      @Brandon Ivey That's an old wive's tale, though. The reason les pauls seem to sustain longer is because the pickups do better picking up the tail end of the string vibration, and because of the weight.
      If you put humbuckers in a heavy strat and strummed one next to the other, the sustain is the same. Even on a light strat, it's really close. The 6k ohm single coil strat pickups are really bad in terms of compression, though - they don't pick up the tail end of the physical string sustain that's occurring.

    I love the sound of an LP clean, as much as I agree with strats w/single coils giving out the most beautiful bell-like cleans, there’s something about Les Paul cleans that are unmatched by any other humbucker equipped guitar

    Took me a life time to find "the One". I'm old, been noodling around on guitars for over 40 years. I first wanted an electric guitar after hearing and seeing Paul Kossoff as a kid....but even then, LP's were expensive....Had 6 LP's over the decades, and just never connected to them like I did my Strats, or even my Grtesch's. UNTIL...I was told by the local guitar shop owner, "Man, you need to check out this used R8 VOS I have in the back.." My son's took guitar lessons there so I played this thing about three times, about a total of about 3 hours, and was in love. I NEVER was so inspired by any LP like this before...Sold 2 guitars to pay for it, went back to buy it the next week, GONE....Two years later, I get a call, " It's back...the R8 is back..." I went back and there it was....the owner traded it in for a Warren Haynes 335. The stars were aligned, I just happen to have sold one of my three Hiwatt's recently and had the funds for the R8. To this day, it is by far one of my favorite guitars in my collection. I know everybody jumps on the Gibson bashing train, but when you find one of the good ones, you know it, it's undeniable. Mine has been borrowed by three studios, and I play it, and record with it constantly. Its in the rack as one of my all time go to guitars with a small handful of others...Looking back, when I was strictly a Strat guy, or even a Gretsch guy, I would never have called the Les Paul one of my favorite guitars since i never clicked with one before...that changed. I hate ever saying "It's my single favorite..anything" But it is. Love playing all my guitars, have a room full of GREAT guitars...but if only one could be kept....it'd be my R8 VOS.

      Came across a used 2013 R8 at Wildwood Guitars in Louisville, Colorado back in 2017, and Lance the sales rep had me step outside of their tiny storefront away from earshot of 2 other customers and then asked me if I had a problem with expletives. I said "not really, why? He then said " because I just had to tell you that the guitar you just bought is "Stupid Fucking Good" !!! (LoL)! He said that everyone that works at Wildwood plays all the guitars that someone trades in, and that they all agreed that it was "One of the good ones" and that it was a very special guitar. I also love and own Strats and PRS, but none hold a candle to my R8!

    I’m a Hendrix, Clapton, and SRV fan so I never cared for LPs and I’ve tried so many Les Paul’s ranging from $400-2500 and oddly enough I fell in love with a $300 used MIK Jay Tursey Serpent LP… it had a more strat feeling neck and it’s so loud acoustically and resonated better than the expensive ones. 4:18 I’ve had the exact opposite experiences with Les Pauls. I’ve found they’re hands down by far the EASIEST guitar to play. I felt faster, more capable and more accurate. I always thought that’s why they were more expensive.

    • @JamesMurphyProducer
      @JamesMurphyProducer 3 года назад +4

      That has more to do with the scale length than the price… At it’s 24.75” scale length, an LP is noticeably easier to play, given the same string gauge and tuning, than a Strat, because Strats have a 25.5“ scale length… The longer the scale length, the more tension needed to bring the string to pitch, and therefore the more difficult it is to bend

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 2 года назад +2

      @@JamesMurphyProducer It's not just the tension but also fretting stretch with your hand. I also find LP to be easier to play since I have small hands. If you have a LP with a 60s or more modern neck, and reasonably sized frets, it'll be easier to play than your average strat in general. I find the double cut design to be overrated as well. You rarely play that high on the neck, and when you do you almost never touch the low strings anyway. I think a more comfortable neck profile and shorter scale length are absolutely the top criteria for playability.

    Robert I am 53 years old and fell in love with the guitar at a young age listening to my step dad playing along his favorite country artists on his gorgeous 1966(?) Gibson Hummingbird acoustic. One day he got out this red electric guitar and started playing along with the Ventures, I was hooked! It wasn't until years later I learned that was an Ovation ES style. At 12 years old in 1977 I started getting into the heavier music and KISS was my first favorite "modern" rock band. It was because of Ace Frehley and a post that I always wanted a Gibson Les Paul. I saw this poster that came out of a magazine of this guy, I had no clue who he was, he was standing there onstage and looked as if he had just hit this massive chord on a Les Paul that looks just like the one you own. His shirt open, that cool rock star look on his face - between those two I always wanted a Gibson Les Paul.
    At 53 I own over 20 guitars right now and 6 of them are Gibson Les Paul studio models. 3 Epiphone Les Pauls, 1 Gretsch style and a couple of others known as el cheapos lol. What you said is so very true - every guitar feels differently and even though my 6 Les Paul's are all studio models they feel different which in turn makes me feel different when I play them. My favorite is my alpine white 2005 with a 490R in the neck and 57 classic on the bridge. My second favorite is my beast Les Paul. It is a 2013 Sully Erna signature model. I call it a beast because even though it only has one pickup this thing feels like it weighs 20 pounds lol. It is a full 2 inches thick and has a 57 classic pickup. The sustain on this guitar will blow your friggin doors off!! My white is my favorite because of the two pickups though.
    2017, I am checking out some posters for my grand daughter, glow in the dark ones, in a local head shop. I decide to look through the posters that are not rolled up but are on cardboard backs and ready to hang up. About halfway through this stack of posters what do I find? a much larger version of that magazine pull out poster of that guy I told you about in the beginning of comment. There he was, it was like stepping back into time when I saw and I recognized him immediately now that I know more about rock music. All these years and I could never really remember what his looked like, but as soon as I saw that poster I knew him and I knew I had to have it, none other than Jimmy Page himself!
    I own several other models of guitars, the Strat and Strat types are just not my thang, I don't like the way they feel in my hands and I don't like the sounds of them. I do however own a cheap $100 starcaster made by fender that I love! I put a hotrail at the bridge and changed out the pickguard and for some reason I love playing that thing, hated and sold within 6 months after buying my brand new Strat, love the cheap one most would consider junk lol. I just purchased a brand new Tele with a double humbucker at the bridge and I gotta tell ya, I love it!!
    Anyway, great video and man that opening song you did!! WOW!! Loved it!!

    I have an 89 Les Paul standard and my buddies I jam with always want to play it when we get together to play in their garage. The thing that blows me away is how long he notes will last. I've gotten spoiled by it and didn't really notice it until I switched guitars with my buddy and played the strat copy he's playing. You hit a note and it just dies off... and I'm like 'where did the sound go?" The LP just lets that note ring for a long time.

    The Les Paul is my favorite guitar. Of course that may have something to do with having the same Birthday as Slash but who knows. Currently half of my electric guitars are Les Paul style.
    I've got a Gibson Les Paul Studio Premium Plus, Gibson Les Paul Studio Swirl with the goldtop finish, Gibson Les Paul Special with P90s, PRS SE Zach Myers and the one I built myself when I went to Luthiery School.
    The one I built is a mix of my favorite stuff and has 24 frets with a 25" scale length and the control layout is like an SG with the output jack on top. Also put a mini switch for each humbucker (59 and JB combo) for series/split/parallel. Gave the neck a nice beefy 50's profile as well.

    I have the opposite view. Les Pauls play easier to me. I always feel like they can be a finesse guitar if you want to play it that way. Strats are the guitars that I feel fight me. I have to work to play a strat. I play strats in some situations because of that. I can get really aggressive with a Strat. It is easy to get too aggressive on a Les Paul. You are the first person I remember saying the Les Paul fights you more than a strat. Maybe it has to do with setups. I tend to run action higher on a Strat with heavier strings to get more oomph and less string buzz.

    Hey Robert, we actually met before your Vola demo at Flipside Music in Denver. Great store and the guitar tech there is a personal friend of mine, whom I brought my Charvel Crackle model 3Dr for a setup. Anyways, I DO have a very special 1988 Les Paul custom that I bought in 1996 and had it since. The frets are about roached on it but it is an absolute tone monster and has the thinnest neck profile I have ever played on an LP. It didn't come with the stock pickups, which whom the previous owner put a JB in the bridge. I put a Gibson 500T in it a few months after getting it, but the neck pickup has remained a Duncan Alnico II pro, which has become my favorite neck pickup. Just soooo smooth and buttery. I will go to my grave with this guitar.

    A SD 59 in the neck of a Les Paul is the best solo tone one can ask for...you can even get some great crunch rythm tones...it sounds full but not muddy...awesome pickup. A custom 5 in the bridge position of a Strat also sounds awesome

    Own a 96 Les Paul Studio, it’s beat to hell and the finish is starting to wear off the top and sides. I installed a 57 classic in the neck and 57 classic plus in the bridge. It’s a Tone monster and my number one go to guitar. It’s just magical.

    Nice playing, fun video! I share your sentiments - if you find the right one then go for it. I got lucky, in 1974 I bought my first electric from a friend who was already an established player in NZ - it was a 1968 LP Custom (NZD 800 / USD 550 approx). I used it thru the 70s with the band live and it's lived in my studio ever since. I have tried a lot of LPs since but I'm so used to the 60s neck and the 'fretless wonder' neck that I struggle with some of the 59 re-issue types etc. Anyway - enjoyed your playing, cheers!

Man I love it, I've always been a Fender guy ever since the beginning! But now....I just can't put this thing away! Haha! 🤟😁 RAWK!

    What amazes me is how so many younger guitarist say " awww I bought a brand new one and it plays like crap". Maybe you might do a video on how many times you need to do a set-up on a new guitar versus a used one. I've had one for 10 years and it plays better every year. YOU'RE AWESOME !!!

    I bought an Ibanez RG7420 a few years ago but I’m honestly thinking of buying a Les Paul to take things back to basics. I enjoy playing my 7 string but for some reason the Les Paul takes you to a completely different place musically speaking that is unmatched. I wish they were more affordable.....but maybe an Epiphone LP is a good starting point.

  • @jvin248
    @jvin248 5 лет назад

    The TOM bridge -- it anchors so many players and gives some natural palm muting. Pick up a Tele and many players hand rests behind the saddles or behind the bridge plate (picking over top the bridge pickup), or a Strat where the volume knob makes you play closer to the neck pickup. Cycle through your guitars, play some songs, and stop to see where your picking hand is resting and picking. Now go back to the LP and pick in those other places. LP will twang... look up the Bill Kirchen Hot Rod Lincoln video (the one with the brown Tele) and watch where he picks.

    Totally agree, there is NOTHING like a Les Paul! My (non-musical) wife didn't understand until she heard Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues" -- after that, she gave me carte blanche: if I ever find THE Les Paul, I should buy it on the spot. Unfortunately, I've never even come close to finding the right one, but I'll never give up!

    That riff at the beginning is absolutely kille. Great chording, effective wankery, and room.
    The shorter scale is part of the Les Paul equation. I'm an LP man all the way, except when I'm playing a tele. The original and best RnR machines.

    I think Les Paul’s are the only guitars that inspire me to play everything. Once I pick mine up I never want to put it down. Where when I play my Strat. I’m finding the Strat sounds I know and love. I think it’s hard to find your own sound. But when I play my Les Paul I feel more like it’s me. Even when I play my custom 24 or rg. I love them and love how they sound and feel but once my Les Paul is in my hands. I’m like this is it. This is how I want to sound all the time. I’d like to at some point get my hands on a McCarty 594 single cut and see if I feel the same way. But I’m pretty sure I will because the Les Paul like you said sounds big and when I played a 245sc it sounded almost identical to my custom 24. But I trust Paul to make his top core model to sound the best

    I have a '08 LP standard, '77 Special, '91 Studio lite and R56 Goldtop - all good - all different. What blows me away is I recently bought the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute (rainbow finish) which has Gibson 57's in it as well as push/pull pots. What an astonishingly good Les Paul! Paid $750 for it. Paid $3k for my Standard, $.4.5k for the R56. The Epiphone Tribute is unbelievably close in sound - to the Standard...I suppose because Epiphone/Gibson sprung for the 57's. Blind test would be very difficult to discern which is the Standard and which is the Tribute. What a buy. I've recently ordered the Epiphone Joe Bonamassa '58 "Black Beauty" Custom ($800) to see what it can do. Anyway I played Fenders for most of my career and love 'em. Didn't find a Les Paul I could get along with until years later. Learned how to control them - because indeed, as you say, they have to be played differently. Anyway - LP's are wonderful guitars. Thank you for the video.

    Hey Robert, big fan of your content! I do have a question for you.. I never see you playing a PRS custom or CE version (any PRS at all, really). Is it because you have an aversion to them? I’m on the fence about a LP or a PRS CE24. Would love to hear your perspective.

    Compared to the strats are les pauls harder to play? Before I got my Strat I had an esp ltd and they are very similiar to les pauls, and it seems like it was so much harder to play than the strat. Do you think the les pauls have the edge when it comes to clean sounds as well? I thought about getting an epiphone just to have some type of les paul.

    Love this vid. One thing for me, though, is I've always found playing a Les Paul to be easier than other guitars. The reason I spend more time practicing with my Tele is that it is harder for me to play than my LP. Anytime I'm practicing something new, I do it with the Tele first because even if I nail it on the LP, the Tele is like starting over.
