How Changi Airport's Firefighters Deal With A Plane Emergency

- When a pilot makes a Mayday distress call, or there's a plane on fire on the runway, these are the airport emergency service crew who swing into action as first responders. With an airplane taking off or landing every 80 seconds at Singapore's Changi, the world's best airport, #CNAInsider gets exclusive access to an emergency simulation where these select firefighters are trained to handle the real deal.

Thank you firefighters for your hard work and risking your lives to save others!
It's hard work to be a firefighter indeed! Out of 300 hopefuls who apply to be an AES firefighter, only 20 get through its stringent selection process every year. You can read more about it here: cna.asia/2VFFtVW

I used to work as an airport firefighter in Sweden and we had 20 seconds to get in the cars. Though we had to wear our protective gear accept from jacket at all times, if it weren't 2 hours between flights. Then we were allowed to take off the rest of the gear. Also the first firetruck had to reach the plane in 70 seconds and the other ones in 90 seconds. The foam used is called light water and it release oxygen when the bubbles in the foam breaks. That makes it possible to breathe as long as you brake the foam bubbles. So if you would be unlucky to end up in a plane fire and foam is used, remember to wave your hand lightly in front of your face and you can breathe.
Musiknird informative.. thanks for sharing.
Hey i respect your service but i couldn't find any sources citing that light water contains oxygen. Although it definitely contains air, but also can't find anywhere that says the air can be released to help you breathe. Nevertheless, the foam is slightly toxic to humans
Ty.. for ths info
@@pIacehoIders Ah sorry, in my mother tongue the word for air and oxygen is the same which makes me mixing it up in English as well. So yes it contains air, but same principle stands. You need to pop the bubbles to be able to breath. Though most people would be terrified if the airplane catches on fire and they would panic. That means they will start waving around and screaming so the foam bubbles will break around them. Light water both taste and smell really bad, so it's nicer to pop the bubbles yourself than getting them into your mouth. Yes all foams are toxic but that's a risk that the industry is willing to take. It's better to survive than die.
Tack!!
Doning the full protective gear is bloody hot and not just anyone can tolerate the heat, besides the weight. Salute. Thank you, team.
Indeed, while there were no internal fires were lit during filming for the safety of our producers, they’re regularly done so to train the firefighters. We weren't even wearing their suits while filming but we were drenched in sweat!
Doning full protective gear is not big deal for a firefighter but the training before and after you become firefighter is big deal for example when you join as volunteer with hourly wages but you have to do same training as regular member like jogging/running 5 kilometer everyday to build your stamina
Yes during my NS life, the suit that killed me haha... It will take away 20 to 30% of your energy haha, especially when you are climbing 7 to 8 storey by foot
A friend of mine left SCDF to join the Airport Emergency Group as a fire fighter. While in SCDF as a fire fighter, he had all kinds of "injuries" and was even exempted from taking IPPT. Eventually he was settled into the Operations room as an operator. Life was good and easy but the pay was less complimenting. When he heard that AES pays much more, he signed up and was accepted. Suddenly, all his "injuries" miraculously disappeared. I want to thank AES for healing him of his "injuries" and making his life so much more fulfilling. Heck! he can even take IPPT now.
In my opinion, all of the firefighters which are all over the world should be deserved to all people’s respect and also receive higher values by all civilians. I really have respect for you all fighters and hope them to get their work done well without any precariousness.
Aes vehicles and stn is one of the best. Unfortunately they can't go out of airport boundary.
Thanks for accommodating some Stn 22 firefighters in 2008 lalang fire along aviation drive.
here they respond to emergency outside of the airports as well ... let it be an extreme scenario like an emergency landing in the fields, an airplane crashing, or sth rather simple like forest fires or truck fires
@@EnjoyFirefighting Or big chemical fires like Chemiepak
With all due respect.. no hard feelings. These guys are well paid. Chances of plane fire in distress are nil... but the chances of fire in HDB heartlands and road accident are always there and happening. And these responders are the NSFs who attended to these emergenies. These NSFs are lowly paid but they serve with pride. Kudos to all NSFs firefighters and paramedics...
Good job guys! Did a fantastic job on SQ Munich flight that was on fire. Professionalism.
Respect
We completely agree, even something that seems basic, like rolling out a hose, takes a month to master! It also weighs up to 17kg.
0:02 the best place to rest at work
I hope we feature the AES along with Stryker/Sentinel Prime in NDP 2020
Great Response! I used to join the Airport Fire Officer Course at SAA as well. Really miss all my brothers over there :)
Thank you guys for everything you do! The response time is mad!!
The response time is correct and extremely well drilled.
Sadly there are some countries whose response is significantly slower.
Fire fighters always on time because I worked as security one of the condo false alarm they came in 3mins hats off to them 👍
Ahhh... A nice austrian Rosenbauer Panther
it's not German but Austrian

THE FIRETRUCKS R SO COOL
i was Frm.Ex SCDF fireman In stn 43 rota 2 yr 2004 to 2006..used to go for the interview n pass the aptitude test..but disappointed nvr get into the AES just bcoz of my IPPT Results..that was yrs ago...in 2009 and 2010...

Awesome. Our unsung heroes at work 24/7. 👍🏻🙏
Airport: we have aircraft landing and taking off every 80 seconds
C0vid: I'm about to end this man's whole career
The problem with airport firemen is that they have often have zero experience of real fires. Airplane accidents happening at airport are so rare that most firefighters don’t see a real fire in their entire career. Simulations are one thing and a real situation an another. It’s possible that half of them freeze in panic when (if) confronting a real situation.

A few months ago in Manila - NAIA , a business jet being used As an Air Ambulance crashed ad burned. You can see one of the Aircraft Rescue Firefighters wearing flip flops , shorts and a tee shirt next to a 750,000$ Truck
I think most of the time they got nothing to do. Especially now. Best posting.
That’s what you see from the outside 🤷🏻♂️ come try and you’ll know the workload ✌🏼
Good job May God bless you
SCDF firefighters are mostly NSFs and they attend to real emergencies and fires most of the time. They are the true heroes!
Bro this one is AES and not SCDF
All fire fighters are true heroes, doesn’t matter from which organisation or country :)
John Wig lol anyone who puts their lives to help others is a hero, volunteers or even the people who just help to maintain the trucks and stuff
in the SCDF including REGULARS, firefighters attend to real emergencies and fire most of the time too.
Rudy Lopez uhhh people in ns also attend to emergencies
So cool wan the design of the fire truck waaaas
This is so cool. Thank you gentlemen.
Fireforce 💪🔥
They did exactly that in 2016 Flight SQ368.
bro the fire truck looks iceeeeee
Hello my name is Alistair Young and I am a teacher from Bradford in England. I am creating an educational video for our young people to teach them about the importance of respecting and recognising the amazing sacrifices of our emergency services across the world. Please can I use some of this footage in my video with appropriate crediting? Thanks so much.
Airport firefighter standards are universal 💯 props from an American Marine airport firefighter who performed the exact same duties in Hawaii & Iraq. Nice trucks by the way!
Sentinel prime...
Nice to see someone who understands common sense.
I work at Delhi international airport in ARFF since 2014....I Love my job though it's very risky and responsible but still I love to face different challenges everyday....For those who are saying that firefighters job is easy.....jst visit a fire station near u and PPE for one minute ....u will understand
@rahulsehrawat2010, hey I'm Tshepo from south Africa, a learner fire fighter. I would like to work as a aircraft fire fighter. Would you mind sending me your WhatsApp number so you could give me advices and also I can learn few things from you.
Whats the procedure if we are all trapped in and the doors are armed, how do you open an armed door?
God dayum theze trucks 😳
Can someone tell me why they have silver PPE?
Can we just take a moment how fast they get out and run so fast to get to the trucks
Good job guys
That fire truck is so much better
I thought it was a powerrangers SPD truck
So Scary, glad we have a good hands on deck
It makes me feel like I don't want to go on a plane
👇🏻
Can anyone tell me, what is the dimension of Tray which we use to create fire for monthly hot fire drill at airport
May God provide intellectual, physical and spiritual power and strength to the fire fighter department team-the fire fighter officers, vehicle maintenance group, call center team n overall team. May God empower and bless you all and ur family for the noble work of saving lives while risking one's life and forest fire safety through fire helicopters. Salute to every firefighter!! Amen!!....
Respect!
Now do how china responds to a health emergency

Very very Impressive.
America could and should learn from this.
Also impressed with the way the lay-flat hoses are rolled, so much faster to deploy than the American way of folding and stowing.
They are also lightweight and maintenance free. The hose you see is rolled in a method called "Dutch Roll" and has Standard Instantaneous Couplings
That's pretty awesome!
I would like to join your team. Is there an opportunity?
Omg thats so scary! I Live near there 😱
Great 😊
2:28 sorry but in my knowledge jet fuel is not very flammable, high flash point of 38C and auto ignition 210C. It only takes a flame when atomised in air. But of course huge amount of energy involved in a crash could cause ignition.
Minhao Lee things don’t need to be very flammable to catch fire. Especially in this case where a 800000+ kg vehicle is falling out of the sky at high speeds. When the plane hits the ground, the jet fuel will vapourise causeimg it to become extremely flammable. But u r correct since normal liquid jet fuel won’t easily catch fire. And jet fuel burns hotter than normal fuel
@2:21 uh..... no..... gasoline is many times more flammable than jet A. You can literally hold an open flame to jet A and it won’t ignite..... 👀
Gasoline won't either. There is not much difference between Gasoline (Diesel) and Jet-A1 (Kerosine)
That's why tanker trucks carrying Gasoline or Kero have UN Hazard Code 30: Flammable
I think you mean Petrol (Otto fuel) . . . (UN Hazard code 33: Flammable with risk of ignition/explosion)
I work in the radio communication industry. When they said that the radio waves from the handheld radios would ignite the fuel, that was %100 not true. That guy was not that knowledgable.
@@MrRCGNL go get some gasoline and jet a and try to light both with a match. I’ll wait...
@@mastercfromhalo3 I''ve already done that several times during FF training.
In all cases the match died en nothing hapened :-)
Note:
Gasoline is DIESEL fuel, not OTTO fuel
@@MrRCGNL you’re literally one of “those guys” that’s gonna make me upload a RUclips video to show you you’re wrong, aren’t you....
No doubt. JP 4 burns HOT! I believe most aircraft now burn JP8....still jet propellant is no joke as a fuel.
Admire your job
They makes this look so much cooler than what it is haha

Ups la AES!!
inb4 there's real emergency when doing a drill
The boys, and me showing up after the outbreak of the virus
Why changi airport firefighters not under SCDF?
they are specially trained to operate in changi airport exclusively
They have the same basic training but they are dedicated for airport operations because there are special skills and techniques they must master.
I believed it is due to the fact that Changi wants a long term full-time specialised professional team instead of a 1 year 10 months team
because they are auxiliary also their job not only in the changi airport
Muhd Sufian I know, all the 5 airports in Singapore. :)
Scary
there is no automated system for the tower to tell the station there is a fire. There fore if the chief wasn't near his phone the information could not be passes on. They should have a line for the mergency.
The ATC Tower has a Crash Alarm which activates the Fire Stations Alarms and other emergency services
Sentinel Prime is alive
Why they didn't have the 8x8? AMS has the same size and types of aircrafts and they used the 8x8, RTM and LEY gets from AMS the 6x6.
ICAO requirements only define the (1) time limits and (2) FF Cap.
It's airports resp. how the arrange that.
3 6x6 have can have the same FF cap as 2 8x8, but as their operating weight is lower, the might be faster so can save a couple of secs ...
Now no need to land off all the airplane sleeping
Did i see a boat at 4:25 ?
Yea, its likely theres a body of water near the airport, incase a plane ends up in it.
Muhamad that sound like from Indonesia
Malaysia: *Why always singapore...why not Malaysia ill cut your id singaporean card and change it to the Malaysian id card wahahahaha* (Passport to)
Changi airport is imo the biggest airport which is relevant.
did this man just say radio waves from a walkie-talking can ignite a fire? @2:23
🤣🤣🤣
Did my man really say a radio wave can set a flame
I'm not going to argue that jet fuel is not flammable, but it is not that volatile most of the time. Jet A has a flash point of 38°C, therefore fuel temperature has to be higher for vapours to ignite. If fuel is in contact with hot engine parts I guess it could create ignitable vapours.
Aww wheres my father.
