- We have all seen a ton of different Android phones, iPhones but this phone is different. This is a phone with a very unique design, upgradeability matching laptops and a different OS altogether.
We show you the Purism Librem 5 aka the Linux phone, which has some really interesting privacy features that a lot of other makers should take inspiration from.

Balance is needed, between privacy and usability. Nothing can be ideal.
You mean Nothing Phone?
Nothing stops you from sandboxing android apps on this using waydroid
Takes some setup but it's doable

Nah bro. Nothing isn't good cuz it runs android 😂and it's unreliable
if took FOUR years JUST TO DELIVER, imagine how good is the customer service
Mobile service after we die 💀💀
😅
the customer service is actually incredible. The folks at purism are very active and friendly and are active participants of the Linux community!
@@anirbandutta6913they are not even giving refund.. how can you it's good customer service
here before this blows up!
Beebom, out of everything on RUclips today, has surprisingly found a niche which I'm really liking. Keep doing what you do guys!
What is the niche according to u , which u r saying? Pls share❤
I was shocked when I saw this video on my feed lmao
Mainstream Indian mobile youtuber is talking about linux on mobile... not even ubuntu touch, this is straight up phosh/gnome mobile
Agree
Exactly 💯
Mrwhosetheboss done a better Job a couple of years back
He said "6 months turned to 4 years" so easily. Hats off
😂 Some time I think I'm the only one worried about Tardy and schedule , Accountability. Imagine spending $ 1,299 in advance and hoping it will delivered in 4 years. 😮 My friend have lots of patience
@@AMAZINGGRACEMARATHIit was $799 back in the day but still, crazy stuff
The 4 years had multiple reasons though. First of all nobody expected COVID to happen. Additionally they could not switch out any important hardware parts they selected to build it because they were also set to implement open-source drivers and firmware for them as well as guaranteeing customers firmware support. Then another problem was that the SoC they use for the device gets used in the automobile industry as well. So they pretty much run straight into heavy supply chain issues.
Gnome Posh Shell!
More Linux phones please.
You guys had the patience to wait for 4 yrs, hats off to you guys
Kudos for trying this! I hope that this phone is a harbinger of good things to come from the Linux world to the smartphone world.
one of things that companies should consider in their phones is selfie camera cover slider. like some Lenovo laptops.
That feels a little redundant on this one :p
@@Vancha112true, the camera doesn't even get eletric current when the switch is turned off lol
@@softwarelivre2389 right ^^
Hardware switches are definitely better. You can even save up battery life, turning things off and the software looses signal immediately.
If you are a Linux user like me , You might have noticed it's basically a mobile version of Gnome Shell running on top of a pure os which is based on Debian
That is Phosh shell, beboom should have tried gnome mobile os
Yup PMOS
The plan is to switch from Phosh to GNOME in the future, I assume. Currently Phosh is still favorable over GNOME shell, even with its mobile layout patches.
You guys are just killing it
So I do have the same device. What I ended up doing is that I found ways to sideload my android apps. While still not the best solution, it is definitely a step in the right direction. As of now, you’re having to choose between privacy and convenience.
Hey Beebom,
Your content is always informative and well-researched, making it a go-to source for tech enthusiasts like myself. Keep up the fantastic work! 😊😊
This phone is amazing, ngl the specs require some upgrades but not bad for an average phone user
Brands can get inspiration from fairphone as well.
This is the type of phone a SPY/secret agent would use in movies😂😂
yes!
If there is no features in the phone then there will be no privacy issues too. That's a true smartphone 😂
Well, it can make calls, SMS, use calculator and flashlight. Access the web and play some games. It will get better some day, I hope so.
@@softwarelivre2389 It can do a lot more than that. It can pretty much do whatever a Linux desktop can do. The hardware specs just get in between at times.
@@thejackimonster9689 it was a joke, my friend. The main problem is not even the hardware, but the lack of development still
@@softwarelivre2389 Which lack of development? I got new kernel updates today. I can run latest version of any flatpak app easily.
Pretty much every week I can update some piece of software on it, since you have access to rolling release app cycles and Purism still does active development on their end just with less frequent updates.
The upgradeability feautres are soo much needed in todays phone ❤😍
But yes it would hamper the IP Rating and slimness of the phone
When everyday is leg day... and some nights are leg day, too!!
It seems like the OS (the Linux distribution used) here is based on the Gnome desktop environment because all the apps here are the gnome apps with just a mobile responsive UI but the implementation could be much better. It feels like they have taken Gnome and tried to patch it to fit inside a phone.
Gnome itself trying to port to mobile form factor with libadwita and libhandy, actually this is Phosh shell.. gnome is developing their own mobile os named as gnome os mobile and that looks good you can find that on RUclips
The user interface (phone shell) is called Phosh. There is also a official GNOME Shell Mobile which is pretty different. There is also KDE Plasma Mobile
There is cheaper and better alternative is PinePhone build by pine64 supports many other Linux Distros even the sailfish OS which is pretty dope. And btw Purism use Gnome as a desktop environment for their phonre maybe kde or xfce4 will work faster.
Props to your patience. I can't wait even 1 year
That mobile and apps interface reminds of HTC mobile we used to have in my childhood. It runs on Kitkat(maybe Android 4 then)
One doesn't need to be paranoid to stay secure, security is an outcome of being wise.
Please do a video on fairphone
2:33 bhai ye hacker hai, hacker hacker hacker, hacker hai bhai ye hacker hai

So, are you able to replace the WIFI & Bluetooth sensors with ones fit for computers, or do you have to order them?
Its laptop’s wifi card.
People who wants absolutely best privacy , they should go with graphene os . So they can use the device unlike pure unusable phone.
Nothing stops you from loading waydroid to run android apps on this
It'll not perform the same way but it's pretty good on something like a pinephone or an android first phone running linux mobile like pmOS or droidian
I generally watch many tech RUclipsrs. But beebom tops my priority list
A video on Fairphone 5 would be awesome 💯
Swappable Bluetooth wifi and modem is my favourite. I wish every phone had this
I am planning on buying OnePlus 11 on Great Indian sale (sept) will there be any offers... & is it the best deal at that price!!!
If we are talking about privacy here can you get your hands on Samsung's quantum phones for review? that would be interesting to see.
that's gnome-shell
i would suggest use feature phone for ultimate security... 😂
Looking for Beebom to do a review of the Fairphone
What about import duties, can you please tell something about that? And Can you please check volla phones. I want try it but not sure about the import and other charges,
Need this kind of a phone in future woth some amazing updates
Apps which is asking to access all management of files, is this a threat as without giving that permission it cannot be used. As I can see file manager, gallery all has the access.. Pls elaborate
That's the TruePrivacy advantage. Unlike Apple, where you can have a conversation about any product with someone in your home or office and suddenly start receiving ads for it.
Price ? 5g ?
That is a linux distro with gnome on it lol nice
Bootloader unlock krne ka option dede toh postmaster os jaisa kuch use kr k Privacy control kr kar sakte hai.. Pehle asaan tha but ab muskil hai. Vivo oppo k toh namumkin ho gye bootloader unlock krna
Privacy is a Myth. 😅
Agreed
So if by any chance i join RAW and become paranoid towards the end of my life and decide to live on some remote mountain, i know which phone to use . Thanks Beebom🙂
i like mention about the ubuntu touch so called linux os for the smartphone
Don't know whether Beebom is making this video out of ecstasy or frustration after getting the phone after 4 years
thats gnome desktop environment
Ordered one today🎉, wait for my review in 2027. Fingers crossed 🤞
Definitely useful for storing por-
You should keep teleprompter in line of camera.
For Linux based phone processor architecture is very important. For example, x64 architecture would be fabulous even if rest of the specs is poor.
The phone shape resembles a lot like the Palm LIfedrive.
Seems fun to use but there's no way anyone can daily drive it. Maybe if it had a decent chip you could hook it to a monitor and use it as a Linux pc.
It is not exactly for daily uses, but it is the first step
phone so slow even hacking and getting through will take 4 years, that's the security XD
Microphone kill switch would be a great addition..
You mean separate switches for camera and microphone? Because the switch shutting off the camera will also disable the microphone.
Nice video, please review "Fair phone"
Isse acha toh kuch acha hardware wala secondary phone lelu jisme sim card nikalne par waise bhi privacy ho jata hai
Trying flashing Android rom on this phone and make a 2nd part on it.
can't we install apps from terminal? ?
I would love the kill switchs
20W PD charging is impressive rest specifications are boring.
TFT Display
Processor
Etc
Nice Video, liked something unusual. Appreciate.
The applications on it being open-source isn't even that impressive. You can get similar restrictions with FOSS Android ROMs like GrapheneOS which even go further with security overall. However PureOS provides you with open-source firmware and drivers for close to every piece of the hardware. It's pretty much impossible to get that with any Android device because hardware vendors lock down their firmware so heavily. So running a FOSS version of Android might come with limitations that you can't use your camera or some other sensors at all.
The Librem 5 gives you a pretty reasonable option in that case already. It could be more secure when it comes to multiple attack vectors. But in terms of privacy it might be the best option available. So hopefully Purism can continue with their project and make a further iteration addressing the shortcomings in terms of specs.
ON DEMAND: Budget IEM Battery/Bluetooth Adaptors
At this stage of time , I am ready to use a daily driver
Beebom channel is one of the very few Tech channel I follow now a days, Every Good level of production & Neat presentation of video 👍.
As a Indian channel it's pretty Good for atleast to show Other country citizens while remaining Desi channels are busy in cringe jokes, Pani Puri language gibberish & awful Quality.
Well Android runs on Linux Kernel so technically all Androids are Linux Phones. And Beebom has some great Linux enthusiasts in their team i dont see their inputs in this video.
Android usually comes with big limitations though. The typical Android you get out of the box, isn't rooted. If you want to install whatever you want, you need to tinker with adb, developer settings or some custom FOSS store apps. You can't easily develop apps on your Android device while PureOS gives you tools like git, ssh, gcc and more from its repository. It's effectively a Linux desktop in the palm of your hands.
This phone is going to be popular among the professional and celebs. .they had just work on design .
4 years wait for a 4 minute video.
If someone is looking for that much privacy it is better to use a feature phone without all those sensors (camera, wifi, bt etc)
just one question if you can't do anything on this phone then what the hell they are protecting in name of privacy 😂😂
You can do quite a lot. You currently just need to tinker a bit getting things working depending on what you want to do. For example I have no issues using Signal and Telegram on it. Listening to music is totally fine. But you can also use it to enter your home server from terminal and reconfiguring it via ssh. Theoretically even some Android apps run via a compatibility layer on it. So it's effectively a Linux desktop controlled via touch screen.
If privacy is important, getting a feature phone would be a better option than buying this. After all, there are practically no third party apps in both, but a feature phone would be way too cheaper.
Is there is a phone in India with satellite calling feature?
Bro please do a video about this
A 2023 version running Android with the hardware capabilities would be great...
But it is too much to ask for ...
Pinephone?
Phone arrived after 4years 🤔 modular components toh 2yr baad deliver honge than
This is literally gnome on a phone
Why is the audio quality weird in this vid?
Now you guys need to make a video about the Pinephone or the Pinephone Pro
Oh and please put "Librem 5" or something like that in the title so we know what device it is when we search for it. I'm afraid to not find this video again when I try to send it to my friends.
Bluetooth 5.3 was released in July 2021. So how does that 2019 phone have it?
Have you missed the whole part about modularity? :P
Bro can look at the camera and read the script at the same time 💀
that does not seem linux based, rather a literal mobile view of GNOME shell as it is!
It is running gnome in an implementation known as phosh and anything with the linux kernel is linux based so yes it is.
"this feels like a phone from 2019" you did order it in 2019 so
I like beebom notebook where I can buy this
Android is a linux based os aswell
How can i get this hands on ??
Good video.
It isn't linux based, it really seems like Ubuntu 18...if we'd wanted to upgrade in phone is certainly not the wifi or Bluetooth but 'Camera' and 'Screen' 😊
We don’t need hardware kill switches if the OS doesn’t allow apps to access cam and mic in the background and let’s us disable background checks for location etc.
Unless you work in.. military maybe?
Depends... The OS does not come with a permission model like Android. So in case you want to run some third-party software which you don't fully trust, it's very easy to restrict that. Also you don't need to trust the OS in all cases. After all even Android could have an unknown vulnerability which potentially leaks access to your camera or microphone. In such a case a hardware switch would still restrict an attacker.
Also in some countries you want to make sure not being tracked at all cost, even as civilian (for example during some protests). In such a case you can kill base band modem and wifi modem completely. So it's not possible to track you via your phone. But you will still have access to some functionality of your phone.
Bro made video to cover the device cost
Graphene os is also an option.
Man the OS looks like Fedora 38.
This is a phone that only Ethan Hunt would use.
The phone is a privacy king bcuz it don't have access to popular apps 😅
Why not do something similar with pinephonepro and multiple linux mobile os
i believe the software is based on gnome on this one
not enough privacy tho as they pledge
Why dont you ever look directly at the camera?
Where to Buy it from??
If you have to specify why you bought a product usually means it's a bad product
Hay bro use "solarin" phone which now used the security personnel... The world's most powerful security phone.
Best English pronunciation among Indian tech channel ❤
For some reason, the video had deep fried voice.
Well said
