Lee was such a great character for people with disadvantages to look up to, showing with hard work you can become great, instead they just made bloodlines and eyes, having a tailed beast the most important thing.
There’s a saying, “hard work beats talent only when talent doesn’t work hard”..so it’s pretty accurate for them to make him impressive but not the best.

Not too mention he was a key player in the early storyline but became a supporting character later on and then we never really see him besides fillers and a couple fights here and there. With his team vs Kisame it was really 90% Guy and 9% Neji. It's like the writers built him up so much in the beginning to he's just kind of there. In the end war all he does is go stage 6 of the gates just to perfectly time throwing a kunai.
He had the most potential and his story line of "I have zero skills but if I train really hard I can match anyone". He was built as a means to demonstrate that even if you have an OP ability like a nine tailed beast or the sharingan etc that you can still be great. Also we never got to see Neji and Lee duel and Lee surpass him. The basically gave Lee's storyline to Guy and showcased his rivalry with Kakashi. I love Guy and he's one of my favorite characters but lee deserved more.

Crazy thing is 4th/5th gate Lee probably could have beaten any of the kids here. Just so happens that Gaara had the perfect defenses for Lee, which honestly almost wasn't enough. If you think any of them could have handled getting ping pong balled around you're insane. Sasuke and Naruto got mollywhopped by base Lee. Lol. Also, SSJ Vegeta theme definitely fits unlocking the inner gates.
Nah they overdid his defense here, when he fought Sauske, he was breaking his sand armor with basic strikes, but lee hitting 100x harder here pummeling the shit out of him was barely cracking it. Pretty dumb tbh.

The thing that always bugged me about the logic behind the sand armor is that it realistically wouldn't protect him from that much head trauma, regardless of the amount of cushion you have around the head if the impact is great enough you're still going to get a severe concussion no matter what. In American Football the helmets are so thick and padded you'd think head trauma would never be an issue but countless athletes are retiring with unbelievably severe CTE. I don't care how strong that sand armor supposedly is, if you eat one shot from a 5th gate released Rock Lee and you're *_guaranteed_* to walk away half retarded. And that's being generous

I really like this power up because it looks at least a bit realistic compared to most of others from any anime. Maybe not as "hype" as MHA or DB but this is good in a different way imo.
