Amazing! Thank you for this helpful video. I've been chasing a squeak on the front of my LS3 for months. I thought it was a pulley bearing until I found this video. Problem solved!
I did this test only to have my belt completely stall. It also stalls if I drive over a puddle. Would it still be the tensioner? It began doing this after a deer hit the side of my car that the serpentine belt is on.
@TheBrechols thanks for the comment. Our product engineer came up with several potential issues, including a worn tensioner, a belt that may not be the correct size for your Taurus, or an alignment issue. Without the vehicle in front of us unfortunately we can't offer a thorough diagnosis. Perhaps sharing this information with your mechanic will help. We have a forum where you can get technical questions answered as well. It's at GatesGAS.com.
how to find battery drain, how to fix suspension parts, how to balance tires, how to change brake/fuel lines, how to change brakes front and back, how to diagnose electrical problems, change spark plugs, spark plug wires, engine oil, transmission oil, how to bleed brakes, there are a lot more, even though I already know how to do pretty much all of that, those videos would help people that don't know what their doing.
is there a wrong way to put on a serpentine belt? what i mean is there an arrow on the belt to show which way it goes on? if so how to tell which way it goes after the arrow is faded and missing.? thanks for reading. hope to hear from you soon. john.
hi my belt is making a whining noise and it gets louder after turning AC on. if I spray water, it starts to squeal for a few seconds then keep whining. I'm pretty sure the tension is tight enough. any ideas? pls :(
Hey! that video was really informative. although Im having a really bad sliping belt noise inside the engine bay everytime i slow down when the car is already in operating temp. it will only stop squeaking if the car gets in a completely stop position. i just replaced all my drive belts as well as my timing belt on my 1992 Nissan Pathfinder 3L v6. I replaced my drive belts because it started making a sliping noise. the noise stopped for a week or so after replacing the belts but came back after that. I tried tightening all the belts again and it still does it, how could i know if its a bad pulley/bearing/or pump? the Pathfinder will be off road this week and I dont want any belts or pump be seized while off road. thanks in advance :)
Christian, Thanks for contacting Gates. It sounds like more diagnosis isneeded. Please contact our team of ASE Master Certified Techs at (303) 744-5651 or apateam@gates.com so that we may assist you further. Thanks and have a great day!
just because your belt squealing gets louder when you spray doesn't mean you need to replace the belt and the tensioner. If you just replaced your belts or had them replaced, it could be that they just weren't tensioned properly.
Thanks for your comment, @jonathondio1234. We only use real technicians in our videos, but it may be hard to tell given how "cleaned up" they are during the filming. We'll look into having them be more hands on in the repair process. Are there any topics you'd like us to cover in future videos?
my 2006 ford tauras squeals like crazy! Everytime i go over a puddle of water or it rains, my car starts to squeals for weeks. When water splashes underneath the car it stops for a sec then squeals again so loudly i can hear it from inside the car. The repair guy said my belt is good, just some cars do that. Dont believe it! Its too loud and embarrasing to drive. Got any advice?
Based on information you provided, it appears one or more of the pulleys by the fire wall is (are) misaligned. Gates makes a laser alignment tool to properly identify the area of misalignment. As little as one degree (about half a rib width) can emit a noise - the shorter belt spans are more critical. You can also use our new iPhone PIC Gauge app to diagnose your belt's wear. Search the iTunes store for PIC Gauge. If you need more info you can post a question on our forum @ gatesgas.com.
Good question. Our Europe team can help you out. Visit the Gates website, select "Gates Worldwide" in the top left corner, and select Europe as the country. From there you'll be able to contact the Europe team regarding this and other questions.
Thanks for the kind words. It appears the spray bottle test would be perfect for your situation. However, if you would like some advice from ASE-certified technicians we encourage you to post your question on the Gates Forum. Check it out at GatesGAS(dot)com.
This is the only video I've see that explains the difference between belt "slip" and belt "chirp". Thank God for Gates

Isn't the whole point of a belt tensioner to do that on its own? Video was super helpful for me and I'm looking forward to fixing my squeak soon!
Brendan Kruse yeah that's like buying a new belt for your pants just because you put it on too loose.
Wilkens Photo no, not all vehicles have auto tensioners.

What size belt do you need for 77mm pulley Mercedes AMG
Excellent ideas. Thank you very much.
What if the sound goes away for about 5 seconds then comes back louder?
