  • When a pilot makes a Mayday distress call, or there's a plane on fire on the runway, these are the airport emergency service crew who swing into action as first responders. With an airplane taking off or landing every 80 seconds at Singapore's Changi, the world's best airport, #CNAInsider gets exclusive access to an emergency simulation where these select firefighters are trained to handle the real deal.

It's hard work to be a firefighter indeed! Out of 300 hopefuls who apply to be an AES firefighter, only 20 get through its stringent selection process every year. You can read more about it here: cna.asia/2VFFtVW

I used to work as an airport firefighter in Sweden and we had 20 seconds to get in the cars. Though we had to wear our protective gear accept from jacket at all times, if it weren't 2 hours between flights. Then we were allowed to take off the rest of the gear. Also the first firetruck had to reach the plane in 70 seconds and the other ones in 90 seconds. The foam used is called light water and it release oxygen when the bubbles in the foam breaks. That makes it possible to breathe as long as you brake the foam bubbles. So if you would be unlucky to end up in a plane fire and foam is used, remember to wave your hand lightly in front of your face and you can breathe.

Hey i respect your service but i couldn't find any sources citing that light water contains oxygen. Although it definitely contains air, but also can't find anywhere that says the air can be released to help you breathe. Nevertheless, the foam is slightly toxic to humans

@@pIacehoIders Ah sorry, in my mother tongue the word for air and oxygen is the same which makes me mixing it up in English as well. So yes it contains air, but same principle stands. You need to pop the bubbles to be able to breath. Though most people would be terrified if the airplane catches on fire and they would panic. That means they will start waving around and screaming so the foam bubbles will break around them. Light water both taste and smell really bad, so it's nicer to pop the bubbles yourself than getting them into your mouth. Yes all foams are toxic but that's a risk that the industry is willing to take. It's better to survive than die.

Indeed, while there were no internal fires were lit during filming for the safety of our producers, they’re regularly done so to train the firefighters. We weren't even wearing their suits while filming but we were drenched in sweat!

Doning full protective gear is not big deal for a firefighter but the training before and after you become firefighter is big deal for example when you join as volunteer with hourly wages but you have to do same training as regular member like jogging/running 5 kilometer everyday to build your stamina

A friend of mine left SCDF to join the Airport Emergency Group as a fire fighter. While in SCDF as a fire fighter, he had all kinds of "injuries" and was even exempted from taking IPPT. Eventually he was settled into the Operations room as an operator. Life was good and easy but the pay was less complimenting. When he heard that AES pays much more, he signed up and was accepted. Suddenly, all his "injuries" miraculously disappeared. I want to thank AES for healing him of his "injuries" and making his life so much more fulfilling. Heck! he can even take IPPT now.

It's just that they have specific types of firetrucks for airports. They're called ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) trucks, and their design is for airports and planes. I can't tell you any real specifics, but there are videos that explain why they're the shape that they are.

Chances of plane fire in distress are nil... but the chances of fire in HDB heartlands and road accident are always there and happening. And these responders are the NSFs who attended to these emergenies. These NSFs are lowly paid but they serve with pride. Kudos to all NSFs firefighters and paramedics...

2:28 sorry but in my knowledge jet fuel is not very flammable, high flash point of 38C and auto ignition 210C. It only takes a flame when atomised in air. But of course huge amount of energy involved in a crash could cause ignition.

    • @tomj2064

Minhao Lee things don’t need to be very flammable to catch fire. Especially in this case where a 800000+ kg vehicle is falling out of the sky at high speeds. When the plane hits the ground, the jet fuel will vapourise causeimg it to become extremely flammable. But u r correct since normal liquid jet fuel won’t easily catch fire. And jet fuel burns hotter than normal fuel

I'm not going to argue that jet fuel is not flammable, but it is not that volatile most of the time. Jet A has a flash point of 38°C, therefore fuel temperature has to be higher for vapours to ignite. If fuel is in contact with hot engine parts I guess it could create ignitable vapours.

Why they didn't have the 8x8? AMS has the same size and types of aircrafts and they used the 8x8, RTM and LEY gets from AMS the 6x6.

ICAO requirements only define the (1) time limits and (2) FF Cap.
It's airports resp. how the arrange that.
3 6x6 have can have the same FF cap as 2 8x8, but as their operating weight is lower, the might be faster so can save a couple of secs ...
