Life stages are a big factor in buying a house or condo.
I’m very sympathetic to the rent versus ownership conundrum. This said, I bought my first home in ‘92. Now that I am older (and am a condo owner rather than a ‘real’ house owner) and paid my mortgage off a decade ago, I now have a far greater sense of financial security should something befall me and I need the money. I would not have that had I rented all my life. And when I look at my monthly shelter costs, an equivalent apartment would cost me more than I pay now. My only challenge is I need to find a reliable handy man. My experiences with contractors have been nightmares.

Contratulations ladies! Having a home these days means securing a roof over your head. Thats a huge accomplishment, since you now can control the biggest cost of your living expenses in a city of GTA. That will free up lots of other budgets that you can allocate to your future savings..
Great video, I'd love to see more videos about home ownership (especially about any surprises you encountered) and the thought process that goes into buying a home.
In my situation, it makes more sense to rent. I have a choice of either buying a home or focusing on my career (studying, me time).. I choose the latter. The GTA market is just unfair. Moving outside of Toronto in a million dollar home is just not making sense (especially if your starting a new business or job market in your industry is volatile). Good luck guys.

I used to stay by the lake in Toronto in a shoebox .. my parents were happy with the location when they visited me and I loved it 2. I’m sure time will change in years to come. Our families unfortunately own homes in a country where the government can seize it any day, just because they want to, and given the current state of war, real estate isn't worth much there. Moving a family here is a priority! We're in Whitby now!

That’s funny to hear that you have more fun to do if you live in a house, I assume in suburbs😅 well, except your yard there is nothing to do. If you live in an area with at least some level of density you can walk to grocery stores, restaurants even your friends. Ability to hang up with your friends and not think about driving a car after you have a couple bottles of beer is priceless

We've settled with Whitby and really happy with our choice! We've considered Oshawa as well, but found Whitby a little closer to Toronto and overall cozier
Well… you’ve got to be more specific with the video title saying something like “buying home in Ontario” because in other parts of Canada the experience might be different. I could never understand people buying shacks in GTA or Vancouver for the money you can afford a decent house in Atlantic Canada.
Ha... If you can afford a home and also afford to renovate, home ownership can't be that expensive.Your rent or condo fees can be almost as much as the mortgage. In small towns word of mouth puts contracters out of business if they are not good at what they do.
Considering the prices of everything today, I would say that now more than ever buying is better than renting. Paying off a home that can later be used as a retirement fund is something that most of us will only have the change of saving money in. Is it unfair that we pay in interest 3 if not more times what we actually bought the home for, no. But the alternative is to have nothing. My 2 cents

Seeing this video took me aback a bit, as it seems as though the nuance of what made you decide to buy a house wasn't shared in the trap video. Given you work remotely, what was the rationale of still sticking to the GTA and not moving it to Barrie or Wasaga?
Thanks for your question. The homeownership trap video does briefly discuss buying a home as a lifestyle choice, and not a “wealth/status” thing, it’s just tucked in the very end of the video. For us, it was a decision driven by our family needs and financial situation ( aka lifestyle). It was a question of paying two rents or buying a home that could house both us and our family. As for the location. We love the city, and didn’t want to be far from it. Anna has to travel to Toronto downtown for work every other week, so we couldn’t go too far. We also wanted to be closer to Lake Ontario for the climate perks it provides. We actually didn’t consider north of GTA, because it felt far from everything. My family lives in Montreal, so we travel there often and didn’t want to increase our travel time. Hope this answers your question.
Yes, it does. Everyone's situation is unique i guess, and it takes a lot of brain power to up and decide that it's time to start the mortgage dance & house hunting adventure. Lake Ontario is sure one good consideration when one's house hunting here in Ontario, as it can help you relax at next to no cost, when you have reasonable proximity to it. I know you mentioned West GTA is overhyped hahaha but not sure if East GTA has that same magical ancestral small town feel of the west you know? Video suggestion: would appreciate seeing a formula for duration and methods to save towards that $120K down-payment for a $600K house as an example. I'll take a 1 bed condo/apartment. Too much responsibility and financial burden in home ownership. In all honesty I don't really need more than a room anyway so buying a home would be a massive waste of time/space that someone else who needs it could have.
