The Butt Fumble, Mark Sanchez's greatest legacy, deserves a deep rewind | Jets - Patriots 2012

- We all remember where we were when we first saw the butt fumble. With his NFL career already gaining heavy downward momentum, Mark Sanchez put a big exclamation point on his ineptitude when he ran right into Brandon Moore's butt. It was a glaring moment on the Jets most embarrassing loss at the hands of the Patriots.

Only the Jets could execute a fumble so embarrassingly bad that it would require a forensic investigation 6 years after the fact just to begin to understand it...
I still don't understand it...
😅😅😅😅😅😅😄😄😄
J Edgar Hoover wouldn't have been able to solve this mystery.
Second worst play ever. The worst was Chuck Pagono’s Colts snapping the ball with a backup receiver at Center and punter in the middle of the field.
Kyle you win
“Caught off guard by the act of defense.” Perfect.

How could he not?
It's because Vince Wolfork pushed the butt into his path.
I like butts and I cannot lie! 🤣
This is what this series was for
It's almost as though the Butt Fumble happened just so that this video could be made about it years later. God works in mysterious ways.
"Actual human beings" shows Skip Bayless, lmao.
Did we really need an 8 minute break down of this play?
Edit: Hell yea we did. Great Vid guys.
No we didnt 😭😭😭😭

I utterly enjoy the suffering of jets' fans.
@@I_Cunt_Spell fair enough
They needed more time because this seriously understates the context.
The Jets were in a position with great chance to tie up the game.
Six plays, three fumbles, three NE touchdowns (one each offense, defense, and special teams), 49 seconds game time, and probably the most hilarious play in NFL history later:
It was 28-0 and the game was effectively over.
5:38 That standing backflip deserves a deep rewind!
wanderlustwarrior that was perfect! He would’ve had a better career as a gymnast than a Jets player 😂😂
I looked it up lol he did a cartwheel hand spring thingy first to lead into it, super impressive tho.
Imagine the constant suffering of being a Jets fan.
Tylersaurand it hurts so bad
Life is suffering.
I don't have to imagine. The same year we beat the Patriots in the playoffs, we lost to them in the regular season 45-3. Danny Woodhead beat us by himself. I was thrilled when we beat them, but crushed when we lost to the Steelers the next game. That was the closest we got to a Superbowl since I've been a Jets fan. It has been downhill ever since.
I would really rather not
Tylersaurand I am an eagles fan that was bad but not anymore 😁
“It’s time to unleash Tebow” - the Mets
I literally choked on my coffee at the part where he says Matt Leinart had a long and prosperous career in the NFL. That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time.
@Notorious BIG thanks for the info; I am a pretty much lifelong Tennessee Titans fan, so I remember when they drafted Vince Young and the Cardinals drafted Matt Leinart. I will look for those other videos you mentioned.

The "awww" by the crowd when he fumbled was epic. It was the sound of all hope for Sanchez being but fumbled out.
You skipped the play right after the Greene fumble, 83 yard TD pass from Brady to Shane Vereen (Bart Scott got smoked like the chump he is), then the butt fumble return for TD by, oh hey again Steve Gregory, then the ensuing kickoff return by McKnight fumbled right into the hands of Julian Edelman for a TD.
3 Touchdowns in 52 seconds, 1 on offense, 1 on defense and 1 on special teams. The whole Jets team was just as much a comedy of errors as Sanchez.
It's the perfect representation of the Jets as a whole.
This is covered in their The Worst series, The Wort NFL Thanksgiving Game
They didn't skip it, it just wasn't the focus of the episode.
Yup. The Jets fumbled three times on four plays. That quarter was an ass-paddling by the Patriots.

Born and raised in NJ. There certainly are cows and corn and lots of farms. But certainly NOT in East Rutherford.
For a dude who beat Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in their primes in the playoffs, it's tough that we deem this his greatest legacy.

Hey he also ate a hot dog that one time
Sanchez had a thanksgiving day feast *mmmmmmmm*
Chick Hicks Yeah he ate a lot of ass.
Instead of basted turkey he got basted bewtocks.

I appreciate that you highlighted Brandon Moore had pushed Wilfork back. I believe stupid Collinsworth started the narrative that Wilfork manhandled Moore and that's why Sanchez ran into him and that's how people remember it.
"Headed straight for that butt" lol
I was one of the many watching live, my dad and I nearly ruptured something from laughing so hard. We recorded the game just so we could watch it over and over and show everyone at our house.
I watched live. Didn't know I was watching history.
I was AT the game.
My dad and I, both Patriots fans in NYS, decided to go to this game because it was Thanksgiving and was close enough to go to. Seeing this in person was magical, although we contained our excitement until we were in the car after the game.
I feel sorry for Brandon Moore. He went to a Pro Bowl and did all that work after not even being drafted and all he’s known for us being the guy whose rear end Mark Sanchez sprinted into.
Fast forward to thanksgiving 2022, still iconic.
"And why is he headed straight for that butt."
I just spat out my lunch. I'm workin' from home and you're making me spew all over the place! hahaha
BEST. THANKSGIVING. EVER.
“Why is he heading for that butt?” - questions I ask myself every night
No ones gonna mention that Matt Leinart joke?? OK
his long and fruitful career lol
I recall reading that, despite his failure as a QB, due to savvy investing, Leinart was worth (if memory serves) about $30 million when he retired. What's that? $1 million per completion?
@@davidsigalow7349 At least he managed to make his money.
Also had a few nights in the Lohan. Few other spots as well... so he peaked in college.... he did it just trust him
7:49 (Not as much as what we need to hear from this.) 🤦🏽♂️😆
imagine going 13-3 as the jets... wait that's only in madden
Pyre Gaming i still have memories of loving the jets in madden 2011 and 2012 XD
I guess you're right -- the closest they've ever come was going 12-4 in 1998, when they eventually lost in the AFC CG to John Elway and the Broncos. (Though their 11-3 1968 SB season was technically their highest win %)
@@Zalis116 they had the lead in that game at halftime. I actually they were gonna win and go to the superbowl but then I remembered they're the Jets.
A single game score against a weak Browns doesn't count. ;)
ha, "great feet" and if there's one thing Rex Ryan knows...

Heroes get remembered, *butt* legends never die.
I can't fathom the fact the Jets, Knicks, and Mets all won tiles within a year of one another
Crazy how you can say "the butt fumble" and everyone knows what you're talking about, even people who don't watch football.
The name is self implied, but also a perfect representation of not only the game but Sanchez's career and the Jets organization.
If a comet grazes the earth, even people that aren't into astronomy gonna know.
The Butt Fumble is like that.
American football may be hard to learn for a novice, but the stupidity of running into a stationary object is universal
Your best (and most meaningful) rewind yet.
Made me miss Jon Bois 49% less.

Jonathan Tinsley I’m a Hawks fan and I want to see that breakdown. Because whew that call was atrocious!
Who is Mark Sanchez and why is he running towards this mans butt?
Excellent. As the patriots waste into irrelevance, I'll always have these memories to carry me through.
You should have mentioned how high everyone who didn't know football was on Teibow when the Jets signed him. He had a brief good run, which he credited to his religious devotion. The press ate it up and he was way overestimated. I don't know why the Jets went for that. Maybe it was because his star power was strong enough they thought it could motivate Sanchez, even if he wasn't actually a good player?
Sam well now he’s a stud in the Mets farm system 😂
gotmusic0915 Thirty year old minor leaguer and out for the season. Still more stunt than stud.
Evil Otto I was using “stud” completely sarcastically, but to be fair he was a AA all star.
gotmusic0915 and he didn’t even have the worst stats of all the AA all stars
dude had heart, could run, but never throw. still, he gave you a better chance than many to win. wasn't disproven, just wasn't used.
Dude said Matt Leinart had a “Long & fruitful” playing career 😂😂
I love this segment. We truly forget the little things. Keep doing this please
As a jets fan born in 1988, the butt fumble is my greatest memory with this team. So glad it's finally getting it's due and a video like this.
Love your content SB Nation.
Do a rewind on the 1999 NFC Championship game and how the Vikings had it all lined up but blew it.
Do a rewinder on the butler int
Nathan Wilder yes plz
Nathan Wilder it definitely should mention that Carroll made a similar mistake during the 06 Rose bowl
YES!!!!
Don’t really need to. EVERYONE knows why it happened.
Nicholas Payne how about the Tracy porter pick 6
As a Mariners fan, I'd like to see one of these about the 1995 ALDS against the Yankees. Everyone knows Edgar's Double, but most people don't know about Game 4, Griffey's 5 Home Runs, The 15-Inning Game 2, the fact that the M's mounted something short of a miracle September to even get to the playoffs, the relocation rumors. There's more than enough material for a Rewinder if you ask me.
That'd be sweet, but what I want more is to see the Mariners make some new memories! Though I'm sure you also want that.
Definitely. Fingers crossed that they hold on this year.
Agreed.
Jake Duarte remember when the mariners had a 110 season just to lose it to the Yankees in the postseason I believe it was 2000
Yeah but it’s the Mariners. Why are even a team anymore
I was too judgmental to think this had much of a backstory, but now I remember a lot of those smaller details. This series is awesome.
Do Patrick Kane's 2010 Stanley Cup winning OT goal. I feel like it would be interesting, the end of the Blackhawks' drought plis the end of the Flyers incredible playoff run
the Flyers knocking out the Canadiens, marked the first time a decade had gone by without the Habs winning a Cup
This entire video was just amazing
Exactly 5 years later, this is still classic comedy.
10 years later, it's still sooo fukin funny 🤣
I remember watching this game on television that day and I was on vacation in New York City
You need to do a rewind on Jose Bautista's home run against Texas in Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS. So much stuff to rewind for how the game and series got to that point.
This is by far the best series, keep it up
Imagine being an NFL quarterback for 10 years, and your most memorable play is running into your offensive lineman's ass and fumbling the ball for a defensive touchdown
This is the greatest video on RUclips. So much subtle humor
Of course Rex Ryan said he saw great feet
thanks for the deep history on this terribly memorable moment
Can you do a deep rewind on Tracy Porters pick 6 in Super Bowl 44 next ?
Then deep rewind of the original Beast Mode run including Porter's being punked and subsequently giving up on the play
Well you got a Tracy Porter pick as the next episode, so close enough.
I can't stop watching this series along with beef history. Keep up the good work.
Marc Sanchez was never good. Even though he has “great feet”.
0 time champ dosen't
@@CyberchaoX He's in the same tier as Foles. Great in the clutch, not great in the long-term. Future commenters please debate if Eli Manning belongs to this tier as well
@@CyberchaoX its said during the video he was ranked 29th in passing and they ran the ball more than they passed. When they came across teams who could stop the run, Sanchez got exposed pretty clearly. He was like Kirk Cousins with a defense that can win a couple playoff games.
The Sexy Rexy "great feet" quote was a nice touch lol
as a jets fan i still wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat remembering this nightmare
Just a thought, it would be pretty cool if you did a rewind of the infamous Boise St-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl back in 2006-07.
Or the Kick 6
It would’ve been a very memorable play just the butt fumble by itself but the fact that it was picked up and run back for a touchdown makes it historic and eternally unforgettable.
America's Heartland East Rutherford New Jersey lmaooooo you got to love this channel
this is one of my all time favorite plays.
5:30, yeah, Santonio Holmes tends to do that
It's weird seeing this play without a sound effect when Shanchez hits the butt. The one urinatingtree uses.
I remember being at that game sitting almost near the sideline thinking this is one of the greatest moments I’ve ever seen in sports history and I’m not even a Jets fan
America's heartland East Rutherford New Jersey. Yes
Cant believe it’s been 10 years
I will never forget the collective "WTF" look on everyone of my relative's faces when this happened lol! That was a fun Thanksgiving lol!
The rest of the team is following the actual play call lol
Though I’m sure you have plenty of ideas , I think a deep rewind on Jose’s bat flip HR would be wicked !

*Smh Mark Sanchez should be deleted literally like an old folder long and forgotten*
Great video
Skip " its time to unleash tebow" omg skip 😂😂😂 such a comedian
that was funny THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
Are you able to explain why, with his vision completely unobstructed, he ran DIRECTLY into someone's ass. That's what gets me about that play. Not the fact that the ass causes the fumble, but the fact that he can very clearly see what is ahead of him but still sprints directly into someone who is quite clearly going to remain stationary.
You should ABSOLUTELY do a deep rewind of Eric Bruntlett's unassisted triple play to end the game after making two mistakes that could've cost his team the game
This was good but it wasn’t *Pretty Good*
