    Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. The topic today is about the magic of the five finger position on the piano. This is particularly important for beginning students. First I'm going to explain what I mean. Put your five fingers over five keys, for example right now I'm over C, D, E, F, G in both hands. Interestingly, when young students are playing, you'll notice that they will constantly be looking down, even if they are in a five finger position. But the keys aren't going to go anywhere! If you just leave your hands in this position you should be able to have your eyes closed and play whatever key you want. This is a great way to develop reading skills, because you know which fingers go down in each hand in order to play those five notes.

    Robert, the pianist can find any note or chord in any octave without looking. How ? The same way you find the light switch in your bedroom in the dark. With practice, your finger finds the switch. For beginners at the keys, close eyes and feel the black key groups descending in the left hand. Find major chords, intervals. You’ll miss a few times. You’ll have to check your guessed and suddenly you’re there. Work in the dark. Work up from the bottom. The right hand is usually easier if you’re right dominated. Takes about 3-5 hours of practice. When you get it right, look at your hand, then close your eyes and see the hand there. What a relief not to have to watch your hands find the notes you need.

    Sure but what about in situations where you don't have five fingers over five keys, your little outro piece at the end is a good example. You move up the keys, then jump down and back up again all in pretty quick succession. In moments like these I find the combination of perfoming the correct speed, timing, rhythm, and finding the right finger placement a real challenge, and that's with eyes glued to the keys!

    I was taught the five finger position from the beginning. I was even taught different positions depending on what key the piece was in as well as different positions for different octaves.

    My first instrument is guitar and I was told that no one wants to watch a guitar player that only looks down. So I practiced playing and pretended that I had an audience to interact with. Now when learning piano, I try to look at the wall (fake audience) as much as possible.

    Think of it as similar to a typing lesson -- left hand fingers on the keys asdf, right hand fingers on jkl; and your thumbs on the spacebar.

    It may work for students that dont have disabilitiys . but dyslixia students need one on one in person. I been looking for someone that teaches suzkie method for keyboard instrumrnts. Even play by ear may help these disorders. My problem is unlearning mistakes i learned of the years. Added notes and left out notes. 73

    Look at all your new toys! I just got the Atem mini for myself!
    It's also important to remember to sit in the same position every time you play piano. Especially when you're first learning. I find that this causes the most interference for students when trying to gain muscle memory. Even as a professional, I find that if I'm making silly mistakes while reading music, it's because my bum has shifted a little to the right or left.

    I am really trying to get better at not looking at my hands -w- ,, it mainly effects me when ever there are large jumps in songs, because I always look to make sure I hit it,, and if I don't look, I hit the wrong key a lot of the time -,w,-

    May I add to that advice? If your hands are about normal size, try to follow fingering guidance in the score and work out which finger plays which note without moving hand position. I have been training myself to not use my favourite finger when sight reading. It's slowly paying off I think.

    About maybe a technical side of your controller that is in development, have you any current plans to make it somehow compatible with MIDI XP or MIDI High Resolution Velocity Prefix control change number eighty-eight (88) data? As an occasional player, I am like others right now using Hi-res CC#88 capable modeled pianos in a software, namely PIANOTEQ,. So, I want to know if your keyboard -when once it becomes finally developed- might reach some of the higher resolutions in dynamics, much like a Disklavier...

    I have a problem with leap precision of octave . it seems 1st and 5th finger are less sensitive about on which key they are while expanded into Octave.

    • @switchlaserflip9243
      @switchlaserflip9243 4 года назад

      I agree. Spreading your hands into an octave without looking is easy, but moving your whole hand to a different position without looking is very hard. It's a required skill to learn pieces that have position changes on both hands simultaneously.

      It is absolutely true that large leaps changing hand position presents great challenges. When you watch great blind pianists, it makes you realize what is possible!

    I have recently just gotten myself to stop looking at my hands and the keys while playing after many years of doing it wrong (i.e. looking at my hands). It is a challenge, but the bad habits can be broken with lots of concentration and hard work.
