That orchestra is amazing. Love the use of the turntable, really communicates the progression of composition.

This song and every staging I've seen is the most beautiful moment in musical theatre.

Yes, and in every one of them, I automatically burst into tears when the chorus gets to "Forever." It's Pavlovian.

The deceptive simplicity of this is beautiful. I choked with emotion at 0:57 when Georges reaches for the baby he knows he will never see again... and again when he shakes Jules hand, and as he walks away Jules realizes he will never see Georges again... and finally, as the scrim descends and Georges is left alone, trapped outside of his own painting, unable to connect with anyone real. This was beautifully staged!

George has said that he 'lived in the canvas', but sometimes I wonder how much his canvas really lived in him; with death of the author and all that, such immortality is bought at the cost of the painting having a life of its own, what with all those experts disagreeing on whether he painted a baby carriage or a waffle stove.

The genius of Stephen Sondheim lifts the genius of Georges Seurat. The words and music of this song are just soul touching. I've seen some gorgeous performances and one of the most touching was performed outside in the theatre district during the Covid pandemic -- various B-way performers came together and sang it - Bernadette Peters, Lin-Manuel Miranda etc. and it was touching and heartbreaking and awe inspiring at a time when we all needed something that touched the human heart.

A favorite, not just in musical theatre, but all of music. Heard it a million times. Seen several stagings... but watching this...THIS! My soul stood still, breathless, overcome with the potential beauty of humanity realized. I'm in awe. THANK YOU.

What an ASTOUNDING interpretation! I’ve seen the recording of the original and a few staged versions, but this one does things I’ve never seen, and I love it. I especially like the personal moments Georges has with so many characters-kissing his mother goodbye, looking at his baby, shaking Jules’s hand and later lighting his cigar…it shows that he really did care about all of them. Plus I love that there is an extra chorus of people, so ALL of the figures in the painting are represented; it literally and figuratively fills the space and makes it richer. Add in the moment where Georges stands triumphantly in the middle of his world, directing it as it revolves to match his vision, and that final touch with the monkey, and you have something truly spectacular. Thank you so much for uploading this! Does anyone know if the whole production can be found? I’d love to see it-but even if I only get to watch this one number, it is enough!

    G A W D !
    such beauty!
The scale of the production and staging here is magnificent
and balanced with such a wealth of humanity in the detail.
(how much did this production cost? - worth it, too.)

Couldn't find any figures for this show in particular, but Châtelet productions typically cost 3 or 4 million euros. Because of the elaborate sets and the size of the orchestra (46 pieces), Sunday was probably even more expensive.

And from what I've seen it didn't even run for long !! I hope le Châtelet will do some beautiful productions like this again when they can re-open !

IDK if I'm 100 % on board with the turntable, for the same reason I didn't like the Island coming on horizontally at Goodman in 1987--it ignores the "verticals of trees." But it's used to fantastic effect.

Some parts of this are exquisite and genius and others feel…a little off? I love Georges having moments of interaction with the characters and not simply arranging figures. The gesture to his baby is genius and heartbreaking. But him rolling around on the ground didn’t do it for me and some of his motions felt more like performance than an artist putting on the last finishing touches. Watch the Broadway production - Mandy is at work! He’s running around everywhere setting up the last little details.

I think that the rolling around, playing with the water and etc. was meant to signify that (almost) everything in this song is happening in his head as he completes the painting. For the first time, he personally acknowledged each one of them, which, in the context of the story is very out of character. Then, notice how at one point, all of them circled him as if acknowledging that George is about to immortalize them in the painting. Idk, this is the impression that I got. It’s a different take but I think it’s one of the best staging of this song.

I am not a fan of this one. Also, the musical tempo is slower for some reason. Everything is just drrraggged out. Did you notice also that the chorus doesn't enunciate? Like, there is not a consonant to be heard.
