In this SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED, we break down the Any% (No Major Glitches) speedrun of Hollow Knight, performed by the former world record holder, Lep. This run includes some glitches and skips, including using your Shade to skip parts of the map, hitting levers through floors, and a glitch that pretty much lets you get super speed (although its use is limited in this category as it's considered a major glitch in certain applications). This video serves as an explanation of the strategies used by Lep to beat Hollow Knight in around 30 minutes. Had to make sure that this speedrun was covered on the tomatoanus channel before Silksong released ;)

I was so happy when I saw this notification. Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games ever and helped get me through some tough times. I'm happy everytime it gets some attention. Can't wait for Silksong in 2040 or whenever it actually comes out.

No matter how many times I hear it, the "no feeling is final" speech is always so meaningful. I've been in dark places before when watching these videos, and that short message that things will get better has been all it took to keep my head up for a bit longer. Thanks Tomato.

You don’t know how much impact you have in this world and it’s sad to see that your demons fight against you and want to take over you. Because you do make change, it’s something so simple and little that brightens up someone’s whole world, it can be a small smile from your lips, the way you look at things you’re passionate about, the way you make yourself eat even though it’s been hard for you lately, the way you zoom out and go in your own world, you brighten up my world by reading this, it means a lot to me that you’re here, existing, but I don’t want you to just exist, you deserve to feel alive. You deserve to get up in the morning and feel good about yourself. You deserve to feel something- to feel every damn second alive in this lifetime. It’s heartbreaking that you think you’re not capable of being loved, because you are, I love you trough all my words and I hope you let it happen in your heart. Love is scary, I know, maybe you heart had been broken once and since then you wanted to be rather numb than feel ever again, it hurts me how you punish yourself, does it not deserve love? Because YOU DO deserve love, please forgive yourself, it’s not your fault that the demons want to take over your beautiful heart. Enough with beating yourself up for today, okay? Your videos already give me a lot of joy and comfort, and the fact that you always take the time to give your "no feeling is final" bit just adds more to it. It especially helps that it never feels like the exact same spiel, instead it feels like there's actual effort and heart behind it. Dealing with regular mental health issues myself, it means a lot.
the amount of effort you consistently put into your videos is insane, there are so many little things that up the production value in subtle ways. even your ad reads are high effort! the "wall" counter bit is SO funny, and the fact you filmed yourself with a manual counter instead of just doing it with text on the screen just makes it even better

55:30 starts using the Besaid Theme from FFX. I like when people use FFX music (like Thunder plains, and the Zanarkand Theme).
Wonderfully explained and masterfully edited! And your little affirmation speech in the middle seriously brought a tear to my eye. A surprise, but a welcome one. I submitted an All Skills run last year, it's not amazing, but it was still quite fun. I don't see myself ever doing an Any% run, but ... never say never!

WCS being allowed as long as it's not a new sequence break is a nice QOL spirit of the run kind of thing, I like it.

Great video! Other people have tried to make similar videos on Hollow Knight before but none have been as accurate or in-depth. Lep also said that you were great to work with so I think that I speak for most of the hk speedrunning community when I say that we are happy this video was made.

This is the only game I’ve ever run. Because of watcher knights I’ve never managed to complete a run of any% even with upgraded fireball. I didn’t even know runners did walk cling storage in real time. All this to say, goddamn am I impressed
For everyone who doesn't know, this game is hard, really hard, and here lep is, bullying the bosses that took us days.

The fight against the Watchers was insane lol. I did it with basically the same upgrades he had (except the Dreamnail) and it took me soooo many tries. I could never pull off a speedrun, but I love to watch them. Thank you for the vid mate

also re the video, the section about the rafter skip made me think. runners always want to present the best but you could add some stakes to these by explaining hard tricks like that, then having the runners fail them sometimes. get the viewers invested in the run they're watching as well as educating them. idk shit though, love your work

The off screen fireball trick similar to the doom 2016 bfg menu trick also reminds me of the OG Megaman boss strat where using the lightning blast while rapidly pausing and unpausing causes you to damage the yellow devil boss over and over with one shot.
