It's so ironic that by trying to fulfill the Oath, the sons of Feanor lost the right to the Silmarills. Had they focused entirely on fighting against Morgoth and never commited all those vile acts against their own kin, the Valar probably would have given the Silmarills back to them.

Not all antiheroes are foul and ugly. Some are like Feanor, handsome and tragically flawed and consumed by hubris. Desire for revenge can consume a righteous soul and destroy it. A lesson we should all take to heart.

It's weird that Feanor was that unpleasant, and it had nothing to do with Morgoth's corruption. He was already bitter, resentful and paranoid even before Melkor was released. Melkor simply took advantage of it.

I would not call Feänor anti-hero. In my opinion he represents the original Greco-Roman concept of hero being "One that does great deeds" and not necessarily good guy of modern definition.
When you put him among heroes like Achilles, Heracles, Oedipus or Orestes, you will find that rashness, hubris and wrath are some of more common themes.

A vaguely-worded oath swearing to recover and protect the greatest work of craftmanship and beauty in Arda left countless innocents dead and relegated Feanor to being one of the greatest villains in Arda's history, on par with Sauron and Ar-Pharazon. Tragically ironic.

    • @Brandon-a-writer

I think of all the kinslayings the last is the worst, and most pathetic - even with the argument of Maeglor and Maedhros on whether or not they could break the oath, as they held Manwe in witness and swore on the name of Eru Illuvatar - the third kinslaying and subsequent death(s) is the most heartbreaking. Maglor and Maedhros were the most decent of the sons of Feanor, and yet … Good men and women can do horrible, horrible things with the right (or wrong) motivation.
they all misunderstood that the light of Aman, that of the trees, was not something that could be owned. No more could Morgoth take the flame imperishable could Feanor take the light of the trees. The parallels between Melkor and Feanor and their subsequent falls are very striking.
An interesting series for us to do would be on oaths, curses and prophecies in Tolkien! There are numerous good examples which would make for interesting video topics for us to explore here at TBS! :)
Thank you for watching and commenting. It is always a very daunting task to try to convey everything without being laborious, be as in depth as possible without taking away a potential new reader's chance to enjoy the material if they have not had chance to read it. We try to do our best to balance this, between information and explanation with deciding what to cut, which is always difficult with Tolkien because of how interconnected all his work is.

Wouldn’t mind a video exploring why Feanor was never rivalled in skill. Elves are immortal and most stayed in Vallinor instead of following Feanor, where they could continue to grow in knowledge and skill from the teachings of the Valar. Why did none of them ever come to rival one hot head who died after only living a few thousand years?

As much hate as Feanor gets for all the evil deeds he committed, and in general for his whole character, you gotta give the dude some credit. He was literally the absolute peak of Elvish existance, the best Elf there could ever be in the entire history of the world. The fact it got to his head and made him arrogant is nothing weird. Lesser people get arrogant even when they're just very slightly exceptional, while Feanor was so far ahead of even his own kin in every regard, he might as well be entirely different species. And when it comes to Silmarils, it's pretty much the same situation as with Sauron and the Ring. He poured so much of himself into them, he could've never repeated that again, just like Sauron could never make another ring. Silmarils basically contained part of his very essence, hence why he desired them so.

I have always believed that the blue Silmaril has never been launched into the ocean but is hidden in a secret place. I say that because the heart of the ocean was launched on Titanic by the heroine and everybody in the depth see their souls liberated.

      @@KatarzynaMatylla Yeah you're right, I misunderstood.
But I think it was an error from Fëanor to give birth to seven sons.
The better would have made three sons (one for each silmarils), and four girls for an alliance with other big houses and to make a second vague of children warriors very quickly for an attack from Valinor toward middle earth.
And if he weren't so faithful with is a wife he would have so much more boys and girls with is potancial
What if Fëanor never brings war to middle earth how the elves never see the light of Valinor, and the human should have resistance to the power of Morgoth.
I think Fëanor thought the war will be quick and he wanted to take Morgoth by surprise. An echec.
There is many ways Fëanor should have been better.
Tolkien was optimistically thinking a war can be won in 6000 years.
And I think that with so many errors in strategy, I bet the winning over Morgoth would never occure if we make a simulation.
Fëanor should have never betrayed his two brothers. And lost all the power of two allies with their armies.
He commits suicide by burning the boat letting is a position with not a rear appovisionnement of material, food and elves.
Under the command of Fëanor the allies elves; human dwarfs would have defended Gondolin and Doriath successfully and avoided many tragedies, Oh I love Tragedy and I will let the path of Turin Turambar and Beren and Luthien occurs. But this time they will take three of them and not only one.
He should have never brought war to aqualonde, cause all he needed was a passage. He should have given them bows and arrows to make them an army of archers. As a gage of peace, cause these weapons can be used to fight Morgoth either as the Noldor.
This army can find back other troopers in Valinor from time to time with little amount of mariners.
If you look closely all the silmarils find their places, one a sun in the center of the earth (a sun), one in the Ocean, and One in the sky.
I think Fëanor with a view on the past can ruin Morgoth Bauglir in 1000 years and I will prove my point cause I will reset the game in time.
Cause if we lose the Matrix will stay forever. But I will develop this thing later cause it is complex a subject.

Never cared for the character of Feanor.... To me he was a arrogant, smug, short sighted, self-absorbed hot Head.... Yeah he was intelligent in his own way and with his crafting but other than that no.... I do empathize with him in regards to his father being murdered and his most prized possessions being stolen I don't feel he was unjust in declaring his oath where he was wrong was going full tilt even against his own countryman..... Of course his Spirit was an extraordinary fiery spirit so much so that it literally drained his mother completely to the point that she was despondent and languished and even the Valar couldn't save her....Finwe was guilty of not putting more energy into his son, his son had all that talent and intelligence and fire and had his father been able to teach him to control that and use it he very well could have possibly got the Silmarils back.... But this is what happens when a man obsesses over a woman at the expense of his children and loves the woman too much then the children suffer and unfortunately this ended up leading to Feanor being an unbridled forceful chaotic spirited fiery persona..... And this was able to take him very far however brute strength and brute Force and brute power was not able to overcome something far Superior had he been able to channel all that energy and been raised properly by his father and taught constraint and discipline and focus all that fiery energy then he could have like a laser scalpel went in there and got the Silmarils back with a master plan.... But that was not the case and that was not his fate.... He was destined to be like a fiery meteor blazing through the sky until it impacts and that's what happened when he impacted with Morgoths Balrogs.... And I don't necessarily consider him a great warrior I would say he was a powerful Warrior but not great....Fingolfin on the other hand was Great as was Finrod.
My storytelling I enjoyed it thank you

True. Feanor was a conceited, entitled and kind of spoiled individual. He had all that power, skill and the love of his father (which is stated to be bigger than Finwe had for his other children), and yet he was never satisfied. He resented his step-mother and half-siblings for no legitimate reason, like he wanted his father's love all for himself. He creates the Silmarills but forgets that he only accomplished it thanks to the Valar. He expected the Teleri to follow him, and when they didn't, he stole their work (like Morgoth stole his) and killed so many of them. And when he hears whispers that criticize his obvious poor decisions, he abandons more than half of them in the ice.

Eru Iluvatar Allows this all to transpire? It must be a Benevolent god indeed! Are the Gods' playing Tiddlywinks or just taking the living P?🤫

Is Eru supposed to lock everyone into cages so they can't make bad decisions for themselves?

Feanor was quite evil. I don't even know if he had any good in him. He was quite mad even before Morgoth was rereleased into the world. He had murderous intentions toward his half-brother. He became so greedy he would not easily share his creations. The Valar gave them a paradise to live in and he wouldn't even save the two trees - even though the light from which helped for the Silmarils, and the Valar hallowed them. In essence, they helped create them. He could have put aside his greed and saved the day. The Valar would still have imprisoned Morgoth eventually - They had to not only defend the elves but also the secondborn (man). Instead, Feanor dragged a large part of his people into a that decimated them, split his people, and 2 kinslayings. Feanor really was a horrible person, and he was on a path that only Sauron and Melkor understood. Probably why he hated them so much. He left such a dark stain on the Elves that whenever an elf points out the pettiness of men (i.e. Numenor) one just has to point to the acts of Feanor. And elves had the benefit of thousands of years of life, humans only a hundred, tops. Humans look a heck of a lot better by that comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love elves. But I've learned to respect Tolkien's humans a lot more, especially after knowing of the acts of Feanor and his kin. Anyway, I guess I in someway need to thank Feanor. Without our resident Noldor jerkwad, the stories would have been less interesting ;-)
