  • This was a plein air oil painting done during a short trip to Florida. In this video I go over how to paint a seascape en plein air using oil paints. Hope the video is helpful for anyone trying to get out there and make sense of what you're seeing.

This is a beautiful painting Patrick. For me painting water in the studio is tough, but plein-air....whew!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing these tips, I learned so much! Waves are incredibly difficult for me but I am enjoying the process of learning to paint them better.

I love painting waves! I also love plein air painting. But for some reason, I've never combined the two... this inspired me to give it a go! Cheers

I agree about fractals. Reminds me of Under the Wave Off Kanagawa aka The Great Wave.

Very well explained!! A video full of useful tips🌿What do you think would be the difference in lighting in different parts of the world, particularly the seascape changing too?

Thanks! I think it’s mostly due to the atmosphere- being in the water generally the atmosphere is a little mistier. Maybe because of salt too

Extraordinarily beautiful! Would you mind sharing your palette? Specifically the blue in the far water- I’m guessing cerulean blue hue (looks like you may have a little phthalo in your cerulean bc of the amped up turquoise blue) rather than cerulean genuine, or maybe it’s a completely different blue? Anyway, one of the best seascapes videos I’ve seen. Thanks for sharing.

      I had ultramarine, cobalt,
viridian and van dyke brown on my palette! Mixing viridian and cobalt gets you very close to cerulean

Beautiful! Yeah, painting waves en plein air is a huge challenge. I came to the conclusion that the only way to really pull it off is to study wave anatomy in the studio.

What do you do with the corners of the painting where the clips are holding the panel in place? Do you cover them up with a specifically sized frame or do you just color match paint over them later?

What size canvas would you recommend for someone just getting started plein air painting?

I find 9x12’s to be really convenient, but maybe consider 5x7’s. Working small helps you get a lot of reps in, important for beginners!
