I know when I go spending $10k+ for my corporate events, I'm not looking for a dude with a small PA and lights. I'm looking for someone that can facilitate a production at scale that provides the atmosphere and logistical delivery we need to have a successful event. This is great, John. Thanks for putting this together.

Awesome video. Very informative. I've known many smaller companies that have made a good living off these bad boys. They may not throw that far, but definitely can get the job done for the smaller gigs. They were the gateway to bigger things for us. And for those who don't want to get too big, they're just fine to make a good living with.

Howdy from Houston brother, I’ve been in the live sound touring and corporate business since 1987; congratulations , you have a , very clean ,organized and professional company, very well put together, better than many bigger, so called “professional” companies out there, I liked in particular the cable management behind the amp rack, that’s how I do it, keep up the good work and have a productive 2019

Just fell over your video by coincidence. I really appreciate your honesty and clear view on the business and your position in it. Keep on, man!
But would advise you the LabGruppen PLM 20000 as a 2in4 Dolby Lake Processing amp which replaces your whole amp city by one piece. Guess what: I sell 4 of them. ;)
But indeed, Check the used market. Light weighted and an investment for the next 20years.
Go ahead, best wishes from a brother from Germany.

Hey John, just wanted to say when rigging your PA try not to rig the slings in a manor that pulls the truss apart (hoist sling on top bar, PA sling on bottom). This weakens the truss. The PA sling should be choked on the top bar and the hoist sling choked on the bottom.

I let them Know, That almost Cover the cost of my Snakes(copper) Sub Snakes , Mic Cables... They Look at me Like I am LYING to them .. Then They Show Me Pictures of the PEAVEY System they are Running at 2 Ohms . So they can Get all of the Power out of it they can . But Keep Blowing Up speakers and amps ...

Hi John! Thank you! That's a really helpful and informative video. We deal in very high-end self-powered audio systems and at the end of your video I decided to look up what we could do for about $64,418.00. I was amazed! 8 x SSP218 + 6 x AT212 + 4 x custom carts plus covers for everything. 32,000W of subwoofer amps and 18,000W of tops amps, including all DSP and the price came to $64,580.00. BASSBOSS will be linking to your video to demonstrate the outstanding value we provide! Thank you again!!!

I used to have a few vrxs for side fill and the Event 208s blown them out of the water. That 6th speaker in your array has a purpose. Look into the research and developments of Don B. Keele. By attenuating the speakers along the curve you can almost ignore the inverse square law and fill a space with the same volume of sound at all corners.

Within the first like 30 seconds you absolutely hit it...you can definitely get good results with the minimum if you know what you want and at least kind of know what you're doing. It takes numerous years to get there...and when you think you have a handle on the concepts, everything you took as fact gets flipped turned upside down within an instant! You gotta constantly look for that 1up.

Like your humbleness, great video. One observation, never hang anything heavy from the bottom chords of the truss. That puts the weld joints of the webs under stress. The truss is designed to be supported or hung from the bottom chords, and anything heavy hanging is supported by the top chords.

Watching this video again three years on, and this still holds true...it costs A LOT. I'm a much smaller outfit and so far my business has cost me £12K over the last year in gear (which I guess is about $16K); and I'm nowhere close to this kind of setup. I'd cater for an indoor event of up to around 300-350 with what I have right now, and would think twice of taking on outdoor events at all.

Thanks for that, I'm designing a small rig 3600 watts (1800 stereo) to do bush duff's and local markets in Australia (Big Crowd 200) using no name brands I can do it for $0.19 USD/Watt but once you jump to 16,500 watts in the big event game your in you have to pay $3.79 USD per watt that's mind blowing! I subscribed and look forward to future videos.

I run 4 EV T252+ tops.....4 EV MTL-1X subs. ...with 4 EV Q1212 amps and the DBX PA2. Love it. I bought some of it new and some of it used. 4 tops..4 subs..4 amps..and xover ran me $6,600
Add in another 4K for cabling and road cases as well.
Then another 4/5K for a good mixer laptops disk players and signal sources , plus back up gear.
Don't forget about transportation for all that gear.
    Shit starts adding up quick.

The Cost of a Rider Friendly System is around $ 225,000.00 including the Truck .... The Prices are Based off of MAP Pricing for All of the Equipment and The Truck is Based off of what a 2018 Isuzu NQR with a 20 foot Box and Lift gate would be . This system is Based off of what I have and Use . Mine is a Little bit more because I carry 80 Mics with my System . All Mic Stands are K&M . They Last . All Copper Cables were Priced through , www.Audiopile.net as were all the Cases ... I do Around 250 to 300 events a year .. They Pay between $ 1250.00 to $ 3500.00 a Night .

It's sometimes good to mix other brands together. My Ex Girlfriends Father used to work for Jensen Audio, then he went to work for Blaupunkt Audio, but he used to tell me that you can blow a speaker by not having enough power than you would having too much power, because distortion is what blows your speakers, and he's mixed brands and gotten a great sound. He also sold Advent speakers, which I'm sure you've heard of Advent, he had Advent speakers throughout his entire house, both his daughters had Advent Speakers in their bedrooms, he had them in his family room and living room, which the one's in his living room didn't start clipping until 1000 watts each speaker, and he had a Phase Linear amp powering that system, and that thing would vibrate pictures off the walls! Lol. But people who tell you that you are wrong or an experience because you have different pieces of equipment, then clearly they are the ones who are inexperienced and don't know what they're doing oh, because you can get really good sounds by mixing different equipment, it's been proven! I had different brand audio equipment in my cars, and I had cars get thumped, and everything was mixed just right, I had crisp highs, good mids and good lows, I kept everything balanced, because I don't like system that has nothing but Bass, that shit hurts my ears and sounds like garbage! 😎👍

Production companies are hard to do because in order to get started you almost have to start with what we all call entry level equipment but have to build your way to the higher end stuff. The thing is they are actually different client bases. Worse the knowledge level is two different worlds. Most Production Company owners realize along the way that the knowledge base to own and operate a production company is nothing close to what an audio or video engineer has. I always talk about the 10,000 hours thing and I believe that is even an understatement. Aligning your firm with the right team is key. One thing I have realized recently working on corporate events is that specifically when it comes to IT or tech firms the companies treat their staff like gold. They are highly prized and highly valued people. When you think about it you realize really quickly why. They are the gold! Without them those companies would fold instantly. They literally make their money because of the brain children of the people they have hired. I was brought up in a world where as crew we were beaten into submission and companies would regularly force us to work under conditions that would cause failure, all so they could pocket their dollars and whether they realized it or not would flush the careers of many super talented guys down the drain without a care in the world. The fact is I, like everyone didn't always know the difference either. As my experience grew I began to see it more and more and as a tech I had to fire the companies I worked for in order to grow and not because we couldn't pull the show out of the fire together but because the company would not listen to me or us. That isn't to say that they were always wrong either. The point here is how we did what we did needed to be a discussion and not dictatorially either. The focus on how to do what we did with a focus on maximum success had to be the point not how do we make more profit. Yes, we call JBL VRX speakers "Fisher Price Audio" but the reality is I have done some pretty cool shows with that stuff. I own zero and don't want to. I am an operator not a company owner. That isn't to say that nothing JBL is good either. They are huge, the biggest actually and make 3 or 4 tiers of performance levels. As a production company in a perfect world you would own them all but deployed and implemented in the right way you can still do a lot of cool things with a little bit of stuff. It is all about how you use it and the secret to better implementation is all TEAM. That is what running a company is really about. Involve your guys in the discussions right from the get go. Help them grow to become Grammy Artist tour engineers and they will help you turn your company into whatever you want it to be probably bringing you clients along the way too.

    • @MrRoberacer
      @MrRoberacer 5 лет назад

I realised reading this back that I made it sound like production company owners should kiss the feet of the techs. That isn't what I meant. Tech's need production companies just as much as production companies need techs. It is a symbiotic relationship! Each exists because of the other. On purpose the industry is run by FREELANCE techs (In Canada anyway). That free agent status allows us to walk away at any time just as our clients can ditch us at anytime. I guess the difference between being an employee and a freelancer is like being married vs BF/GF. Until you are married it is all purely an on your honor basis. In truth it should always be on your honor but we have this notion that legislation negates the need for being honorable and that is where the whole understanding of being married is like gaining a ball and chain. Choices allow us to eliminate that ball and chain mentality. Whether employees or not it is the nature of the relationship that keeps it working. The only thing to think about is that the very title of "leadership" tells you who probably should take the first step. Be verbal about your intentions too. Don't leave anyone to guess those as that creates confusion. Yes, there will be those who would choose to take advantage of your kindness. Ditch em! Keep the people who are open to working honorably. I promise you will see your company blow up and it won't take long either.

I would recommend going with crown power that way your able to control you speaker more efficiently and use the software to control your boxes.(performance manager) Crown I tech HD3500 2 of them and eliminate you crossover with the same power. Awesome job with explaining stuff. Good luck to you.
