learned so much from this series, got my first ever car as a subie and it was not loved. trying to fix it up and these videos help alot. learned alot and still got alot more to learn.
With the AOS coolant hoses running to/from the throttle body, they make the TMIC even more difficult to put on since the hoses go under the coupler and tend to push the coupler up and the intercooler support bracket is also in the way (the old Perrin AOS I have is this way as well). For consideration... I got a cheap (real cheap) catch can and bolted it to one of the unused threaded holes on the transmission (on the driver’s side on the 5 speed) and ran the drain hose from the AOS to it. One less hose going to the block. Don’t need to empty the catch can often (could probably do it once a year if I wanted to).
@@Smeedia thanks, man. It kinda found me. I took it as destiny and jumped on in. Had been wanting a hatch WRX for a while, but, wasn't actively looking. Stopped at local dealer to glance at a 2016 on the front row. Didn't want to put that much into it. Got in my vehicle to leave and saw this girl on the back row. L.s.s. a week later she was mine. An easier way to install the TMIC is by taking off the right support bracket. Removing the support bracket gives you more wiggle room to slide it in. Try it out next time. Promise you that it would take you less than 10 minutes !
I had to do all of this to my old WRX that I made into an STi. The only original part that's on my car is the AC unit now. I even had to fix some wiring on the harness too. I still have to swap my rack and pinion and chase an issue with my passenger side ABS tone ring. 2 hours to put the top mount on? I don't think it's ever taken me longer than 5 minutes. That's crazy
Never put on an STi tmic. The WRX goes off and back on in 10 mins... but it bolts right to the turbo housing. Obviously, not a good design if its coming off a lot and has aluminum threads, so maybe the STi is worth the silicon struggle. I second the motion for black hoses and couplers. 🤙
Okay so I got a Subaru tech question for ya, I've heard so many different answers from so many different people and I wanna hear your thoughts. So on the fa20 platform a super common mod is the boomba bpv. It's a super stiff spring, and you get surge with it. The thing is it sounds very very different from any other kind of surge. It is a very light whispy sound, and it lasts maybe half a second if that. Compare that to basically any other car where it is a very defined sound, than can sometimes last multiple seconds. I've been trying to find why it is so different, and I've heard people say it's the twin scroll, and the elh, I've also heard it's the longer intake, and then a common one is that "it's a small turbo so there is no momentum). I just want to get to the bottom of this, but it's been months if the same answers with no explanation on anything
The header nor the scroll setting have an effect on the BPV sound. A stiffer string wouldn't produce a sound either. I can't say definitely however I could see that such a stiff spring could result in a small amount of compressor surge. Because small amounts of pressure won't open the valve thr air had to go somewhere. Had to look up a video on the sound you were referring too
I think you are supposed to trim to size the Grimspeed TMIC elbow that goes to the turbo, not sure if you did that. Could make it easier to get on. I have the same setup, but with OEM aluminium Y. Can usually get it on easily by first attaching the throttle body coupler to the throttle body, but not yet to the TMIC. Then get the turbo coupler on without it folding into the inside of the turbo (poking a screwdriver through to push the bottom of the couple over can help). After that it is all quick and easy. I have the same Perrin inlet. Do you find that its a tiny bit too long? Does your PCV sensor out of the inlet rub against the manifold? Mine doesn't quite sit right, was thinking about trimming it a bit. Not sure if its just my setup, or how the inlet is.
No issues with thr turbo inlet and the sensor, I have noticed on the older models the tiebo Inlet is much more of a tight fit. I trimmed thr hoses for thr Y pipe they just never want to go back on 😅😅
Yeah agreed. Looking forward to seeing this finally come together! Again, great content, none of this chatting for the first 20 minutes and multiple video angles of the car only to give 2 minutes of repairs towards the end like other channels.

Even with the cam lock tool I was still having trouble with tension, and it may have taken 50 tries to slide the belt onto the last gear and NOT be a tooth off. Highly suggest some sort of small mirror. I was going to do a cyl 4 mod and instead I ended up with a cut heater hose and a coupler from autozone. You're a goddamn wizard the way ypu can tighten that fitting onto the block. Do you take off whatever tf exactly that suspension part is directly in the way of the line of the socket extension? Either way, I got cuts and bruises down my arms, back is jacked up and I've been taking muscle relaxers. I'll stick to MMA... 🤣
