In countries that chronically experience high inflation like Turkey and Russia people will buy USD and Euro just to protect their savings. Also if you want to invest in foreign stocks, many ETFs are hedged against FX risk.

We basically operate on a "dual currency" system, where everyday transactions are done I pesos, but valuations are done in US dollars, highly correlating the inflation and exchange rates.
I remember looking into forex trading about 10 years ago, and the leverage that they use is just nuts. Leverage of 1:100 and 1:200 are incredibly common.

I have 35% of my capital invstments in an IRA, 25% in index funds, and the balance spread across other investment accts, in cumulative of over $ 6M. I receive income from my rental properties too. Zero debt and all is going accordingly.
Living below ones means & investing is difficult but it's necessary. I've made lots of money mistakes in the past but I don’t regret it as I've learnt from them. Now I’m just focusing on the s&p 500 and waiting for a few years.
In my case Klaus Cassius has helped me to do that proficiently. I'm not a guru so I don't really have fascinating strategies. I work and my consultant does the rest.
Sounds like the risk reward is worse than trading stocks. In the long term, all fiat currencies are sinking ships. In your example, when you made $350 on the USD/CAD trade, the USD devalued for a reason, so by the time you sell, you can potentially afford less things with $1350 than you did a year ago with $1000. That's a very extreme and unlikely scenario, but you get the point. All central banks are printing like crazy this year, so you're certainly going to lose if you remain long be it USD, EUR, CAD, etc. You better trade like a pro so you can stay ahead of inflation. See inflation works against you if you hold fiat currencies but it's actually neutral or even beneficial if you hold stocks. But to each his own I guess
I understand in the macroeconomic sense fx has important job to fulfill. My issue with fx as a retail traders is that there is not a centralized exchange, and that is the main reason why there are so many abnormalities in the fx investing world. If someone wants to do fx is safer to do futures there are even fx contracts with all the principal pairs but managed by a centralized exchange.

I buy Euro annd use Euro to buy dollars for my US stocks portfolio. When the pandemic started I lost 9-10% of my money as the Euro stayed at 4.8 (my currency) and the dollar fell from 4.5 to 4.1 (around 9%). Bye bye couple hundered dollars :(((
If you live in poor/turbulent country its not a bad idea to have some cash reserves in dollars or euro depending on where you live if you need to flee or to protect against very high inflation. You know before the government limits you from exchanging your local currency.
Sir you left out going to your bank where you have a checking account, and ask your banker to switch it. When you want to redeem take the foreign currency back, and deposit. Your local bank is a safe exchange that isn't going to run away with your money.
I left out while the person is in the bank ask your banker to talk. This is how I began FX. My bank was there to hold my hand a bit. When I want to redeem for domestic currency that I use day/day I simply brought the cash back, and deposited at the exchange rate that day. Bank charge fees. Mine was around 6% Some more some less.

In any country with volatile currency, foreign ones, mostly USD and sometimes EUR, are the most available way of investing for people with relatively small amounts of money. My "financial cushion" is mostly USD and EUR with only 10% being in my country's currency. So when I see americans talking about how the inflation destroys their savings I often cry on the inside.
That's why you should not hold USD as your cash lol. To this point it had an aproximative 7% inflation and more inflation is on its way. Compare that to EUR that had a 0.3%...
Dude, it isn't have that simple. Population and GDP go up while money supply stays the same, then DEFLATION will occur. Like it did when Grant was President because there was not enough gold mined to keep up with the growth of the US, so unlimited silver minting occurred.

I got really good at forex after blowing out my account several times. Eventually I decided to take my strategy to crypto without leverage and my strategies worked. My trading strategy wasn't bad, it's just that the leverage will autoliquidated you so you cant HODL through a dip that destroys your equity. But on crypto I can buy, HODL a dip of any magnitude and wait to sell for a profit, even if it is several years.

The goal for MOST people is not to "earn money" but rather to have hedges against various currency risks and further diversify their portfolios. You'd need to be using HFT algos in order to even consider making consistent returns on FX trading alone.

Yeah that's a good path. You should focus on a good ETF of the s&p 500, relax back and watch it compound within the years.
