5 Days of reserve on the Boeing 777

- A bit of a different kind a video. I wanted to show how I go from being on reserve to getting a trip and kinda how that works. I can not go into extreme detail due to airline rules and reserve is different at every airline.
This is the only channel really talking about being reserve (downsides etc.). Dudes like the one rhyming with Mwayne Sartin always portray the career as something continuously exciting and positive, when the reality is much different. Love that about your channel
Another great vid. I wanted to be an airline pilot when I was a kid, gave it up for the engineering side instead. Now I live my old dream vicariously through your vids and msfs2020. Thank you!
I have 2 teenage daughters who want to become a commercial pilot. I love your videos because they give me an insight of what my daughter’s life will look like. Thank you!
There's a severe lack of women pilots. Highly recommend having them look into the Women in Aviation organization
I appreciate your honesty and transparency about the industry. A new subscriber to your channel. Well, I'm 50....is it too late to get my training and get picked up by at least a regional?@@geekontheflightdeck
Sorry for extreme delay. I hate the comment system on RUclips. It’s late but you can still easily retire a senior RJ Captain or Junior mainline First Officer maybe Junior Captain
@@geekontheflightdeck thank you for responding! Appreciated.
Thank you so much for this pilot perspective. It’s interesting seeing this side of reserve pilot life as it’s not documented as well in other channels. It really highlights everything! This is some great work
I live in SA and love seeing the AA 777s out doing touch and go on test flights.
Another great video Darren! As a lowly private pilot I love following your commercial adventures!
Love your videos keep the good work thank you for posting
Thank you. The longer these videos get the longer they take to make. I appreciate the comments.
I just want to call out how weirdly insightful your videos are. There is so much aviation content on RUclips including 747 captains that I watch and this is one of only two channels that I feel have given me a real glimpse into behind the scenes at an airline. The mechanics of being a captain. As a PPL(H) who’s thought about doing an ATPL or just finishing my fixed wing PPL and is currently a software guy full time hesitant to move away from my high salary for something more fun I have really enjoyed the detail and really made me reconsider aviation as a career. I grew up dreaming of flying, got a PPL(H) in 2009 and backed out as pay was unlivable
It’s funny that the two most insightful behind the scenes airline RUclips channels are both AA. I have BA equivalent of Concierge Key but I think I’ll give AA a try on my next LHR-JFK
Thank you. Get a ride on the 300 First Class before it goes away.
Will do!
ooh first comment! well great job Darren! This was an awesome video. From someone who works on the flight training side of things it’s so awesome to see the other side of how it all plays out on the line. Keep up the great work!
Hey thank you!
Really enjoying your videos Darren, thank you. Looks like Kirkland Club Terminal A DFW if I am not mistaken ?
So you have wanted to go anywhere but London for a while yet you mentioned what a great experience it was with Immigration at LHR, short walk and purser doing all the paperwork etc and bus to hotel. How did that compare with Madrid?? Happy Father’s Day.
Amazing video, I'm glad to be able to see your content again after I got off TikTok I saw almost non of your content but glad to see you doing well and making amazing RUclips videos. Keep up the great work.
Thank you. I should have switched here a long time ago. Landscape is much easier to edit in.
I always love your videos. Also, I want that "Kirkland" polo. Hopefully it's available to the public.
It was in May. I think they only sell them right before Pride month via an employer resource group website.
Another great video. You Texans are crazy. 91 is hot as heck for me. haha
Replacing an entire IRS unit instead of switching planes is wild
The downline impact swapping airplanes is something that is evaluated. Sending this flight on time or less delayed may be the least impactful than just eating this one. What do you think happens to the flight that got switched if that's what they decide to do?
Do the hotels guarantee early check-in? Have you ever gotten to a hotel and your room is "not ready?"
Love the videos!
Keep up the great work!
🎉
Great question. It's all in the contract between hotel and airline. We arrive when we arrive and if it's before official check in time we still get our keys. We also check out whenever the flight leaves. Every now and then rooms aren't ready but I've never waited more than 20 minutes. I've heard stories in the distant past that crews overseas waited 90 minutes for their rooms.
Enjoyed the video! PS, like the Abe Froman shirt, too!😂
Thanks for knowing who that is. I think most young people have no idea. Ha
@geekontheflightdeck yup, I was in high school back then!
Great content. As an aspiring aa pilot can you explain a bit more about your studiying and your preparation for important flight and sim sessions. How do you deal with the crm part of the job? Hands down mythe top rated favourite pilot content👍🎉
Thank you. I’m not allowed to discuss anything directly related to my airline , documents and materials made by my airline or anything specific to training sorry.
Nice channel. Nice videos.
Cool video! Question, shouldn't the Captain have priority over the better seat on that deadhead? Isn't it seniority based? Cheers
Thank you. Not seniority based here. Time of check in.
2:02 If Kirkland doesn’t provide hotel or transportation, than how do commuter pilots exist/ work for Kirkland. Is it because they have different contracts/rules for in base versus commuter pilots?
They bid a commutable schedule or buy hotels or a crashpad. No major airlines provide hotels or transportation in the United States. Some regionals do or did.
Great video! Thanks
😊 Abe Froman fan ! The sausage King of Chicago !!!
It takes so much to get used to Madrids way of operating, esp taxi ... but there is an idea behind ^^ i assume it :)
Awesome!
I assume flying passengers and landing is the most fun combo., but How would you rank being FO on a ferry flight vs relief on a passenger flight out of curiosity?
There’s much less interaction with passengers on a 777 vs Airbus do actually not that different.
Great video... but you left out the best part...
How much you got compensated...
My pay rate is $286.26/hr so roughly $8000
Your friend was trying to encourage you to switch to Wide Body Domestic but Kirkland Airlines appear to be doing away with all the LAX / MIA, LAX / DFW etc etc as they get more A321 / A321 XLRs. Maybe good you did not switch !
Do you have a specific favorite 77E or 77W or are they all the same? (7LV / N735AT is mine)
I prefer the 300 mostly due to better crew rest areas. Otherwise they are the same.
On Europe flights, are you often relief pilot? How long of flight get relief crews?
Currently often relief pilot. Anything over 9 hours requires a relief pilot
@@geekontheflightdeck thank you.
How did you get first and captain got economy?
It’s check in time and seats being open. I checked in before him. Only one first class seat was open.
@@geekontheflightdeck ah I figured captains would take priority haha but that is kind of nice
Why are you not flying to get your 100 hours after IOE instead of getting stuck being the IRO? Or did I miss something?
It’s complicated.
what would you do the last two days if you were used the first three of five days as an RP if your home is a 4 hours flight from your base?
For long call that’s an easy go home. I get 12 hours to report
Darren as a 777 pilot do you prefer flying the 77-200er or 777-300er?
I don’t have enough but in seat time yet
Randomned with KCM? What's the point?
I don’t discuss security stuff. There is a point
Sir : What college education are you required to be a FO and then to become a Captain ??????
None. There’s no college requirement for either
How was the student pilot not qualified to fly? I thought based on the training, you were qualified the first time you flew?
It’s standard as we get a check ride in a simulator. Still have to fly the real plane.
Abe Froman shirt hahahahahahha love it
I am a person that can sleep when it’s bumpy, I actually sleep better when there’s a bit of turbulence 😅
isn't Spanish an official aviation ATC language accepted by ICAO?
Where is that documented?
On a french pilot's vlog also said french as well but not documented.
How can you not like Chocolate?
I’m a regular sugar person. Nerds and sour candy
