  • The Once Disused Great Western Railway Now a Narrow Gauge Railway
In this video we have a trip to the Bala Lake Railway / Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid ‪@rheilfforddllyntegid-balalake‬ in North Wales. Running for 4.5 miles down the shore of the Lake Bala, this railway line was once the Great Western Railway route between Ruabon, Llangollen, Bala, Dolgellau and Barmouth on the coast. It closed in 1965 under the Beeching Cuts.
The track was ripped up the route abandoned, but later found a new lease of life as a narrow gauge railway serving tourists.
The main base of the railway and our starting point for todays trip is at Llanuwchllyn. The original station buildings and signal box still remain from the old GWR days. Some of the features lovingly cared for. There is the original working GWR signalbox that has been in place here since 1896.
Also at Llanuwchllyn is the engine shed and yard, and if you venture to the far end of the station site, you will find the heritage centre where you’ll find more locomotives and artifacts from the slate mining industry.
The railway boasts a historic collection of former industrial steam engines, mainly from the vast slate quarries of north Wales. Our train for today - Hunslet loco No.3 Holy War - spent it's working life at the Dinorwic Slate Quarry near Llanberis.

A very interesting video today. Always enjoy them. Sadly, I may never get back to the UK to actually see them, so these videos replace that possibility. Thank you Paul for today’s travel over there! Cheers Paul! ❤😊

Enjoyed that… it’s been decades since I last travelled on the Bala line and much has changed for the better.
I do hope they get permission for the extension, I heard they got knocked back but have not been deterred.

I agree. Will be great if they can get the extention done. It does feel as though they're not welcome though 😕

      Cheers Russ.
I always say, if I could go back I'd love to travel this line to Barmouth.
If it was still open it would have meant we wouldn't have to go through Birmingham to go on holiday.
Ps. Down to one crutch now 😀
