Making the "games" single player only was probably the smartest decision they could have made. In Decentraland the double-digit daily playercounts made it inescapably obvious that nobody wants "the metaverse," but Sandbox can hide that by using singleplayer modes.
I tried decentraland a couple days after Folding Ideas made his video. I figured at least people would have tried it or it would be more active after hundreds of thousands/millions watched that video. The player count was actually lower than what he said in the video, it was completely dead. Never saw a single other player and a lot of the places he was referencing had shut down or didn't exist anymore xD

Great video. The Sandbox is bullshit from start to finish. It took me quite some time to come to this conclusion, even tough, it would have been an obvious thing right away. (south China morning post wtf...) They made some interesting promises that sounded very appealing, especially to creators. The only fun thing in The Sandbox is the game maker. It's their 'engine' required for building the worlds that should be accessible through the plots of land one day. It's a little bit like playing Lego and you can easily spend hours in it (ignoring the many glitches). Actually, it's not even an engine; it's more like a game itself created with Unity. However, stay away from this stuff people! Keep up the good work. Best, Ben
They don't have a billion dollars though. From what you showed that is just the market cap, there is probably very little actual liquidity. Trying to cash out will just crash the price and that market cap will disappear.
Right, and that same logic can be applied to pretty much any crypto when people say it's "worth $xxx". So certainly there would be not nearly enough liquidity to exit that position. However, and I should've included this in the video, they have actually raised a number well over $500M (as far as I could find, I'm sure they've received more in private funding) in cash, not crypto, from other investment firms such as SoftBank. So they might actually have access to almost $1B in real money in addition to whatever they can get for their funny money, which is even crazier to think about.

Something that stands out to me is how there's no like... graphical consistency. The smooth HUD (which takes up way too much of the screen and is very distracting, not to mention hard to read due to the translucent background) doesn't match the voxel pixel artstyle at all. It feels like they came from two different games entirely.

2:35 I used to think most voxel art styles were ugly for this reason as well, until I found out about the Voxel Doom mod. You would think making voxel models using the Doom character sprites as reference would create an incomprehensible mess, but since the mod disables shading on the voxels they actually work very effectively as 3D renditions of the original sprites. While I think the The Sandbox’s presentation is rotten and bland to its core, if they had disabled shading, chosen an alternate to tweening, and got rid of the godawful ambient occlusion the graphics would have been a smidge less ugly.

if meta is gonna call themselves "meta" for going whole hog into VR, then they metaverse has to be VR/AR. Not just a digital game. To each their own, but the one thing I actually like about The Sandbox Metaverse is the art style. I personally love that extra blocky voxel style. I enjoy the game Staxel, which uses a much more pixellated voxel style which I'm a huge fan of and the SBM art style immediately reminded me of that. I was actually surprised when you said you hated the way it looked because I was immediately admiring the style. Just goes to show that everyone is different and has different taste in art.
I know you're referencing it for a joke but Dark Souls ABSOLUTELY holds your hand, to the point you start in an isolated designated unskippable tutorial area with hand-holding help messages literally telling you where to to and what to do... And that's fine, it's good game design. Devs that have no help or tutorials trying to tout that as a feature are just masking their incompetence. Hell even later DS1 teaches you to use environment and to be careful with traps when you meet a dragon in a hidden tutorial.

Right, so I've been getting a stupid amount of adverts for this game. The trailers seem to show it more as a game engine allowing you to make games, never even mentions NFTs. If this is what the game is like...yeah, probably won't be playing this. Though I will say, I don't agree with your assertion that the game looks ugly. I actually quite like the art style, and it actually seems pretty high effort in terms of animations and such. Far better than any other NFT game ever.

I'd actually disagree that roblox's game engine is bad. It's simple enough that even a kid can learn to code in it, and complex enough to do all kinds of absolutely insane stuff-look at Frontlines or Velocity Outlast. Not bad for an engine developed in 2006.

Edit: I also think the environments look infinitely better compared to both of those games, so maybe I'm the odd man out here in thinking that the overall art style for this "game" is really nice. I played The Sandbox mobile game as a kid. I was pretty quirky, but I really liked it, despite how unstable it was. I remember the game crashing a lot, failing to load, and I think I had issues with losing some of my in-game purchases after re-installing the game because it wasn't working. I was ~10yrs old at the time though, so I didn't recognize any of that as huge red flags. Still, it wasn't nearly as blatant of a cash-crab as this one is, there was at least some genuine creativity and fun mechanics for a 2D sandbox game.

i used to play the sandbox evolution game(the little mobile 2d game) and it was fun, sad how it went to this

To each their own, but the one thing I actually like about The Sandbox Metaverse is the art style. I personally love that extra blocky voxel style. I enjoy the game Staxel, which uses a much more pixellated voxel style which I'm a huge fan of and the SBM art style immediately reminded me of that. I was actually surprised when you said you hated the way it looked because I was immediately admiring the style. Just goes to show that everyone is different and has different taste in art.

I know you're referencing it for a joke but Dark Souls ABSOLUTELY holds your hand, to the point you start in an isolated designated unskippable tutorial area with hand-holding help messages literally telling you where to to and what to do... And that's fine, it's good game design. Devs that have no help or tutorials trying to tout that as a feature are just masking their incompetence. Hell even later DS1 teaches you to use environment and to be careful with traps when you meet a dragon in a hidden tutorial.

I found this series a year out, and it probably was funny in the moment, but in clear hindsight, it's flat-out hilarious.

Right, so I've been getting a stupid amount of adverts for this game. The trailers seem to show it more as a game engine allowing you to make games, never even mentions NFTs. If this is what the game is like...yeah, probably won't be playing this.
Though I will say, I don't agree with your assertion that the game looks ugly. I actually quite like the art style, and it actually seems pretty high effort in terms of animations and such. Far better than any other NFT game ever.
Minecraft Java map files are easy to copy and disperse throughout the interwebs.

I'd actually disagree that roblox's game engine is bad. It's simple enough that even a kid can learn to code in it, and complex enough to do all kinds of absolutely insane stuff-look at Frontlines or Velocity Outlast. Not bad for an engine developed in 2006.

If you look at a ROBLOX game made by a proffesional and a non roblox indie game then youd probably prefer the indie game because roblox lacks the ability to crate special abilities and such. Roblox made the hardest things to make in games like physics and you are very limited in general about what you can make

it's so unbelievably disrespectful and also comically ignorant of crypto bros to think a. what they think is gameplay is something gamers would spend our time on, and b. the persistence of paid dlc items that we bitch about endlessly is more important to us than... gameplay
I feel like a goofy goober for finding these avatars infinitely more appealing than the ones from Minecraft and Roblox. I think the Roblox avis are especially ugly and they look like mutated LEGO figurines to me. Still, NFTs and crypto will always be garbage, so I don't feel like a total outsider here.
Edit: I also think the environments look infinitely better compared to both of those games, so maybe I'm the odd man out here in thinking that the overall art style for this "game" is really nice. NFTs and crypto still suck ass though, and they always will.
I played The Sandbox mobile game as a kid. I was pretty quirky, but I really liked it, despite how unstable it was. I remember the game crashing a lot, failing to load, and I think I had issues with losing some of my in-game purchases after re-installing the game because it wasn't working. I was ~10yrs old at the time though, so I didn't recognize any of that as huge red flags. Still, it wasn't nearly as blatant of a cash-crab as this one is, there was at least some genuine creativity and fun mechanics for a 2D sandbox game.
