I think that, in the original, he didn't intend for it to seem as if he was calling Nelson Mandela a terrorist. So that could be why he included "they call". Alternatively, he may have changed his opinions on Nelson Mandela and realised that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Who knows? Because I don't in all honesty.
