I love their products too and I agree… I’ll wait for a sale. I already purchased their latest grinder, studio edition kettle, & Carter Cold tumbler this year. 😂 Btw, excellent review, Kyle!
It’s their innovation. Appreciate the r&d and design that goes into the final product. I’m willing to pay more, just like I did with the pearl and lunar.
Thank you so much for sharing our Katze! In addition to Aries, we'll continue to develop even more super cool stuff that helps with the brewing workflow ! Hope everyone can keep following us!
Solid review! Fellow frustrates me as they choose to prioritize aesthetics over function. They're clearly intentional about what they do, but I wish it were a bit more thought out. Another good analogy would be a scale for barista like a scale for a baker.
Fellow is a form>function company. I love my kettle but the spartan features can be a deal breaker. I’m gonna pass on this scale and stick with my acaia. Great review as always man.
It's a scale. It weighs stuff which is all the function required of a scale...And it does more too. Where's the "form>function" part? And how is that "spartan features" when it's the opposite of Spartan?
cost is way too much for what features it offer, I think one of the best parts about the Acaia scale is their upside down method, liquid spillage and cleaning it are much easier without any physical blockage, this looks a handful to clean tbh. Also the cost here is just astronomical, the only major difference is the brew assist but this is more of just a very basic calculator feature, you could get a dollar calculator, or simply write down your favorite ratios and dosage and never need to use the brew assist. If this was 120 or less I think a lot of people would find it more tolerable but at the current price, hard pass.
For a scale in that price range it looks pretty cheap. Especially the textured plastic and the wobbly knob. In my experience coffee making is always a mess and this one does not look very simple to clean.
This scale doesn't do justice to Fellow's track record of elegance in product designing. It looks like a weird cross between the base of the Stagg and those really cheap round-topped kitchen scales. And although the brew assist feature is really nice, especially because of how easy it is to adjust ratios from the dial, for $185, I don't think it's worth it.
Maybe, if honest I think this is the nicer scales I’ve used for elegance outside of the knob. Maybe videos don’t do justice? Or maybe it’s a personal preference.
@@KyleRowsell I think all your videos do justice to the features of the reviewed products, including this one (great job, by the way!). But yes, however great the video may be, hands-on experience is what it is... And in all fairness, I guess I would probably love the brew assist feature and the fast responsiveness of the scale. Just not a fan of the design and the price.
The Brewista Ratio has that same functionality and it is like $90 cheaper. I like Fellow Products, I have an ODE Gen2 and my favorite flat bottom brewer is the Stagg, but this product looks like "let's see if we can take the money from the people that already bought our other products"
"Tamp" the like button. That's unique and I like it lol. Our little social media espresso right here on youtube XD. Appreciate the review as always Kyle. Cheers.
It looks really nice but is kind of big. I want something small that I can use for both espresso and pourover, but this thing might have trouble fitting into spots underneath espresso machines.
Right now I’m brewing two coffees from local roasters De Fer (flower show spring blend - Ethiopia and Burundi) and Ghost Coffee Collab (washed SL28/SL34). I’m also brewing a Guatemalan aged in amburana barrels from Bold Beanzz
I’ve started using the fellows Tuesday coffee offering, latest was an April Ethiopian, really good. Waiting for my timemore 078 to weigh on my $20 scale.
Fellow is the Apple of filter coffee. They have an attractive ecosystem around filter coffee and it’s priced at a premium. People that want to buy into that ecosystem understand they are paying a premium.
Although the brew mode is nice, it is just a calculation, as a feature i would not rank it to high. I think flow rate would be way more interesting to have because you can use it to communicate pouring speed between people or recipes. Some timemore scales have this. Flowrate you can calculate as well, but is hard to do in real time when you are pouring
You know, I have a Pearl, a Lunar (and a Pyxis, which isn’t “smart,” but has some workflow modes) and I’ve never used any of the connected “smart” features. While I think all of these scales are silly expensive (I have a couple Black Mirrors, as well, which is what I would recommend for most), I think Fellow was smart on their feature set. But wobbly knobs. Why do Fellow knobs all wobble?
I am brewing Baragwi Kianjiru from September Coffee with Lance's ultimate pourover technique and it's awesome. Btw when shipping to Europe you need to put the value of the items (the coffee) on the package or so and also do not forget to subtract the discount if there was any. Also what is your water chemistry in September HQ? Greetings from Austria

@@KyleRowsell I would expect it to be well sealed but my concern is more around actually cleaning it. The Pearl is a flat glass surface easy to simply wipe off while this scale has all sorts of nooks and crannies.
I’ve been wanting a new scale but I just wish this one was smaller so I could use it for espresso as well. Maybe in the future 😅 Enjoying some medium-dark Colombia Inzá Vereda today, roasted by my company Stay Goldman. Apples, honey, cinnamon, slight chocolate finish
Finally splurge big money on this premium scale! I love Fellow designs in their coffee gears! But what strikes me the most is the design totally reminds me of the OG PlayStation! The brew assist is a huge seller!
$185 is a high price for a scale which is made from cheap looking plastic mostly like this Fellow Tally. When I first saw images of this product several weeks ago floating around on Instagram, I thought it would be made out of metal mostly. The wobly knob is a no-go & reminds me of my $35 Beurer KS-36...
Iv had two different Ethiopia Moramora's from two different local roasters back to back in my espresso. One was labeled Geisha but I'm not 100% certain about the variety, research is needed.
Great video! I especially liked the cutying board illustration, that'a a good way of putting it! One of my groomsmen has a $300 cutting board which always seemed excessive but he swears by it! Seems like a cool scale but I'll stick with my Timemore Black Mirror
The brew assist feature is cool but for the price it should be able to do more… The size of it most likely limits it to just pour over. I think any scale in this price range should be able to do espresso as well. Also no flow rate? I have other fellow products but this seems like a miss
Products like this kinda annoy me. I'm actually on the hunt for some new scales for our coffee shop. Hope this is just the first product, cause this really looks like a "home use only" device at a high premium price. What I want for that kind of price is to know is how does it handle when wet, when exposed to moisture all day long, when working next to a steam wand with higher temperatures (cause Acaia scales are notoriously shit for working next to damp and high temperature sources and they show false measurements), how well does it fare after being dropped off the counter a couple of times, how good is the warranty and spare parts supply, how well does it stick to the counter so it's more difficult to knock off, why is there an exposed USB-C port at the back with no cover just waiting to be damaged by a little spilled coffee? Fellow! That's the stuff I want from a set of scales, if you use the word "PRO" in the name, make sure it's suitable for actual professionals who will use this device hundreds and hundreds of times every single day!
Great video but was hoping to hear about the battery life because my lunar has great battery life i even use it for single cup pour overs. How well scales maintain their charge even when not used is also very important to some consumers. Nothing worse than getting back from vacation and realize you need to charge your scale before you can make some coffee.
I bought this because it was a no brainer as a discount when bundled with the Ode Gen 2, and I'm Type A and like all my stuff to match, but it irritates the hell out of me that you can't have it auto-time with Timer mode. They force users into Brew Assist for all the functionality, which is obnoxious for a scale MSRPd over $150. Being forced into Brew Assist forces a new mindset in workflow if you're coming from a scale like Timemore wherein you simply Dump Grounds > Tare > Auto Start because you know exactly how much water you plan to use, but if you skip the step within Brew Assist where it's the complete inverse of Tare > Dump Grounds > Start, the function is rendered useless and there's no 'undoing' it. For less than $100 you can go with Timemore and get flow rate and auto start. With Fellow you're just paying a premium for aesthetic and a trademarked phrase: Brew Assist.
Thanks for the review, it really helps my buying decisions: $180 and it doesn't have flow rate, but it does have the world's most limited pocket calculator? Pffft.
"The scale to the barista is the cutting board to the chef." Well said! I'll be honest, $185 is steep but I've been brewing for 10+ years at home using the same scale and I was stoked to see this scale. The amount of times I've had to do mental math (when I didn't have my phone on me) to calculate the grams of water lol. You're definitely paying a premium but at least it looks sleek.

Jolly bean roaster's recession proof banger colombian washed geisha through a V60 for what I'm brewing today, super floral and amazing value. All done on my scale.... Which is the budget one in this video's description 😂
I say, get a Timemore and never look back. $185 is a statement-piece price tag and this, for sure, does NOT look like one unlike their Gooseneck, which is a beautiful thing to look at.
I feel like I was waiting for an answer to WHY I should buy it. I watched the whole video and was at the end still waiting for the conclusion. Aside from brew assist, name brand, and looks, why would I buy this? Or is the answer just simply “there are no other reasons”? 😂
This scale is about $95 too expensive IMO. For about the same money, I'd rather get an Acaia or the top end Time More Black Mirror 2 with the built in dripper holder. Both have Bluetooth apps and while they're not the most seamless, it probably adds onto the value. This being branded as Studio edition makes me wonder if we'll see a cheaper variant later though.
Ok so honestly I think this scale is kind of pointless especially at that price. The highlight feature being the addition of a brew ratio. If I'm a beginner (and need help for my ratios), Im not going to have the budget for such a purchase especially when a cheap $20 one is just as good. If I'm a pro, (assuming) ill surely have enough experience to know my brew ratio and so i don't necessarily need it and presumably already have one that is just as good. Secondly around the size. This is on the large size for a lot of scales. Think about the barista's out there and the machines that like to weigh the espresso thats produced. They cannot physically fit this on there and can only just about the size of one mug on there. Thats why the tiny Acaia works so beautifully (albeit also pricey)
Just learnt that if you brew assist 1:42 a video game “jumpy” appears. 🎮
I was just about to ask!
I like fellow's products, but man i really can't justify a coffee-specific scale for $185.

The circular bottom looks like a great match to a Chemex.
Yeah. Very intentional.

Nice product. Nice review. Sadly, likely to be ripped off by other companies soon.

“OOOOOUUUUUT”. Ah Hah! Oh Canada!
Chef's don't use scales and timers? ;) lol
Ha, you missed the point lol
@@KyleRowsell I got it - I was just being a goose. ;)
Great balanced rundown.

Uhhhh i dunno about u guys but i use ratios based off 10g of coffee so the maths isnt so hard that i need a 185 dollar scale
drinking a locally roasted ethiopian from a v60 :)
Looks like an ekg base. They need to make and adapter to use your ekg in to a scale and vice versa. 😂😂😂
That would be very neat ha
