    Lander, about 1985: My best friend had purchased an IH Scout (maybe a '66 0r 67?) in decent shape, and he couldn't wait to take it out hunting up in the Winds. Well, long story short, we were coming back after an unsuccessful hunt, we were WAY back in the boonies, and it just sputtered to a stop! I finally diagnosed the problem: the carburetor mounting bolts had loosened up so much there was no vacuum to pull fuel into the engine. This is one of the many times I was thankful I had brought my Swiss army knife. I used the can opener tool to tighten the nuts on the carb as far as I could, then we got back to Lander relatively unscathed! Later, that IH took us to places one could only dream of in a regular 4x4 pickup! Love 'em!

    I did a '67 Scout with 304, 4 speed trans and twin stick transfer. Full frame up build. Swapped over to Dana 44 axles. Did 100% of the work myself. I took pictures along the way during the entire build. I'd like to share it with you...

    More power means more stress on the rest of the drive train. Drives me nuts when folks want to add power to an old scout.

    My uncle had a grey '64 Scout just like that, same engine but no interior bulkhead. It rusted so bad the rear panels were gone three times as far as this or more behind the doors. He had a six foot Myers plow on it with a lift only Electro-lift. That Scout could plow snow but the clutch always chattered.He wanted to give it to me but it was too far gone. That would be about 1982 or 3 if I recall. I think he got $400 for it on a trade in on a full size Jeep 2 door Cherokee. It still ran and was on the road but the rust was really bad.

    Nice, I’m a few days late watching this. I don’t think I have ever seen a scout up close. I would love about a 1950s IH pickup truck in Farmall Red!

    My dad had a 1968 international 1200 4x4 when I was a kid. It was a 266 v8 with a manual. The thing that I always though was cool about it was it had a PTO shaft coming out the the rear by the tailgate. Dad used it like an extra tractor to run a auger to put ear corn into the corn crib.

    And what was our farm pickup for years and years? 1967 IH half ton. Green. Take it to the field, put it in bull low and then everybody is out walking along side picking rocks. No driver unless it was headed way off track. That truck just didn't get stuck and the motor just kept on running....

    I had a 1962 IH Scout it was the pickup style. I think the windows slid back and forth. didn't have cranks. It was my first 4 wheel drive. Had the 152 engine and was fun to tear around with.

    This is going to be a good project a 4bt would be neat but the weight of the diesel is a little prohibitive a abc is a easy swap if it was mine I would think about a ls swap because they’re a little lighter

    Looks like a neat project with lots of work ahead to make it what he wants. Previously had a '60 3/4 ton pickup that we did custom engine swap (still was IH), custom power brakes, custom power steering upgrade, and split rims changed to standard wheels and more capable tires. Was fun. Now we have a '72 pickup that had been converted to a flatbed. Workhorse, I'll tell you.

    Hi Blake, I've always been a fan of the old scouts. We used to have an International dealer near where I live when I was a kid (early 70's). My dad and I used to go look at the scouts.
    What part of Wyoming do you live in? My wife and I just visited Yellowstone last week. We went out on I90 thru Gillette and Buffalo, and came back on I80 thru Rock Springs and Cheyenne. Beautiful area, we love the wide open spaces.

    Big dreams... till the lack of time, expense of parts, and the realization of how laborious this project is. I've heard the same speech that the Elliot guy has made over and over. "I'm gonna put this motor in. Gotta ditch these axles. Putting on a new flux capacitor", it's all talk and I'll believe it when I see it.

    From the factory, that 4 cylinder model 80, had about 90 horsepower.
    A Detroit 3-71 would make a terrific little motor for that unit, ... without making too much power.
    A 4 cylinder Kubota diesel would also make a dependable, serviceable motor, with lots of parts availability.
    The danger in swapping for a bigger gas or diesel engine, is that you wind up tearing up the original drive-line.
    That old T-90 Spicer transmission was never intended to handle a lot of horsepower.
    And big tires and wheels will also put too much strain on the drive-line and brakes.
    This is the voice of hard won experience speaking.
    Generally speaking, Automotive Engineers tend to make better choices on these issues, than do shade-tree mechanics.

    How many project's do you have going there Blake ? I would go nuts with more than three at once ! You could always try a little harder to sway the guy to have a Cummins diesel 😁 I really hate gas engines always carb and points problems with them as you and ChuckE says designed to fail and be broken ! Well your both right !😁

    It's also true that in Wyoming when a cattle wanders onto an adjacent landowners property it is within the purvey of said adjacent landowner to harvest said cattle and cook him/her up for dinner. Which is why a big part of the reason why the concept of open range is universally accepted. It provides benefits to both parties.
    I see "barn find fix-up" videos and they just simply mystify me. Probably because I've been working on old rusty crap for years. Wanna buy a 1936 F-12? People buy this old stuff and then spend thousands of dollars and thousand of hours turning a rusty old piece of outdated technology into something that in the end is best fit to keep within a 40 acre lot.
    I have driven vehicles like this and tried to keep vehicles like this on the road and it's a waste of time and money. All the value is in the perception of it. A tell in this instance is the buyer likes it because he saw it in a movie. And to put a family in it? A top heavy narrow wheel base that will roll over in a 20MPH crosswind or when the off wheel drops into a rut going around a corner?!
    Lots of small diesels that could be put in something like this. All not easy, all expensive, and all, just plain a waste of time and money that would be better spent on his kid's education or something actually beneficial in some other way.
    Or maybe the new owner lives in Jackson Hole, in which case he has more than enough money and in the winter burns it for heat because burning wood creates air pollution.

    • @GuyinWY
      @GuyinWY  6 лет назад +4

      There are some laws related to keeping stray livestock, but I don’t know them right offhand. As for the truck, to each his own. Some people spend money on movies and restaurants, some people spend it on vehicles or tractors. You only live once, live your life the way that makes you happy.

    Over the years I have had two Scouts a 62 and a 63 and I loved them. I think your buddy is making a mistake if he puts a SBC in the Scout. He would be better off going to a V6 Chevy... The best mileage I could get out of my Scouts was 14 to 16 mpg all around.
    Putting a 4BT in it would be a wast because of the lack of room with out hacking the hell out of the Scout.

    • @timothykeith1367
      @timothykeith1367 3 года назад

      4BT is too heavy. A larger Kubota four cylinder might be okay for offroad use, but might not have enough oomph for highway use.

    • @krissfemmpaws1029
      @krissfemmpaws1029 3 года назад +1

      If it has a slant four in it thr axle ratio would be 4.27:1. As I remember the 152 ci made around 75 hp and the larger one made 85 hp at 3800 rpm i think it was. About 55 to 60 was all you wanted to push them.

    Rusty,crusty money pit. Ugh.I'm no rocket scientist but it sure looks like left side frame collapse is the cause of the drivers door dipping to the rear.This will definitely be a labor of love and not a profitable endeavor.

    Orginal parts for those old Scouts are hard to come by, I remember when IH went belly up it was a sad time for folks in my neck of the woods because a lot of folks were effected because IH was popular around here.

      Tricky Ricky Cars And Whatnot Seat belts were first installed in US passenger cars as standard equipment beginning in model year 1964. Only outboard front passengers were supplied. Beginning on Jan. 1, 1968, seat belts were required and installed in ALL vehicles except busses. Scout got factory installed standard equipment seat belts beginning in model year 1967.
