    I have soldered u/c wires over many years, so maybe these tips may help?
    Bind the legs with 15amp fusewire.
    Always hold the iron (mine's either 60w or 90w) touching the bottom of the joint (as heat rises) and feed in the solder from the top and sides...the bottom takes care of itself!
    Use either acid cored solder or Bakers Fluid to flux the joints.
    Use cellulose thinners to clear away the flux residue from the wires.
    I hope these tips help you as much as they've helped me!

    I use a micro torch for this type of soldering.
