Watched this live with my brother and dad. Just absolutely incredible to watch a man go from the back of the D main all the way to the A main. Only a true racer could pull that off.
I was a 16 year old Doug Wolfgang fan in 1990. I was discouraged when he ran into so many problems getting to Saturday night but it was the greatest night of racing of my life! Knoxville loved him at the place went nuts as he navigated the impossible. I was in Knoxville for the Nationals last weekend and they were saying the same thing about David Gravel and how it was impossible to win from the rear. I told the guy next to me about this race and how untrue that statement was. 50 laps later he finished 2nd and might have won if he had a couple more.
That was his 2nd time trying to do it, I think his 1st. time was in 1987 and he started in the E main and went clear to the A main and was up to 6th (fastest car there) with about 5-8 laps left and had a flat tire. During the B main the Sheriff had his speedometer deal and Wolfgang was going into number 3 corner flat footed on the gas 131 mph and never lifted. 1987 was my last year working on a Sprint Car there.👍
Greg Hodnet was cheated out of being Rookie Off The 1990 Nationals. They gave it to Joey Kuhn who didn't even make the A-main. They should correct this for Greg's HOF record posthumously!

Doug was definitely a stand up one of a kind Gentleman. His skills as a driver & mechanic were 2nd to none.
What a treat stepping back in time for this race. The fans got their money's worth on that night.
Wow, I'm so glad I found this youtube vid. I was at that race, sitting in the stands. That was one of the greatest Three days in my life. Thank you.
THOSE WERE AMAZING DAYS IN THE SPRINT CAR RACING HISTORY.

There is Magic in the Dirt at Knoxville every night thanks to the Family that takes care of it!
What a run by Wolfgang!
I grew up watching the trinity. And a little later, got our asses handed to us by them. What a beautiful time in our sport with these legends
