I love Denise so much. Cooper's reaction is how everyone should react, he's the moral compass, while Hawk and Truman are uncomfortable but that's also realistic for the times, it would've been more weird if they all were immediately accepting. I think her character is very well written and Duchovny seems to take the role seriously. It seems like it was one of the first positive portrayals of trans people. It's not perfect but the heart was in the right place.
Cooper immediately says 'ok' and switches to the name 'Denise' as if nothing happened. This isn't a new idea, it's called respect. I'm an atheist and I still refer to priests as 'father', because I respect people and their identities. In our supposedly inclusive society of today, nothing is more firm and to the point than this scene.
That "ok" is probably one of the more significant moments in television history. The way Lynch approaches this subject is stellar. Anybody who disagrees needs to fix their hearts or die.
How lovely is it to see a trans character who's treated with respect by the characters and writers, who isn't trans for dramatic, or worse, "comedic" reasons, at the expense of transpeople. Especially in the *90s*. Thank you, David. (Doesn't hurt that Denise is a bad-ass too)

My favorite part of this is dale just says “okay” and moves on, he still values her work and sees her as an equal regardless of her identity. Immediately off the bat Denise enters the show and is smart and witty and strong and I love that

I"m almost 70 and am losing what intellect I have, and instinctual pronouns are based on my brain not my ability to be transmuting my reflexive use of words. Like sayin holy shit when I bang my head AS OFTEN AS I DO. I have a close first cousin that decided to be trans at age 54 and then have a full operation. I have not yet mastered the art of forgetting what I say and do avoid conversation, knowing I may likely slip a him in public slip and be corrected. One on one is so much easier 'you' is always correct so far. The VA has posters all over now forbidding the use of Mister etc.. I am glad I am on the down side 1/3 of what the future is. So much implied behavior abnorms. How one reacts, is a reality. how one speaks, is a choice, how one behaves is no longer a right.

We always want to say the right thing but the reflex and repetitiveness of saying something can cause us to say things we don't want to. I often say holy shit when watching something new and exciting myself, yet I want to expand my vocabulary and use other expletive's.
