    My favorite thing about this channel is that there's always a moment when I read the title in my sub box and "Whaat?" in a kind of exasperated/bemused way, but then I watch the video. The arguments are so well constructed that by then end, I find myself nodding and going "Yeah, that totally makes sense!"
    So what I'm saying is, I love this channel. Great job to everyone who works on it!

    Hi Idea Channel! I’ve been spending all morning doing various activities around my house while catching up on old episodes. I just wanted to chime in and say that you are all fantastic and I’m so happy you’re doing this work and making it available for us in the youtube space. I tend not to comment on videos, but after watching so much of your channel, I want to change that. Thanks so much for making me think. Hopefully one of my future comments will end up making you think too :)

    Without a doubt, this channel has the greatest comment section on RUclips. The comments are thoughtful, insightful, respectful, and often beautifully written. I honestly think there's even more to get from reading the comments section than the actual video (no offense). This is exactly why I prefer educational channels.

    What makes an actor good is his ability to draw us in through an emotional connection. By making us FEEL something in relation to what he's going through. Just like how we like songs more if the feeling is genuine and we can relate to what they're saying.

    YES!I FINALLY GOT MENTIONED IN THE VID :D!.By the way what makes a good celeb is actually caring about your roles,your character,his dynamic with others,thru careful preperation,being emotionally and intellectually engaging all while making your real personality naturalisttically appear somehow thru all that.It also applies 2 voice acting but the execution is clearly different.

    A beloved celebrity has great movie roles and legendary class. She is a person who holds themselves as the star that she is and doesn't look to the media for approval or attention. We are drawn to this person because of her mystique and dignity, and we admire her and are inspired by her.

    a well loved celebrity is someone with a certain level of given curiosity or talent that also has a clear moral code or sense of self in which they stand to.
    This is why people like Nicholas Cage aren't hated, even if he has bad roles, because he is genuine. This is something that will always be held above all other standards in terms of public appeal.

    Charisma is what defines a great actor. The ability for someone to talk to an audience and captivate them is a unique skill. While some may not consider Nicolas Cage to be a great actor, I find that he has a very strong and interesting personality. People just want to watch him act and see how he will perform for them, see what crazy and off the wall stuff he will do. I think that force of personality, that charisma, is what makes him such an interesting person to watch.

    I think he uses his life as one big experiment. YOLO comes into place where he chooses to do things that you only have one chance to do and find out the out come. The key word is ONCE or ONE.

    I think it's honesty that makes a good celebrity. Then we're not just celebrating they're performance, we're celebrating them. Walken and Gaga are two very good examples of this. Where as it may seem calculated and rehearsed with other actors/singers. But every now and again you get some one who not only indulges their spontaneity, but does such in front of an audience of untold numbers. And that is certainly worth taking note.

    I don't exactly know what YOLO is, but you put a good definition to it. It is as you say, do what you want without thinking about the consequences involved. I still think though that YOLO implies(only implies) that you have to work against nature to get what you want:
    One of the fundamental aspects of the Tao is the idea of a pure state of being in which you act without taking action. YOLO is the exact opposite; take as much action as you can.

  • @HeavyMetalMouse
    @HeavyMetalMouse 11 лет назад

    It's an important thing to remember, I've found, that something need not be 'good' to be worthy of discussion. Whether Cage is a 'good actor' or not, he very clearly puts 100% of himself into any role he plays, for better or worse, and damn the consequences. That, in its own way, is admirable. Compared to a previous comment likening him to a male Kristen Stewart, who I would contend does not exhibit that all-or-nothing quality.

    There is no right or wrong path in life unless you are headed to a specific destination. He was in the right place to be set on the path of the celebrity. There is no etherial force acting upon him, he just made a spontaneous decision that changed his life forever. He was the right kind of person in the right place. A fantastic human being.

    My theory is that Nick Cage melds together the concepts of ''work'', and ''fun''. As they say, ''when your work is your hobby, you have to love what you do''. As Cage is usually one of the only good actors in an otherwise bad movie, he is allowed to overact and be as hammy as he wants, getting as much fun as he can out of his role, and make the movie worth watching, while he picks good films to work in and get money.

    In terms of "what defines a really well-loved celebrity", I think you mentioned it towards the end of the video. It's a matter of how "Genuine" that person is. Another example I think of is Tom Hanks. Every time you see that guy, he just comes off as a genuinely awesome and nice guy. All reports about his personal life tend to re-affirm this. People can tell when a celebrity is being fake or calculating (Tom Cruise) and that can quickly turn people off of that person.

    I'll be honest, as an actor, Cage is pretty good, Bringing Out The Dead and Leaving Las Vegas are fine performances... But to a certain extent, by nature Taoism can be applied to any lifestyle you so choose. That's one of the coolest things about the idea. Personally, I choose Joeism. It involves wine.

    I have to admit that it is funny that you mention that his movies perhaps don't advance his career, yet in the same video you mention his ability to continue his, to quote you, "devil may care" attitude. Yet I agree, he does go further than most of us would with any acting which we would do, but it works. Perhaps he is going for some amazing record of movie acting roles held, maybe he has some internal method for choosing, possibly he merely really loves acting, or his love for acting just is.

    What makes a famous person is what people want. We all get tiered over time of the same stuff over and over, so we look for the ones who aren't afraid to step up and take on any role they can. We all want something new and strange to look at, just not to strange. With Nic Cage, he gets his love from fans for being one of a kind, and not taking on the same kind of role all the time.

    In that sense, it could go one of three ways;
    1) It could very well be YOLO because there is no focus on doing the good or bad thing because a true man cannot even truly notice those things,
    2) He is not making bad decisions, but decisions that somehow represent his purity, or
    3) Nic's not a true man at all, but rather just doing his own thing. He can definitely be sincere about it, and that can be Tao-ish in that his decisions are not bothered by other's perceptions...

    I think the point is that where other people fight nature in their pursuit of "Carpe Diem" they leave their natural behaviors behind, assuming masks in an effort to be noticed for something they are fundamentally not, hence the going against nature. Cage seems to have uncovered a method that allows him to remain true to himself while pursuing goals and ideas others find perplexing.
    Also gr8 use of my favor8 troll. You have all of my approval, all of it. ::::D

  • @Mazryik

    Orchistrated Chaos aside, I would venture to say that Nicholas Cage is one of the best actors I know of, not because he hasn't been in any bad movies (He has been in some incredibly bad movies) but because his preformances in both good and bad roles are so drastically good or bad, and he acheives both levels of the spectrum with sincerity. Because of this, I am always impressed after I see him in a role, and leaving an impression is the mark of a great actor. Hence, Cage is a great actor.

  • @LilyLoo2100
    @LilyLoo2100 12 лет назад

    Cage takes roles and approaches them in a way you would not expect, for better or for worse. His mannerisms and methods of acting bring to life characters that no one would really see coming. Like in the movie Vampire's Kiss, Cage plays a man going insane from thinking he's a vampire. Some may see his over-dramatic acting as bad, but he sells the character well through this, making it an enjoyable movie. He blurs the line between genius actor and a legitimate crazy person.

    I think what makes a good celebrity is just about showing how you truly are, and not what Hollywood tells you to be. I feel this connects with the Miku Hatsune vs. Lana Del Rey. It's because people don't what to feel as if they are being lied to or controlled by the media.

  • @LatinForWind
    @LatinForWind 12 лет назад

    Well, it really depends on our focus is at that point in time! Pop culture is constantly altering little by little. Since celebrities already have that boost to start a new "trend," all that is left is society to judge. But what makes someone a "good celebrity" is his or her action towards the directed audience. Nicholas Cage fits into comedy films, drama, action, thriller-- the list can go on. :)

  • @BrendonAlekseii
    @BrendonAlekseii 11 лет назад

    I wanna refer to Master Zhang's quote in the video and see if this changes the conversation a little... It is often said of Tao that there is no real 'wrong' or 'right', much like how Master Zhang says that life and death and good and bad do not concern a true man.
    It may not, however, be that these things do not exist, but that a man 'pure in spirit' is incapable of making decisions that can be viewed that way, but rather simply 'pure decisions.

    That explains Nic Cage's behavior perfectly. There are also other actors with similiar modus operandi when it comes to choosing roles, like Sir Ben Kingsley who chose the role of Kagan (Bloodrayne) because it seemed fun (sic!).
    And to end this comment, I am giving a positive Roger Ebert quote about Nic: " There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. He [Nic Cage] should always be up there. [...] He is committed [...] with every atom [...]."

    There are exactly 3 components that comprise a well-received or even "loved" celebrity.
    1. A level of attractiveness that does not seem intimidating, but still, a really powerful, fantasy inducing attractiveness.
    2. A personal life that is a wreck, so as to make a person feel better, and continue to be curious with what's new in that celebrity's life.
    3. Making commercials for well-known products, appliances, yogurt, hair products. You know, stuff you might find in your own home.

    A popular celebrity has to relate to an audience in at least one of two ways. 1) The celebrity has shared common experience with said audience. 2) The The audience wants to be like the celebrity. It doesn't have to be a total engagement but some part of the audience needs to relate with a celebrity in tone of those ways. That or they just want to sleep with said famous person. All three reasons are very instinctive and sometimes we don't notice that it's the reason why we follow their lives.

    The ad before the video asked what if the world around me was fake. It reminded me of an article that I once read about how life could be a hologram of sorts and completely fake yet real at the same time. That could lead to thoughts of movies such as Inception, Surrogates, or The Matrix. This is an idea that you could probably do an entire video on.

    There's a fine line between Yolo and Crazy. I agree, Cage is just doing what he wants and because he is Nic Cage, he can do that. It would be nice to see him in a serious role for once. If he is doing "Yolo," then shouldn't he be out trying all kinds of roles, not just crazy and goofy roles.

    Cage just exemplifies a life in which the burden of consequence is nonexistent. We on the sidelines cheer because after a life of weighing pros and cons and trying to minimize risk, that lifestyle of "we've got nothing to loose, consequences be damned" is a very enticing one.
    So why don't we all throw caution to the wind and indulge every whim in reckless abandon? Chaos.
    See that collective burden of consequence is what keeps the world sane. Less funtastic maybe, but considerably more stable.
