    What a guy! I was afraid of what you'd think when you saw the NY subway, having seen the Moscow Metro. No fake, no bullshit, you showed a person sleeping on the floor of the station, and all the ugliness -- but then you found something nice to say about it, that the trains aren't as loud as in Moscow. You're giving some of the most insightful pictures of New York I've seen. I hope you keep traveling the world if you want to. And what a great dad, to give your wife and daughter the experience!

    It must be very interesting as a Russian to find a Russian community in the US. Great episode.

      Тенчо Тенчев The majority of people living in the US don't really know much of a difference and don't worry themselves about details - in their eyes everyone speaking Russian is a Russian :).

      and so jews are not russians to you. No wonder they flee russia-

    • @juliashar
      @juliashar 7 лет назад +1

      and no wonder all of my grandparents left europe- thank god.

    • @unitedwestand56
      @unitedwestand56 7 лет назад +3

      shay tuck They are not considered to be Russian. In the Soviet passport there was a place where they would write down a person's "nationality". A Jew living in the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic or the Kazah Soviet Socialist Republic, for example, was still a Jew, not a Russian or a Kazah. It was a messed up system where the definition of "nationality" is different from what you probably accustomed to. Even not a religious Jew was still a Jew, where his "Jewish nationality" was determined by his father's lineage. Your grandparents made a decision which they can't be blamed for - after all, it is difficult to be comfortable in the society where there is a strong believe that if anything bad even happens to them, it must be the Jews who caused it. I wonder if it is any different now

    • @juliashar
      @juliashar 7 лет назад

      yes and that is why the jews leave that god forsaken land when they can. My great grandfather was a jew from russia who went into poland- thats how bad it was.

    That had to be the first time in a long time I heard someone say "It's a free country" - and not from a Murican - and not in English...

    • @kelticsage
      @kelticsage 7 лет назад +17

      "free country" is just an illusion anyway, if you attempt to act on your "freedoms" you'll be shut down quick

      that's dumb bro. don't get me wrong there are a lot of issues such as a the NSA but to act as if your some oppressed person is ridiculous. especially coming from someone in a western first world country. the government is gonna shut your speech down... well unless you live in Sweden or Canada lol. The only threat to our speech currently isn't the government but rather the SJW trash that comes out of western universities. The fact that ideologies such as anarcho-capitalist and libertarians is even a concept in the west goes to show how valued freedom is in the west. we need to focus on shutting the NSA down but let's not bullshit ourselves either and act like we are being persecuted

    • @peterroberts5600
      @peterroberts5600 7 лет назад +11

      It's not dumb, but this is perhaps not obvious to anyone who has only experienced American Brand "freedom". Sure, it's a "free country" but there are a lot of things that will get you jailed or shut down here that nobody would bat an eye at in eastern Europe. The expression here is largely meaningless, but no more so than anywhere else.

      your gonna have to give examples because last time I check the government can't force you to do anything unless you break the law. maybe arguably the draft? Nor can they "shut you down for no reason" sure plenty of people get shut down. but its for breaking laws. I hope your not one of those fake libertarians that think that they have no freedom cus they can't jerk off in public.

      Bo88y Beretta The NSA not likely has anything to do with this :). The lady working in that store is probably doing so illegal and doesn't want to be caught on camera. That said, while filming is not illegal in a situation like this, it is still a nice gesture to ask permission to film.

      In America, whether or not you can film is the decision of the owner of the business. You can film in any public spaces.

    This is just the second one of your videos in the US that I have watched. I enjoyed this one just as much as the first one on Astoria. I like the fact that you are an honest reporter on what you see. You seem open to any experience, without a lot of preconceived notions getting in the way. I have to say, you were very kind to the New York City subway system, which I find pretty dirty and disgusting. I haven't had time yet, but I'm looking forward to the rest of your videos on the US. Nice job!

    for me as a tourist, metro Moscow is much prettier than NY subway.

    • @PerthTowne
      @PerthTowne 7 лет назад +5

      It's extensive, and I think it's the best way to get around New York City--aside from walking. I use the subway whenever I go to the city. But it's ain't pretty.

    • @user-oz8uf6cn6u
      @user-oz8uf6cn6u 7 лет назад +8

      The NY subway looks just functional. The architects seem not to aim beauty. Pity.

    • @benthead
      @benthead 7 лет назад +4

      The New York Metro is a sh#t hole to begin with.

    • @PerthTowne
      @PerthTowne 7 лет назад +2

      There are almost 500 stations in the system, and there is art in many of them--mostly tile mosaics that depict something about the history of the city or some event. But the main stations in Manhattan that most tourists use are pretty uninteresting. I used to work in the city, so I rode the subway all the time. On the #1 Train, they had conductors who would give a continuous talk about the history of each part of the city we rode through, give people ideas about interesting things to see at each stop. That was fun. I remember musicians playing in the subway all the time. And watching people in the subway can be extremely entertaining. You'd be surprised how many famous people who live in New York City actually ride the subway or ride the buses or are just walking around the streets. I've spotted quite a few in past years. But you're right, it's built mostly to get the 6 million people who ride it each day from Point A to Point B. Not built for beauty. :)

    • @Glorfinniel
      @Glorfinniel 5 лет назад

      I agree. You couldn't pay me to take a subway anywhere, but in Russia. Not only are their subway stations clean, but like museums with their art displays.

    Sergey, great video. I used to live in NJ and was always in New York shopping but I never visited Brighton Beach and now thanks to you I finally see what Brighton Beach is like. When filming in the U.S., you can generally film anywhere but when in a private establishment, sometimes the people get a little bent out of shape. Maybe they are afraid of being found by the police. Haha. I am so sorry that they hurt your feelings and on behalf of the rest of our citizens, I apologize.
    I hope that you get to celebrate a wonderful American Thanksgiving day here and I also hope that you get to experience a real American Thanksgiving dinner today. Keep up the great work Sergey, I guess that next I am off to the Staten Island Ferry with you. Thanks again my friend.

    I've been to all the places where you walked. Most New Yorkers don't go to Brighton Beach because it is a long trip from Manhattan. It is much colder there in winter because of the proximity to the water and the strong winds that blow off of it. If you want authentic Russian products, it's the place to go. There are incredible bargains, especially on sweets. Before Easter, there are babushkas who set up tables on the sidewalk and sell their homemade traditional Easter bread.

    • @realrussiablog
      @realrussiablog  7 лет назад

      It's great to hear such an appreciation!
      But to say honest, if I had same experience as I have now before I started this channel, I wouldn't called it using the word "real". If you only knew how many people bothered me with that word for over four years since the beginning. Damn! As soon as there something they think in their opinion is not "real", they thurst me in it. :)
      Like... you go to Moscow? But Moscow is not real Russia! Same was about New York! It's not "real" America! And more than that, no matter where I have been in the US, I also everywhere heard this is still not America. And when I've heard that even in Omaha, I said I don't give a shit to what is real or not anymore :)
      I would better call the show "Hello America" or so.

      I kind of liked it, the dated looks, green steel, wooden roof. No-nonsense I prefer that over modern 'architectural' where you are all supposed to feel so enlightened or something to that effect. A more 'natural' look. And I like to see 'real' materials like steel or wood. When a bit of dirt doesn't make it ugly then it's good architecture.

      The New York subway system was originally made up of lines owned and operated by three different companies: the IRT; the BMT; and the IND. Later the three lines were put under one administration and ownership. That may add to the confusion. The Moscow
      Metro is by contrast more rational, but it dates from the 1930's, whereas the NYC subway is much older and it shows. Old timers (such as myself) still refers to the IRT, BMT, and IND trains.

    Your comment in regards to "Taste of Russia" eatery. In the USA private operated businesses do have the right to set certain rules for example no use of cameras while inside. But outside on the sidewalk (public domain) you can use a camera all you want to record the front of the store since they are exposing that part of their business to the public.

    I've found (in my fairly high level of international travel ) that the US is generally tolerant of photography. Russia was pretty good also. London on the other hand is awful - I was asked to leave a train station for taking photos. A subway performer ran after me being very belligerent. Also in Germany. So the US is at the top of (my) list for photo friendly IMHO.

If they say something to you then I would let them know I didn't see any signs and that you would like to give them free positive mention of their business and do not want to make it negative. in Russia... in theory the law is even more liberal than in the US. Even if it's your property but the property given for commercial activity where public is allowed, then you may film.
      Why? Because the law consider filming as source of getting an information which is protected by Constitution.
      From the point of view of Russian law... to film in the property doesn't mean to occupy that. Technically, it's same as if somebody will complain for you just watching the stuff in the store. When you film, you don't even touch.
      BUT... in practice I don't know why in Russia people are so afraid of cameras. And usually you have a problem explain anything to the security guard. Because for ordinary security guard the "law" of employer who pays him actual money is way higher than Constituion or other Law. :)

    Sergey, you are providing the deepest look into the real USA! I've never been to NYC, and never knew there was such a nice looking beach there. I knew about Coney Island, but didn't realize there was such a nice beach at Brighton. And the picture of the beach, with the city in the background, is a completely new image of New York to me. I never knew! This is why sometimes it takes a foreigner to "see" things we never notice about ourselves. So glad you came to visit.

    Sergey. I think those DVD's that you saw in front of that store are sold as "used", with some "pirated" as well. Notice also that there's a sign offering vinyl records. They are becoming popular in the US again.
    We are subscribers of 'Netflix' and we get 3 movie DVD's every week. They are still popular in the US.

      And now some companies are producing new turntables too.
      I have more than 200 vinyl records. Most of them Classical music that I inherited from my parents when they died. They are a treasure and still in good condition.
      I hope you could stay more time in the US and see more wonders.

    • @realrussiablog
      @realrussiablog  7 лет назад +3

      in Russia... in theory the law is even more liberal than that.

    From personal experience, grocery stores do not like you filming because they think you might be their competition. If you were a competing store you could get knowledge of their inventory and undercut the prices to drive them out of business. I have been yelled at for this at a Wegman's before. Sorry you had that experience.

    • @xNemesiSxPR
      @xNemesiSxPR 7 лет назад +5

      well that seem like bullshit, i mean anyone can enter the store and take notes of the prices, dont need a camera for that. Sure with a camera is easier but still can be done by anyone just checking in like a "normal" customer.

    When you are out in the street , that is considered public property and thus you are free to record. When you go into a particular store, that is considered private property and the owners may ask you not to record. If you ask the owners or the workers for permission to record, they may say yes. Better to ask if it's Ok to record when you go into a place.IMO

    Enjoying your videos. As you go from different parts of the US you will see how each area is unique and different. Furthermore, all New York City residents are not the way some people have commented about them. Many of them are friendly and hospitable. They are just driven and focused. Of course, as you get out of the cities to the towns and smaller areas the people are totally different.
    Sergey, you will also have a lot of people on who hear who don't like the US. Therefore, their comments will be negative.
    I've traveled the world and the US is still one of the greatest places to live.

      There are borderline homeless but it's very rare. Parents almost never kick out their kids no matter how they get old. And even rent and mortgage itself doesn't really exist in Russia. It's more like you either own the apartment or house or not. At least that's what my Russian friends told me.

    Filming in public spaces is a little different from private spaces. A store is considered private property, much like a house, and sometimes store managers don't want people filming. Unlike most of America, people in New York tend to be assholes, so hopefully they weren't too mean about it.
