! I'm getting a Golden Retriever puppy. Today I will visit him for the first time. I'm going to give him another 2 weeks with his mother. I'm trying to think of a name for him. What do you think about "Carldexnae"? Just kidding. I think I may go with Cosmo. I want to keep the name in the Marvel family and not because that was the dog's name on Fuller House. Until I actually pick him up I won't pick an official name. Names in the running are Thor, Cosmo, Xavier, Gambit, Khan, Loki, Maverick, or Romulus.

Found our RV air system would coil freeze over faster in some travel locations than others. {Did not do any research - Humidity - Elevation - did not check it out, just turned it off when no air was passing through the coil}. The unit then was about a year old. Funny how the evaporators have a thermal probe stuck between a couple fins, but do not seem to sense the freezing over of the coil and then turn off compressor. Frustrating roof air systems. I so relate to your concerns… Thanks again.

Garden hose with lots of water is your best cleaner when cleaning condenser coils. If these products aren’t rinsed off well it can eat your coils up and cause leaks. Most of these coil cleaners are acidic and eat the grime off.

The only suggestion I have on a otherwise perfect video, is when you use the cleaners, stop spritzing! Hold the button down and cover it thoroughly and thickly and then let it sit and do its job. Then you can come through and brush it off and see if you need to do it again. This little spritzing thing doesn’t do anything and you don’t get an even coat.

  • @Ant-fq3yi

Careful with using cleaner on your ac fins make sure you rinse well some have acid and can eat up the fins. The nucalgon evap cleaner is the best stuff in the world no rinse. for condensers I just use water its always just dirt and polen buy a bullseye water nozzle and it will push the water all the way through the coil and not dmg fins as long as you go straight on. They are low pressure high flow but if you feel better with coil cleaner nucalgon all the way they have been doing it for years. Also everything that isnt wrapped up can be wet the condenser coils compressor fan all that gets rained on just kill the power so an exposed wire dosnt kill you. AC’s create ice for a few reasons usually its a restriction either on condenser flow or evap flow. The other reason is refrigerant leak low on charge.
