    • iPod Mini 64gb upgrade...
    FYI, this video was made a long time ago, 2013. The iTunes version back then was 11.0.3. You will probably need an old version to make these iPods work with flash memory upgrades.

    DO NOT use METAL tools on soft plastic and aluminium, folks. There's a reason pry tools are made of plastic... IT WON'T SCRATCH OR GOUGE THE MATERIALS. Use a credit card to prop the iPod open, NOT a screwdriver head.

    OK, so, your two iPod Minis had Seagate and Toshiba hard drives, and my 1st gen has a Hitachi... Why couldn't Apple stick to one company? Also, I found that my hard drive seemed to be rusty when I removed it from my iPod. Nothing else was "rusty", but some of the "rust" got onto the back of the inside of the iPod, and there was "rust" on the rubber bumper on the HDD. The "rust" probably came from the HDD itself, as I see no other logical explanation for it.

    Hello Gary, thank you for the video. I followed these directions with my iPod Mini (not sure if it's 1st or 2nd gen). I used the same CF card as you. What I got when I first plugged into iTunes was a bit different though. I did not get a message that the iPod was corrupted but rather I got a message that it was in the middle of a restore. I still got the option to restore and I selected that. The restore went quickly but at the end the iPod did not reboot. Rather I was told to disconnect it from the computer and connect it to it's power source to finish the restore. When I connected it to the power source I got the Apple logo and a progress bar moving across the bottom of the screen. A few seconds later I got the language selection screen. I selected my language, unplugged it from power and plugged it back into my Win 7 PC. At this time Windows asks if I want to fix the drive and iTunes doesn't see the iPod. Windows can see the iPod but can't access it. So far the only way back I found was to insert the CF directly into my PC's card reader. Windows says it needs to be formatted which I do. Put the CF back into the iPod and now iTunes sees it. I restore again but the same sequence happens. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated. Thanks again for the video.

A note about the Dell pocket DJ is that it will need the Playsforsure firmware installed to make it accessible to Win 7, 8, 8.1, 10. Nice video. I didn’t realize you could upgrade the capacity of these machines. What’s the largest capacity they can handle? Also, do you take advantage of having it apart to replace the battery? With the original hard drive gone, it would give you more battery life to be sure.

    • @GaryQuiring
      @GaryQuiring  3 года назад +1

      I never went over 64gig. Some say 256gig cards work but have issues. The internal memory probably can't handle that many songs if you managed to fill a 256gig card. As for the battery I used my iPod Mini's in a speaker dock so I did not replace the battery. But I agree it's worth doing while it's apart. This video is old, I did this over 7 years ago. CF cards are going to be harder to find at a good price. They are not popular anymore with digital cameras.

    My Mini's battery is ready to be replaced and I appreciate this non-destructive hard drive to CF card, pin to pin upgrade/switch out. I use the mini regularly and look forward ti trying this. At this writing I can get a "major brand" 32 GB card with write speeds of up to 1066x., for @ $38.00. I have had hi speed flash back fire on me (flash drives too fast for the CPU...) and I notice you use a 400x CF card in this 2013 video. Slower cards are available. What do you recommend for a card speed? Considering these older boards, Is faster always better?

      That is a disk error. Either the memory card you used is damaged/incompatible or maybe when you plugged the CF card in the pins are not aligned correctly or one got bent. I would take it apart and check. You can also power up the iPod without sliding it back into the case. You don't need the click wheel to verify if it will boot correctly.

    So I guess you could use apples disk utility and a card reader to verify a microdrive before you installed a second hand one. I think that iPod drives are formatted to fat32, which I think has size limitations and maybe the cause of problems with people using cards bigger than 32gb.

      I have tested 64gb cards and they work with no issues. The problem is some are using a SD to CF adapter and they are not compatible with cards over 32gb. The adapter must be XC compatible. I bought a working ipod from ebay and another of the same Kingston 64GB CF cards from a different vendor. However, when I tried to install the ipod software from itunes after changing the cards it came up with the sad ipod face. Thinking this was maybe a faulty card I tried swapping the CF cards from my working moded ipod and the new, not working ipod over. As expected my original CF card in the 'new' ipod worked and the new CF card in my original ipod was showing the ipod sad face. I assumed the new CF card was faulty and sent it back for a refund before ordering another one from the original vendor.
    When the new card arrived I put it in the 'new' ipod and tried to install the software again; no luck again. This time the folder with exclamation mark sign came up and when I plugged it in to the computer it came up as 'do not disconnect' but was not found by Itunes. I tried setting the ipod to 'disk mode', it went to disk mode but still couldn't be found. I tried plugging it in to my work computer instead of my mac, using device manager I found the ipod could be seen, but it was still not being picked up by itunes.
    What I did next I will regret for a long time. I again tried swapping the hard drives in the 2 ipods to see what was causing the problem, this time both ipods now came up with the sad Ipod sign. I swapped them back and they both came up with the sad Ipod sign again. I tried the 4gb microdrive that came with my original 'working' ipod in the original ipod, this came up on itunes as usual.
    Somehow the new ipod seems to have corrupted both the flash drives. This raises many questions, how did this happen? Why did this not happen the first time I tried swapping the hard drives over? Any ideas?
    Also, if I bought a CF card reader, is there someway I can try to reset the cards to their factory settings? Thereby giving me a chance to redo the whole process for my original 'working' ipod and not wasting a hell of a lot of tim and money?
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi! Done this swap two years ago with a 16 Gb Transcend CF.
    Actually it works fine, but there's one thing that does not work, and it's when connecting to my Kenwood BT-92 SD (Car device).
    The Kenwood doesn't recognize the ipod. i've Tried also with 5th gen ipod it works.
    Will appreciatte any suggestion about... !
    Thank you and great vid!

      No idea since I don't own the Kenwood. I did a quick Google and found a reviewer on Amazon that states the Kenwood can't handle more than 255 files per folder on SD devices. Did the iPod you upgraded work with the Kenwood prior to the upgrade? I would try resetting the iPod via iTunes and start over. Maybe something something got corrupt on the first pass. I had one iPod once where it did not function correctly the first time and a factory reset solved it.

    Selected songs stay at 0:00 - not playing after CF card.
    I have two iPod minis of the same year. I have installed a new CF drive (CF is SanDisk Extreme 32 GB) in one and it is synced, it starts OK. It shows the songs but, going to any song and hitting play shows the time of the song on the lower right, the progress bar, and 0:00 on the left. It stays that way. It stays at 0:00 and will not play. It is in play mode, but there is no movement of the progress bar and no movement from 0:00.
    This unit came from a Goodwill so who knows what problems it had before. Is this some setting problem I have to understand, or is this a logic board problem? Logic Board seems unlikely as this is not a folder icon anymore at startup (it used to be).
    iTunes sync was done in several ways, fill extra space, don't fill extra space, manually manage music, don't manually manage music, Enable disk use, don't enable disk use. This is High Sierra and iTunes 12.7.4.76.
    Took it apart again and stuck the CF card into my mac at one point to make sure it was apple formatted.
    I have run through all it’s available diagnostics - several times. It appears to have loaded and synced, but I cannot get it to play. All these how to videos on RUclips had convinced me this was doable. If anyone can chow me where I went wrong, I would be very grateful. Otherwise, I still have no clue and perhaps it is time to get my money back on the CF cards.
    The other mini seems glued in the case. The insides will not come out. Bummer.

    • @GaryQuiring
      @GaryQuiring  6 лет назад

      That is weird but since you don't know if it worked before who knows. I would try reloading from iTunes from a different PC and see what happens. What about the music, MP3's? Bitrate?

    • @obliograce3551
      @obliograce3551 6 лет назад

      OK, I just tried it from my laptop (Macbook PRO 2012) Same as before. Standard mp3s. Don't know what I can change there. My other mini still has the old hard drive in it and it still works as before. I tried resetting that one and reloading it in the same way. It worked just as it did before. So either, there is some odd problem in the logic board or, this extreme version of the SanDisk 32 is not working. I am without a clue here.
      And, that old one that is still working on the hard drive also has a new CF card and battery waiting for it. I know how the insides come out as I did that with the other one with no problems. This one isn't even budging, not even wiggling. The innards seems completely stuck to the case. I have very carefully worked a letter opener around it as best I could using the opened case as a guide not to push too hard anywhere. It’s just stuck.

      Yes you can. I did it to 2 of mine. I am thinking of increasing it to 256gb. I am not sure it will be able to recognize that much memory. At the moment, I use one as additional memory for my tablet. Everyone sees it as a old 4 GB MP3 player and it is small. So they are not as likely to swipe it.

      Just put one Lexar 128 GB into my Mini. Synching my iTunes library /70-80 GB) as per now. Had to plug it into my old iBook with 10.5 and iTunes 10 to do a restore.

      Depends on what you have installed, i have decided to opt for a 64GB sandisk extreme (120MB/sec) card inside mine, and will most likely update after a few weeks. The 4GB drive worked fine so there is no reason i can't use a 64GB drive to the same effect. Sync speed is so much faster with the 64GB card.
