one diode glows for positive cycle and other on negative cycles. circuit path will be switch-led-resistor-diode-diode for both circuits. led corresponding to series on switch glows in half ac cycle.
AC source changes direction of flow electron periodically and diode work as switch that's why it will work..
Working of diode
When voltage is applied across a diode in such a way that the diode prohibits current, the diode is said to be reverse-biased. The voltage dropped across a conducting, forward-biased diode is called the forward voltage. ... Silicon diodes have a forward voltage of approximately 0.7 volts.

When both switches are on, +ve half cycle passes through right LED and -ve through left LED (Both glow). When right switch is off, +ve half cycle blocked by Diode (under the switch) and only left LED glow (for -ve half cycle) and vice versa

one led is working with negative voltage and second led is working with positive voltage, because there are two diode in each circuit one diode passed +ve and the another passed _ve voltage to led, on the other hand that circuit is working on ac voltage
