I completed my engineering degree in 2012. Man how easy is it for this generation to make their working project for the last semester. I remember my days. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 You are doing god's work for the students.
1975 (ish) I worked on a Mergenthaler VIP (Variable Input Phototypesetter) which used a Stepper Motor for each of its three drums; each drum had 6 user-changeable font character negatives, which clipped on with a wire clip. Software would select the appropriate drum; the stepper motor would rotate the drum to the desired character, and a xenon strobe would flash the character through a zoom lens and moving mirror to photographic paper. It was very precise, but very loud. I layer order on an updated version of the machine which used much quieter servo motors to accomplish the positioning
1985(ish) I wanted to build a robot arm and tried to source stepper motors in NZ where I lived. No one knew what they were… never got to build my robot arm.

Why dont they scale up this tech for industrial uses?
Because stepper motors are very bad at being motors.
The basic operation of a stepper motor requires enough current to run the motor with a load even if it has no load attached, this means that whilst for most other motor types they run at low current until a load is applied a stepper motor runs at a high current always, this translates to a very ineficient motor and a lot of heat generated for relatively low power.
There are methods to overcome this by using something called Field Oriented Control or FOC for short but to do that on a stepper motor you need a very high resolution encoder and by the time you buy and attach those most other motor types are cheaper and can do the same precision with some control software.
Stepper motors still have one fairly unique feature among motors where because they can keep current flowing whilst standing still they can apply holding torque most other motor types can not do that.
finally ofcourse this video is simplified in actual use you usually use some form of microstepping and current control to get the most out of your motor this means the controllers for stepper motors are fairly complex if you compare them to controllers for other motor types.
