  • MLB's WORST Losing Streak to Open a Season
The Baltimore Orioles - a team with a storied history, a roster filled with talent, and a city that wore its orange and black heart on its sleeve. As the dawn of the 1988 season approached, the Orioles carried optimism for how the season would unfold. Their success in the earlier part of the decade had elevated the expectations of fans and they were hungry for more.
The roster boasted iconic Orioles players like Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray and Mike Boddicker. The city had reveled in the glory of pennant races and playoff runs of the early 80s, but little did they know that the 1988 season would unfold as a nightmarish chapter in the team's history - a tale of unmet expectations, shattered dreams, and a collapse that would be remembered for many years in baseball lore.
In today's video we look at MLB's WORST Losing Streak to Open a Season ...keep watching for more on baltimore orioles, baltimore, orioles, baltimore orioles 1988 season, 1988 baltimore orioles, baltimore orioles baseball cal ripken, orioles losing streak, baltimore orioles highlights, baltimore orioles (baseball team), baltimore orioles (professional sports team), orioles baseball, baltimore memorial stadium, the orioles,1980s, downtown baltimore, and the worst losing streak

Nobody had any hope that 1988 was going to be a particularly good team in 1988, they won 67 games in 1987. Outside Cal and Eddie that early 80s core was gone.
Of course no one thought they'd be a dozen games worse in 88

There was no promise entering 1988. Many previews expected them to lose 100 games. They had Murray and Ripken who started slowly. But they had four guys in the lineup or more each night who couldn't hit. Ken Gerhart, Jeff Stone, Billy Ripken, Jim Traber, Rene Gonzalez...they had nothing coming up through their system.
Just think from 2018-21 they had 3 teams worse than this in 4 seasons with the 4th season being covid.

The 2021 Orioles came close to breaking that streak in franchise history even though they didn't start out the same way the 1988 team did. The next year, they were in playoff contention until the very end just like the 1989 team did, better known as the Why Not Year.

It’s a minor miracle they were able to win that many after that start. If not they may have challenged the Mets

1988 was a long time ago don't be comparing bad teams of 2024 to the 1988 Orioles it was a different era they did rally to finish 54-107 for the season 😂

Definitely a long time ago. You are right 54 wins that year was a miracle after that start so they did rally to a certain extent. Thank you for the comment!

Well, this is something. A streak that will never happen again. The Orioles in '88 were different from previous seasons. It wasn't the team led by Weaver. The rotation wasn't there. Palmer retired. Ripken was the franchise face. Murray was right behind him in offensive terms. The team left much to be desired heading into the season.
