  • An analog studio consumes more power then a single macbook, ofcourse. But does it consume as much as you might expect?

    Not something most of the engineers talk about, even though I'm a only-ITB guy this video was really interesting.

    Probably worth piping audio down every channel of the console as well, with at least one boost and one cut on every single channel eq. I’m sure that when these box of tricks are processing signal, then the power consumption will go up some more... could be wrong though !....
    Good Video non the less
    Cheers

    correct me if im wrong, but analoug equipment will consume more power, signifigantly more if there is signal running through the circuit. my mixer works fine but if i want to run all 32 channels i need to use my external higher wattage psu or it will get super hot.

    How are you doing with heat? I don't have even half of your hardware, but sometimes after few hours of working, temperature in room can go up to few degrees

    The average price of a kwh in Europe is around 20cts.. if you take 1000W per hour, during 10 hours a day, 25 days a month....10'000w x 25 = 250kwh........ at 20cts, that will cost you 50 euros.
    While 100 Watts may look like nothing, we should take into account that an audio equipment, in general, will only need a few tens of watts to work.
    I would like to know how many watts junkiexl needs to power all those 900 synths, effects, speakers, servers..... ;)

    Nice Video! :) But wouldn't it have consumed even more power, if you had something playing on your speakers?! :D

    I have one issue and maybe someone can help me out. I have Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface connected via usb to my PC. But it seems to have some power/electricity issues because sometimes if I switch on the lights in my flat or start my oven or any other electricity consuming device, the audio interface restarts causing terrible noise (since my monitors are set at quite high volume). I presume there is some issue with connection of my setup to the power. What can you advice to resolve this issue?

    Several people asked what happened when you started running speakers, since that is the most important output of any recording system, n'est-ce pas?
    I talked with a sound store who had some figures from the Love Parade. I might be mistaken but I think it was over a Terawatt-hour of energy.

    I don't know what kind of harddrive your friend is using but there is hardly any in it to be noticable.
    Besides that, HDD can run fairly decently in 45-50c (not recommended obviously.)
    But that aside, great video. If anything it also shows that you shouldn't be scared of analog.
    Most people will not have a full studio of analog gear. Just a few compressors with some preamps. It's really not that much power then even with airco.

    I've wondered how much my TAC Scorpion console actually consumes as it's power supply does tend to heat the room up a bit. I do not notice an increase in the electric bill unless I use it all day for 5 days a week which I do not do very often.

  • @Sool101

    What is your airco doing on your audio group? Or are all groups inside your studio measured by that little display?

    In a nutshell, your studio consume like a vacuum cleaner (1000 to 2000watts) constantly on.

    And that is why you ground your equipment before someone touches anything. Don't want to get electrocuted with 1000+ watts.

    A brilliant video but, and there is always a big noisy but. Gear consumes more power when you run them flat out compared to having them idling. Pardon me for being a bit pedantic :)

    One thing you didn't count in is that as you said, the analog gear does warm the room. Therefore the air con has to do more work to keep a certain temperature, so you'd need to count this added power usage as a part of the consumption of the analog gear. Although the extra electricity isn't caused by the gear, it's indirectly affecting the consumption and cost of the air con.

    • @Whiteseastudio
      @Whiteseastudio  6 лет назад +1

      There is a big gap in the video compared to real time between switching on the gear and switching on the aircon... So the last situation is the stable situation...

    I wonder how often I should power up my 2 preamps and 1 compressor, when I'm not using them every day? I know they are happiest when 'alive' (so am I!) - should I for instance power them up 1 hour a week, or just leave them on forever and forget about the bill??

    • @Whiteseastudio
      @Whiteseastudio  6 лет назад

      If you use them, keep them turned on for the rest of the day... If you don't use them for a year, turn them on for a few days... I'm not a fan of keeping things turned on 24/7

    20W of power from CPU is actually not a whole lot, about what a midrange laptop CPU would use. I'd expect more like 80-120W from a decent desktop CPU. Your measurement thingy might not be too accurate.

    • @Whiteseastudio
      @Whiteseastudio  5 лет назад +1

      I think that the CPU was drawing 80W, and with the extra load it went to 100W....

  • @kogure7235

    When I run very video intensive applications like video games/rendering on my high end machine, my power usage does increase quite a lot. My monitors are around 100W, my PC on idle about 150W, and gains 500W when everything is on 100% use. All together is about 20 cents/hour, so it adds up during the month.

    If your Mac consumes 500watts in idle-condition something is wrong. Your fridge might just came on or something...

    Ummmm Are you going to run sound through that analog stuff??? Analog stuff doesn't use much power without sound going through it. In fact the louder you turn it the more power it uses right? LOL probably won't use much power at idle. No sound. You have to run sound through all of them channels as if you are doing a full mix. I got a feeling the usage will at least double.
