I own an iPad Pro 12.9 2017 (2nd generation), and after watching this video my thought is: I'm waiting for iPad Pro 5th generation! With the new iPad Air, Apple has churned out a device that has greatly shortened the distance with the iPad Pro, so I am convinced that with the next generation Apple will bring out some iPad Pro to be amazed (waiting does not cost me anything: my iPad Pro, after three years of daily work, still works very fine).
Technically though Procreate is the only Pro software that relies only on ram amount, the other apps performance like Clip Studio or Callipeg are determined by how much free disk space you have that can be used as scratch disk, so the more you have the better.
I just got my 12.9 pro, no regrets! Love the canvas size and the sidecar screen sharing. I upgraded from the second gen 10.9 pro, this feels so much bigger!
Your videos are always great, Brad, it was because of you and all your awesome reviews that I decided to go for an ipad instead of a pen display. I got my ipad Air 4 on friday and I'm loving the drawing experience. Getting used to procreate is a little more complicated, but I love the pen and it's just so fun to draw on it!
just noticed after watching the video a few times, during the comparison of the pixel vs layers section of the video the 2018 ipad pro has a different dpi than the others. It looks like 600 was typed in, which means the amount of layers would be greater than 91.
Kinda weird that I’ve been thinking about getting an iPad and trying to make a decision on which one for the past couple days and then this video comes out. This video was super helpful, thanks!
Hmm, i do like the idea of the air. I'm not a professional artist but i use between 40-90 layers as is, and I don't want the ram of the air to limit me like that (nor do i want to risk crashing).. Ahhh i want to save money but in the long run the pro makes way more sense. Thanks, your videos are primarily what i watch (along with others just incase you're biased) and they've helped me really narrow down exactly what i need!
Whoa! I’ve seen most Brad’s videos and never been early before. I’m rocking my 7th gen iPad with Apple Pencil 1. Although I wish I had waited a few months for the 8th gen iPad, I still love my 7th gen and use it daily for media consumption, taking notes for college, and of course my one and only drawing device.
I have been using the entry level iPad from 2018 for the past two years to design murals in Art Studio Pro. There are no layer limits like Procreate, but lag became noticeable once I hit about 80 layers with fairly large-size canvases. It was basically unusable once I hit 100. You are absolutely right that this device is an insane bang-for-buck and I can vouch for it’s reliability and usability in a professional setting. That said, I will probably go for the Pro once I can justify the cost. If anyone out there is on a budget and is debating what to do, I’d suggest the entry level model, boost the storage to 128gb and get the Pencil 1. The same setup has been a great workhorse for me.
I have a 6th gen with the old pencil and I love it a lot! 9.7 inches just the perfect size for drawing. The only thing I miss is the FaceID because I would like to play around with some apps and the new pencil bc I have to connect this one manually after every restart.
Hey, I am actually an android user. So I have no experience in iphomes or ipads. But since I wanna draw to start my own sticker shop, I am planning to buy a ipad. Since I have no experience I serach ed through youtube and saw your video. I watched your video until the very end without skipping a single second. I was worried that I would have to buy ipad pro 12.9 even though I don't have that much cash.but now I think ipad air is also suitable for that. Thanks to u! This is a lot of informations ! Thanks a lot.. ❤️ Since this really impressed me with good narrating and informations , here is a new subscriber for ya 🙊❤️
I was wondering if the 64gb iPad Air would be enough for drawings and office work (Word and PowerPoint). And it would be amazing if the iPad Mini gets the redesign with thin bezels much like the new Air. The screen size would increase dramatically using the same dimensions of the mini.
I just bought the ipad air this week and was going to return it to get the pro but after watching your video just now i'm keeping my air. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and reviews of these devices. it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the comparison! Tbh my biggest deal breaker was the Apple Pencil, and when you mentioned that there isn’t much of a difference performance wise, it convinced me to go for the entry level iPad. Can’t wait to try procreate
I have been around your channel since the ipad pro 2018. And I have been doubting since forever to buy it for drawing. And now I finally had the monney to go 'big" and buy the 2020 one. Your drawings and information always amazed me to go for it. I bought one Wednesday and I'm really glad I went for it. I still love drawing on paper with pencil but the Ipad can do so much more.
I have an Ipad 6th generation, I have been considering Buying an Ipad air 4. But don't really seem worth it. Probably makes sense waiting for the next I pad pro and going for it. Thank you for the review, Brad.
Thanks for video!!! I use to do graphic design when I was younger and I was trying to decide which iPad to get. Your video hit on a lot pros and cons for each device and helped me make the right decision, for me, on which device to buy.
are 64gb enough though? i really have no clue what i need 😂 i'm new to digital art and wanna start off with an apple product but i'm struggling to make a choice.
64 gb its enough just you need external disk for storage, if you dont play big game or download big movie / same for heavy note etc then 64 gb should be enough ^^ hope it can help
I am an artist and I paint from photos. I am thinking of buying an iPad. I've been researching which is the best ipad for what I want to do, which is to import several photos, edit so I'm joining the three to come up with the best reference photo to paint. I don't know if that makes sense. In a couple of RUclips videos, it mentions Lightroom and Photoshop that come on an iPad. Most of these videos the guys speak really fast and use words I am not familiar with. You actually speak slow enough to make sense which is why I'm subscribing to your channel. Would greatly appreciate some advice to an iPad novice
Thanks for all the videos you make, Brad. They're a big help. 😊 The main issue I have with the iPads is the storage you get. If you want to upgrade that, the price difference is just too much for me. I wanted to get the new Air, but there's no middle range 128GB option, for that price, maybe I should just search for an iPad Pro 2018. 🤔
I got the iPad 2019 7th gen after watching your videos. It's amazing! I use it everyday for draw and at the moment, I see no reason to upgrade for a better iPad
Great comparison, but I feel like it's missing the best iPad option you can buy today: a refurbished 2018 iPad pro. The 2020 model made almost no real changes of substance for drawing, save that jump from 4 to 6GB of RAM. You can get a refurb 2018 iPad pro with basically all the same benefits of the 2020 model (laminated display, 120hz refresh, 12.9 inch display model, etc...) for pretty much the same price as the current iPad air sells for.
Good comment..but ipad pro 3rd generation 2018 is almost out of stock from everywhere. What else can I get affordable ipad as a starter artist in digital art but want to invest it in long term. Other than pro 3rd generation please
FUDGE i read this too late. i just got 10.2 ipad air because my 9.7 ipad pro broke (won't turn on) BUT i seem not to feel the difference. got the paper feel screen and kinda enjoy it. but i decided that ipad is where i rough draft my sketches and i do the majority of job at my main machine
i am a beginner artist and im gonna buy an ipad, which one is the best for me, ipad 8th gen or ipad air? i wanna use procreate but i don't know how many gigabytes i will need please help
To be honest I will probably get the regular iPad since it is cheaper and also not too small. I am also kind of young but I would like to start doing virtual art so I am saving up for an iPad and an Apple pencil. Hopefully I can get them, thank you for the helpful video!
upgrading from the base model 6th gen.... ive found that i run into issues with storage and ram! big time! im stuck between the pro with 120gb and the air with 256... i think im going with the pro for the usb-c connectivity
This video was so informative and super super helpful! I've been drawing for years, and I've been thinking of getting into the digital world for some time now, but I've never known which iPad would be perfect for me at the moment. This video helped a whole lot and thank you so much!
Comment not related to this tablet but... your reviews helped me a lot, i was looking for a good screen tablet, now i just ordered it. Thank you very much, you do such a fantastic work!
Hard decision, I use it for drawing, reading comics, gaming, in short pretty much everything that I’d usually do on a Macbook. Have the old Pro 9.7, still running smoothly, but I’d love to have the new pencil attached to the iPad.
this just sold me on the ipad, can’t afford the air quite yet but the laminated screen difference between the 8th gen and the mini is what was stopping me from making a choice. have no problem with a smaller screen it’s just if the screen isn’t that much of an issue, then i’m all for saving a dime
One question: The scribble you are outlining at 7:00, did you took a photo first from it with the ipad air and start to outline in procreate, or did you do the scribble (grey lines) also digitally? I just wanted to know because I want to continue traditional art and sell it. Therefore there are 2 possibilities: 1. Buying a good scanner, scan the original and edit it with a drawing app (procreate or adobe PS) OR 2. Taking a photo with an ipad and edit it on the ipad itself with a software! What do you think?
hello, my name is abdul and i love your videos as a designer and i think it would be nice if you did a more recent version of this video as there are newer line ipads and it would be nice to know which can best be used from the new 10th gen to the pro
Could you compare the ipad pro 2018 to the new air as well? They're similar in price now so I'm sure there are a lot of people wondering which to get now.
Get the ipad Air, since it has the latest A14 Bionic processor and same 4gigs of ram as the pro 2018, the speed will be more than the Ipad pro 2018 with same amount of layers.
@@amolkairamkonda9270 I got myself the iPad Air 3 a few weeks ago, really like it! Don't really see a point in the latest to be honest. I literally only use it for note taking and drawing. Saved myself several hundreds of euros that way.
Thank you for this video. You have just answered a question I had with number of layers between the ipad air 4 vs pro 2020. Currently waiting for UPS to deliver my air 4 64GB.
Thanks for this! Im using a 2016 12.9 ipad pro as my main rig and this because I got it from ebay at a great price. Now im needing to upgrade to get a better processor and seems like even the new ipad 8th should do fine as the screen size is good but maybe an ipad air would be the best fit. I might save and get it next year
You didn't talk about the air's storage options, it's 256gb after 64gb, but if going 256, I'd just save up some money and get the pro, Is 64gb enough? Even for someone that gonna edit videos, and play 2/3 games?
if the only thing that is worrying you is the size, i think is more about a personal choice, for example i draw in my legs in bed so i prefer the 11 inch and because its more comfortable to move around with it or travel, the good thing about the big one is the space to draw but with 11 inch personally i think you're good to go, in my case i have tiny hands but for people with big hands maybe its better the 12.9 inch ipad. (my english is not the best but i hope this helps you)
I am a little bit confused. When you compared all iPads with the layer number you said that the 8th gen iPad jumped up in layers compared to the iPad mini but they both have 43 layers. I am not sure if I am just stupid or if you made a mistake.
Usually "more ram = more levels " but procreate is still not updated for the new models than it show up less levels right now . You see less levels on the ipad air too but they should fix this problem with the next update .
Heck dilemma!! I'm looking to buy an ipad pro the larger 12.9 size, but as a newbie to drawing on an ipad (im an old school artist) I really don't know which generation to start with. Also what gb should I go for?? Any advice guys ?? ❤ 🇬🇧
Hey Brad, I was just getting into digital art and was wondering what are the export settings for some of the more commonly used apps (like Procreate and Vectornator) to apps like Instagram tumblr etc. Thanks a lot!! Huge inspiration from ur videos!
Plz help me out should I buy laptop tablet or ipad for my art i am artist and i wanna take digital art as profession as means of earning and is adobe Photoshop and illustrator available in the tablets or ipads ? Please guide me budget friendly
Great review. The interesting thing is the iPad Mini had the same number (43) of layers as the new iPad. Is that actually the case? You seemed to be saying the new iPad with more ram had more layers but it also had 43.
The lag and latency shows more on certain iPads. He said all iPad apps are optimized but I have to disagree. I've seen other videos where they show the difference in lag between the iPad pro and the iPad air. I'm sticking with my iPad pro 2017
These are in slow motion. In real life you really can’t tell the difference. The only time I see there being any difference is in specific games that need crazy reflexes. I bought my 2018 pro ages ago and it’s a perfect tablet. If I was to buy a Tablet now, it would be the air. You just don’t get enough for the price of the pro. I don’t take photos, don’t do AR, don’t watch that many movies to care for the speakers, and the 120hz is way over rated. For just drawing, and animating and discovering Nomad. The iPad Air seems great!
I have the 2018 entry-level iPad & the most recent piece I finished was in the 4000x4000 dimensions area. I had a maximum of 4 layers, lol, & while I just so happened to make due by working smart (& duplicating files before I made changes), it STILL lagged & crashed on me multiple times! It was incredibly frustrating. 😔
Hey Brad! Your video is super helpful! Thank you! Especially showing the pixels & layers to amount of layers compatible Just got an 8th gen from Santa! I do large scale digital paintings (hyper-realism "oil"paintings) that tend to crash my iMac 😭 Do you think the 8th gen has enough guts to handle large canvases with only 2-3 layers? Or should I have it returned and go for the pro?? Thanks for what you do!
I got a 2018 iPad Pro 11 right before the newer one came out this year. Still super glad I got it because the extra features like the pro motion display and the speakers still make giddy to use it. I will recommend the pro over the air but it looks like a good option for those who want to spend less.
I got the pro, air is more affordable if that matters to you. Would work fine for simply using pro create. But I love my pro, and don’t regret paying extra for the 4 apps I use. I use maybe max 20 layers and depends really the project I’m doing. On average maybe I use 10 layers and rarely see any issue on the pro. Sometimes procreate crashes but everything closes and saves where I was
The Apple Pencil also never runs out of charge, and the otter case for pros damn great also. I only went all out because I need to keep my iPad protected when I’m tattooing and I wanted to make sure that if something happens in work it’s as protected as can be.
Would it be better to get the iPad pro or the iPad air or just wait for the new iPad pro? I just want it for school and taking notes and reading pdfs but I'm just concerned about the latency with the pencil
Me personally I don’t really like the old type of glass apple are using in it. If you’re ok with buying used devices go try the latest iPad Pro 10.5” , a really good device to go pro, get 120hz and stay on budget ;)
Has procreate been updated to make use of the RAM on the new ipad Air yet? I'd love to go with that model instead if so, otherwise I may op for a 2018 Pro.
You made me think I should get the regular one until you mentioned the space so I guess the higher one it is. Also I’m confused on the layer part. What does the layers do for you?

He was clearly comparing the iPads on the table. I guess he missed that during the editing cause he didn't overlay "*32 Layers" for the iPad Mini
@@MarlonDeLaTorreyoutube1 I checked how many layers I got on my ipad 7th gen and it was 43 XD
He was comparing ipad 8th gen to the old ipad 7th gen
No matter what you say, your line art is reallllly good
Its out of this world
Pun intended
i dont really see anything special about his doodles
I am your father, Luke. Noooooo!!!
You should get his tutorial on Udemy. It's amazing!
just noticed after watching the video a few times, during the comparison of the pixel vs layers section of the video the 2018 ipad pro has a different dpi than the others. It looks like 600 was typed in, which means the amount of layers would be greater than 91.
120Hz display is nice, but aren't you forgetting most of us draw at around 2AM with sleep deprivation? Raise up "30Hz=120Hz at 2AM" gang!
I know right?
@Jim Halpert Why you triggered by a 6 month old comment?
@Jim Halpert Jim would never say that, identity theft is a crime
Kinda weird that I’ve been thinking about getting an iPad and trying to make a decision on which one for the past couple days and then this video comes out. This video was super helpful, thanks!
I feel so relieved, I about to ask for an Ipad for Christmas and this makes my choice so much easier!
So which one you are gonna buy?? Actually I am also gonna buy one for Christmas.
Yeah same! I was going to get an iPad Pro 12.9 for uni... but it’s real expensive and a keep doubting my decision.
I am more inclined to ipad Air 4th gen
@@priyapal6664 ME TOO !!
Ditto
Just did the same procreate test on 7th gen and it gave 43 layers.
@@zeththedarkmage you know youre rich when your only drawing device is an ipad instead of paper
Brad: They jumped from 43 layers to 43 layers!
Me: *screams in excitement* I have to get that.
WOW AAAAAA
SCREEM
Once you can justify the cost?
Since this really impressed me with good narrating and informations , here is a new subscriber for ya 🙊❤️
I was wondering if the 64gb iPad Air would be enough for drawings and office work (Word and PowerPoint).
And it would be amazing if the iPad Mini gets the redesign with thin bezels much like the new Air. The screen size would increase dramatically using the same dimensions of the mini.
Wondering the same
You can use pendrive usb don’t worry for space.
But wouldn't they update the pen?
Thank you I chosed the ipad air4 becaus its on a lower budget but god for procreate
Thank you so much, I needed a better prospective , I begin art school in December & I’m weighing my options. This helped out a lot.
This solidified me needing a pro, I've been on the fence since I heard about it
I'm always very thankful for all the reviews you've done Brad! I finally got my hands on an Ipad pro thanks to your comparisons❤
3:00 OMGGG Gorgeous frame!!!
I have an Ipad 6th generation, I have been considering Buying an Ipad air 4. But don't really seem worth it. Probably makes sense waiting for the next I pad pro and going for it. Thank you for the review, Brad.
“Jump up” from 43 layers from the iPad mini to 43 layers on the regular iPad... jump up?
It jumped up but didn’t go anywhere
Jump up from the 7th gen ipad to the 8th gen ipad, not from the mini.
Same. U made a choice?
@@nyuno2652 so far im happy with 64gb, but i try to keep it down to only Procreate and GoodNotes haha
@@sannyxo21 so you got the ipad air? i mean for more storage its possible to save images on an external hard disc
@@nyuno2652 yes i got the iPad Air 2020 with 64gb 😊
The main issue I have with the iPads is the storage you get. If you want to upgrade that, the price difference is just too much for me.
I wanted to get the new Air, but there's no middle range 128GB option, for that price, maybe I should just search for an iPad Pro 2018. 🤔
I like the pro's size. That makes the biggest difference as an artist. More area to draw on
I got the iPad 2019 7th gen after watching your videos. It's amazing! I use it everyday for draw and at the moment, I see no reason to upgrade for a better iPad
I probably gonna ask for ipad 8th gen for christmas😂
Thanks for the review! I'm honestly thinking about buying a small ipad for on the go sketches to work with my AIO that I'll get soon
ooo i love your videos and hopefully one day I can upgrade my ipad
FUDGE i read this too late. i just got 10.2 ipad air because my 9.7 ipad pro broke (won't turn on) BUT i seem not to feel the difference. got the paper feel screen and kinda enjoy it. but i decided that ipad is where i rough draft my sketches and i do the majority of job at my main machine
The smackdown ive been waiting for!
i am a beginner artist and im gonna buy an ipad, which one is the best for me, ipad 8th gen or ipad air? i wanna use procreate but i don't know how many gigabytes i will need please help
To be honest I will probably get the regular iPad since it is cheaper and also not too small. I am also kind of young but I would like to start doing virtual art so I am saving up for an iPad and an Apple pencil. Hopefully I can get them, thank you for the helpful video!
also definitely will be getting procreate. I dont know if I will have enough for paperlike but if I do I will most likely get it.
I tried out the iPad mini 6 and the drawing screen was absolutely perfect. Curious if there's an older iPad model with the same screen tech.
upgrading from the base model 6th gen.... ive found that i run into issues with storage and ram! big time! im stuck between the pro with 120gb and the air with 256... i think im going with the pro for the usb-c connectivity
Just get the one with more storage, drawing apps dont lag on the Ipad regardless if you have the pro, the air or just the regular one.
I might save and get it next year
Man this video came up literally A DAY after I just bought my first iPad
Each model is fine for illustrations . The only one i don't like is the ipad mini because it's too small for me .
Good review, thanks for the thoroughness. This is of great benefit as I try to select the right model for the rapidly approaching holiday.
Hey brad! Great video as always. Please show us the color accuracy difference in ipad 8, air 4 and pro
You didn't talk about the air's storage options, it's 256gb after 64gb, but if going 256, I'd just save up some money and get the pro,
Is 64gb enough? Even for someone that gonna edit videos, and play 2/3 games?
Hey Brad should I buy the iPad 11 or 12.9 inch for illustration and animation please make a video on this
if the only thing that is worrying you is the size, i think is more about a personal choice, for example i draw in my legs in bed so i prefer the 11 inch and because its more comfortable to move around with it or travel, the good thing about the big one is the space to draw but with 11 inch personally i think you're good to go, in my case i have tiny hands but for people with big hands maybe its better the 12.9 inch ipad. (my english is not the best but i hope this helps you)

This is what I wanted and needed to hear 😍 getting the entry level one for sure!
I am a little bit confused. When you compared all iPads with the layer number you said that the 8th gen iPad jumped up in layers compared to the iPad mini but they both have 43 layers. I am not sure if I am just stupid or if you made a mistake.
I legit clicked comments to see if someone else thought this😂
Usually "more ram = more levels " but procreate is still not updated for the new models than it show up less levels right now . You see less levels on the ipad air too but they should fix this problem with the next update .
I think he meant, the ipad 8th gen has more layers than the previous ipads (previous gens) not the mini
He compared it with the older ipad 7th gen which dint have 43 layers
Heck dilemma!! I'm looking to buy an ipad pro the larger 12.9 size, but as a newbie to drawing on an ipad (im an old school artist) I really don't know which generation to start with. Also what gb should I go for??
Any advice guys ?? ❤ 🇬🇧
Can’t decide between buying now an air or wait for the 2021 pro! I need to replace my ‘14 MacBook sono sod Lightroom and media consumption

What about a comicbook artist which would be the better choice ?

Plz help me out should I buy laptop tablet or ipad for my art i am artist and i wanna take digital art as profession as means of earning and is adobe Photoshop and illustrator available in the tablets or ipads ? Please guide me budget friendly
Just out of size I might upgrade to the 12 inch iPad Pro or maybe just wait for the new I pad pro that will inevitably come out soon
Great review. The interesting thing is the iPad Mini had the same number (43) of layers as the new iPad. Is that actually the case? You seemed to be saying the new iPad with more ram had more layers but it also had 43.
I'll be getting the iPad pro on my birthday. I'm excited

Braddddd please give "realistic paint studio" a try I think you'll love it.
Can u make this video again now? Because new iPad pro arrived
i still can’t decide!
is the air worth the money compared to the normal ipad? i feel like it might be a better investment down the line. thoughts?
Hey Brad! Your video is super helpful! Thank you! Especially showing the pixels & layers to amount of layers compatible
Just got an 8th gen from Santa!
Air is much better dude I sold my pro for the air , instantly noticeable speed!
Paperlike is crushing these sponsor spots. 10/10 of the last videos I watched.
Hello, can someone tell me, if not counting stats and all. is it better get a bigger screen of 12.9 or is 10.9 enough? Whats better for drawing?
Bigger screen/space for drawing is always better.

I'm still struggling whether I should get an Ipad Pro or Ipad Air for digital art
If I could afford I would go with the pro, but I’m sure the Air will be more than enough so I chose the air
All the difference between one product and the other is barely noticeable unless we put them side by side and use them both at the same time. 🙃
Awesome review as always! Im planning to get the iPad 8 but is it powerful enough for animation apps like rough animator and affinity?
Me personally I don’t really like the old type of glass apple are using in it. If you’re ok with buying used devices go try the latest iPad Pro 10.5” , a really good device to go pro, get 120hz and stay on budget ;)
So much info for layers and ram. Wish there was a graphic to see everything at once. Other than that, AMAZING video.
Has procreate been updated to make use of the RAM on the new ipad Air yet? I'd love to go with that model instead if so, otherwise I may op for a 2018 Pro.
I'm pretty sure it has, If you search iPad air procreate layers there's a video someone made that includes the updated amounts
You made me think I should get the regular one until you mentioned the space so I guess the higher one it is. Also I’m confused on the layer part. What does the layers do for you?
