One of fun fact is that Joseon (the former kingdom of Korea) resembles Plato's ideal country in some ways. In the ideal state described in Plato's "Republic", a philosopher king rules the country, but Joseon instead made its king a philosopher through education. Therefore, the kings of Joseon had to study very hard from the time they were princes, and even after becoming king, they had to attend seminars and study every day.
What makes previous Korea's kingdom (Joseon) different from China and Japan in the past is that it has its own democratic tradition that the people are the king's heaven and the king must work for the people. So, in the past in Korea, ordinary people also submitted complaints directly to the king, and the king had to handle the complaints on the people's behalf.
Gyeongbokgung Palace(경복궁, 景福宮) is the palace of Joseon (1392-1910), the former kingdom of Korea. The meaning of the name Gyeongbokgung Palace is that this country will have great blessings forever and that all its people will live in peace and happiness through those blessings.
The arrangement of the various palaces of Gyeongbokgung Palace symbolizes the founding ideology of Joseon, which is that the king must play his role as the control tower of state affairs, the king and his subjects must work diligently for the people, and as a result, all the people live happily.
The founding fathers of previous Korean Kingdom (Joseon dynasty (1392-1910)) thought that peoples are king's heaven and King must serve for the people. Therefore the Korean Kings who lived in Gyeongbokgung Palace were stressed to study and work hard. The Korean Kings must attend academic seminars twice a day and their daily life was recorded in very detail by the servant. As a result, we now have very detailed report of every daily life of each Kings since 1392. Collectively, Korean Kings were forced to become "Philosopher King" described in 'Republic' by Plato. The Korean prince must study very hard to become a King and if he can't pass academic test, he was punished by King. The stress that Korean prince must endure was so hard that some of prince went mad.
Japan invaded Korea twice. In 1592, Japanese army who were consisted of 300,000 soldiers invaded Korea and the war lasted for 7 years. Japanese army was very cruel and brute and destroyed Gyeongbokgung palace. After long and tough war, Korean army managed to defeat Japanese army. Gyeongbokgung palace was rebuilt after the war. But Japan invaded Korea again in 1888 and colonized Korea in 1910. Then Japan destroyed again Gyeongbokgung palace and Korea rebuilt part of Gyeongbokgung palace since 1990. Japan invaded Korea in 1888 and manchuria in 1930, next China in 1937, then finally Japan invaded United States in 1941.
