I remember building this boat a little bigger though when I was 11 on my own, now I'm 18. I remember when this video came out. Good times now I'm going to build a 28' can't wait. Going to take time
Small world! I woke up wanting to learn how to make artisan bread, came across these people. going to bed I wanted to learn how to make a boat... CAME ACROSS THEM AGAIN! They're too awesome. Thanks!
I made one of these a few years back with my nephew who was getting into scouts at the time. Made him do the majority of the work and at the end he got a boat out of it. Great project. Your video is the design we made. Long past due but thank you
If you angle the sides outward a bit, (about 15-20 degrees) it creates what is called reserve buoyancy, which slows the tipping or rolling effect and helps to steady the craft. Also if you want it to last a few years then use exterior or marine plywood, and a marine caulking called "5200" (its truly waterproof, and creates a permanent bond).
That's the simplest and easiest boat I've ever seen. That's so great. Anyone could make that. I'd make one a little larger and maybe put some cross support. It might make a good rowboat if you could get some oars on it too.
Nice! I was thinking of making Two of these and hooking them together. Kind of like an out-rigger. And then you can have two people. Also I was thinking of making one just slightly smaller so it will fit inside the other one for transport in the back of my truck. Have some easy clamp system (or something) to hook them together in the water. Yes... going to try this. haha
Wow!!! I am super excited about building this with my son!!! We are super fortunate to have a one acre pond on our property and this would just make my son's summer to have one of these! I love how basic it is, lol sometimes simple is just better! I'll have to send you a picture after we finish ours! Thanks for the great idea to do while we are in quarantine! It's great ideas like these that can keep everyone busy and happy! Plus loads of fun to come! Thanks again! Awesome channel, new sub! I'm already really excited to build this boat, the hoop house--awesome idea with the vents!!---and the cold frames! So grateful for finding your channel when I did, keep the great ideas coming!!! 🤗
When I was about 12, (56 years ago) I designed and made a boat using this method. I sold my bicycle (without telling my folks) to get enough money to buy the plywood. I bought 3/8" ply which was not ideal for strength but it meant that it was light enough for me to carry the boat, (on my back, like the shell of a tortoise) to the canal near our house. I strengthened the joins with batons as you have. I made a paddle from scrap ply. I did use the boat at least once but I have no memory of what happened to it after that. I bet my folks took it away to save me from drowning! This video really reminded me of my own project, thanks!
I made a version of this Boat which is bigger(2 sheets) and at first i added a v bottom because it was made for the ocean waves but they didnt last and made me casize 5 times in 10 minutes and now i cut off the v bottom and it works THANKS GARDENFORK
The clear silicone is stronger, any coloured silicone has pigment added and this weakens it by as much as 50% if I can remember, little yellow house guy used clear but did not mention this. Timber max express I have tested wet as well as dry and found it superior to guerilla glue. I hope this helps someone. Always good to see practical people, enjoyed your vid dude.
Built one similar, one sheet Dory shape, stepped in the first time and sunk😁then I learned to get in by using the oars, made of left over 2x2s as crutches sit down and push off the beach facing the stern. It was so light and easy to row I went for miles and never swamped from other boat wakes.Sealed it with some glue my Dad had in a 5gallon bucket. Used galvanized sheet rock nails and finished the rails off by ripping a grove in a dowel. I like yours cause you don't have to bend anything 👍
Bobby B I concur with G-Fork! And you're right, it is a fun build. I made one this weekend with my daughters and is easily transported in my pickup truck's bed
Thank you very much, for this video. I have been looking for homemade pontoon boat plans. You have just given me an idea for the pontoons. I will make two of these and build a frame to connect them and build a deck on top. Fill them with foam insulation sheets cut to size and it should be unsinkable.
I just built one of these this weekend with my daughters. It was a fun project to be sure, but the boat was definitely a bit wobbly in the water. Maybe my size had something to do with it: I'm 6' and 240 lbs. and until I got my bearings it rocked violently from side to side. I'd recommend a second sheet of plywood and make the bottom 3' wide. I think it would provide a little bit more stability. Still it kept me afloat and didn't leak. I made a few changes though: I used waterproof Gorilla Glue instead of silicone caulk but also painted all the joints (and the entire bottom of the boat) with asphalt cement. A gallon was $11 and I figured if it was good enough to stop roof leaks it ought to keep the boat leak-free. Seems to have worked. Then I painted the entire boat with 3 coats of paint. I also added trim and two seats, all of which apparently greatly increased the weight of this boat. Hmmm. Now that I think of it, maybe it was the seats -- and not my size weight -- that raised my center of gravity and made the whole thing wobbly. Will have to try it kneeling like you are. But one thing's for sure, the thing ain't lightweight! Now I just need to get a real paddle! Thanks for the fun inspiration!
hi everyone ,if anyone else trying to find out motor boats plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my mate got great results with it.
My first boat was a one sheet contraption I built when I was 16. Donated it to the local boy's club when I went in the Navy. Don't know what ever happened to it but I understand they made a boat building class out of correcting all my mistakes. Caught a whole lot of bluegill the last couple of years of high school with that little boat.
My Dad built a 30" Herreshoff Catch Sail Boat in our front yard....Solid Mahogany slept 6 and sailed all over the New England ports.....So I know a little about this stuff...your project made me Chuckle, thanks...Btw it took 16 years because he refused most help....Launched in 1980 and still afloat...(new owner).
Love it, Nice job. I will be copying this. I won't use plywood since it is too heavy for me. There are other materials that can work great. Thanks for posting this. I will check out your site to see what other one I might like...
2 year old "Red Eye" yellow 12' 2 sails on fb marketplace. 850$ trolling motor and battery on newly planked trailer! My brother followed youtub and came out with a sturdy fun sailboat. The trailer and accessories are worth that.
when i first saw the video i was going to call you out for stealing the idea from tiny yellow house but turns out your a genuine guy and gave him a shout good to know theres still trustworthy people on youtube
I know this video is old but, I would suggest aquarium sealer. A little more expensive, but intended to make something hold water. Therefore, more likely to hold out water. Also if you made this from two sheets, using one as the bottom, it would be more stable on the water. This plan makes a nice, simple boat but, it's more like a variation of a canoe. Making it wider would be more like a flat bottom boat.
40 bucks plus the extra for some sealant, screws/nails and waterproofing paint/lacquer that would amalgamate into a freaking boat doesn't sound like a bad deal 😂
I may try this project for my kids (with life jackets, of course). I guess the plywood doesn't warp? I built an outdoor container out of 2x4's and pressure treated plywood for my trash cans and had bad warping. Did not paint it - I treated it with Thompsons water seal - that didnt really help. That was my first project, about 5 years ago.
Hi John, the plywood will degrade over time. Go look up using Titebond III glue as a wood waterproofer, you roll it on with a roller, a few coats. I will make a vid about it this spring. - Eric.
i'm thinking of a improved design with sides that are angled outward at the top and the bow comes together at a point. i've read this will help with stability. something to work on in the winter that's already here. thx!
Yousif Shamoun I was 12 and built this, but I'm planning to build a bigger one with 2 sheets of ply wood because the single sheet is quite unstable to be honest.
Seems like an easy build. A beefed up variation could be making it twice as long and a foot deeper then put a small cabin in the back. Then double rear transom plywood to hold a small 2 to 4hp outboard or electric motor.

I then added a boat seat and a 30lb minn Kota motor to the transom. It moves the boat at about 5mph and still floats. Not sure how to load pictures to the comments.
Fun build for a quick boat project. Just remember the most important part of a project like this - wear a LIFE JACKET when you take it out cause you're gonna get wet 😎
I can't believe I actually made a boat that floats haha. I got one of those electric little boat motors for it too, I was just missing a proper seat but I just put a backrest inbetween the part where I'm sitting and the motor, I was afraid if I got an actual seat the center of gravity would be too high but it's fine :) I just did this for fun and never expected it to float lol
I have a boat exactly this design made from a sheet of galvinised steel.. it is very stable. 4 people can get in it or 2 people and all their gear, eskis and spare beer , axes, rifles , you name it. basicaly anything that will fit in the space.

This looks a very good starting point for me. I've never made anything out of plywood, thank you.

That’s a sick f150!
Looks like something that i would trust fishing close to shore. Can already do that on shore.🙂 live the vid.
Thanks 👍 eric.
So it held you both. I'm impressed. :) Looks like a fun build and a small enough boat that I can fit it in my little truck bed.
Bobby B its not the most steady wood boat, but fun to build! eric.
Bobby B I concur with G-Fork! And you're right, it is a fun build. I made one this weekend with my daughters and is easily transported in my pickup truck's bed

GhoulishCop glad you built it, but yes, its a bit wobbly. i sit or kneel in it. I am researching making a plywood canoe next. thanks! eric.
Great idea. Now i want to build one 2.
very nice that looked like a lot of fun
Well, im gonna make a boat this weekend. Thank you :)
I'm definitely going to build one we have a nice creek we can test it out on the kids would love it thanks
great. its not the most stable boat, but its a good project to learn a few skills. be sure to wear personal flotation gear. thx!
... and if that's too complicated, just throw the sheet in the water and lie down on it.
hi everyone ,if anyone else trying to find out motor boats plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my mate got great results with it.

Now THAT looked like fun... and a cool project to boot. To quote Chief Brody "You're gonna need a bigger boat"... :-)
Allotment Grow How Yes, i remember that! This is not the biggest plywood boat, but its great fun. thx, eric.
Wow, Eric! I wanted to run right out and build one of these. I'll never be stranded on a desert island again!
"angle thing" aka speed square. Boat looks good. I want one.

Nice job Eric,,, Now you can be on Deadliest Catch next season Bahahaha Love the boat .
+gbpackerfan065 thx, working on a new one for this spring, eric.
I think using 2 sheets of ply you could make a stable boat..this one is very narrow. Great job.
Awesome! I got a medium size pond near me and I’m gonna use this or a larger design for it

awesome, something I would try myself!
Wow, I remember this vedio was posted before 2014 because in 2014 I built a boat based on this video wow
That's a pretty amazing my friend 🤗🤗🤗
i have been reading more about plywood boats, hope to build a new one this spring. thx!
Great job.😄😄😄😄🌷🌷🌷❤️👌👌👌👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
NICE BOAT...
Love your dog.
NICE VIDEO.......
FYI, that plywood is now 40 bucks per sheet.
Still cheap to get on the water
90 in Canada 😢😢
it's like R600 a sheet where I live
Which is decent for making furniture, but for one boat it's the cheapest opstion possible
4x8 3/8 plywood is 22$ at home depot 🇨🇦
40 bucks plus the extra for some sealant, screws/nails and waterproofing paint/lacquer that would amalgamate into a freaking boat doesn't sound like a bad deal 😂
that is a nice boat
saludos desde mexico good video
I like it a lot 😁👍🏼

Pretty cool. I'd put some fiberglass on the outside edges for waterproofing.
Cool dog!
I love it
Good idea
Your boat is nice build your to be a good day at school
Use fiberglass matting and resen for the out side and finish it with gel coat
I am subscribed!!! канал Грабли !!!
Great video! You inspired me to make a similar boat out of 1/4 inch plywood with a 1 by 2 frame, making it very light. I used Gorilla Glue brand construction adhesive to join the wood and seal it. I then added a boat seat and a 30lb minn Kota motor to the transom. It moves the boat at about 5mph and still floats. Not sure how to load pictures to the comments.
could you send me pictures? eric@gardenfork.tv thx!
Still have the boat?
cool project, great video
***** its a perfect weekend DIY project, kids will like it! eric.
To make a bigger boat, build 2 of these as a pair of pontoons. Use marine plywood and seal the wood.
Fun build for a quick boat project. Just remember the most important part of a project like this - wear a LIFE JACKET when you take it out cause you're gonna get wet 😎
I can't believe I actually made a boat that floats haha. cool video dude!
nice!
Ficou toop o bote !
Imagine the cruise ship you could have with 2 sheets of ply..
+Jon New exactly! thinking that if the plywood boat was a bit wider, it would be a lot more stable. thx! eric.
I have a boat exactly this design made from a sheet of galvinised steel.. it is very stable. 4 people can get in it or 2 people and all their gear, eskis and spare beer , axes, rifles , you name it. basicaly anything that will fit in the space.
Built one out of toothpicks and honey cone
Whittled one before
Made one out of waffles and pancakes
Im going to make this this weekend but can i use regular plywood and not treated
Great boat. How much do you weigh?
love the dog:)
