Thanks for the help mate. your the only person on RUclips that show's how to do it right. now I know what to do with my mega drive 2 thanks for the help mate.
Hey Robert, this was an old video with poor audio sorry, but I'm glad you found it useful. Tensioning the cart slot and cleaning the pins usually fix the issues.
Hey, I've just went through the whole repairs, it's been really interesting (even tho I fixed my MD just before watching, mostly reflowing cart pins). I keep in mind the "bend the pins" thingy since it will probably be required on one of em ! Anyways, thanks again for your expertise and cool video !
HI, I have a Genesis model 1 where I need both RF and AV for it to show a picture. I'm pretty sure it is the ground pin having a dry solder. Do you think this is the case? I need a second opinion on this. Thanks!
These are great videos! Currently trying to trouble shoot my megadrive lack of video! I don't get any videos and the image on screen just floats up through the top of the tele
The reset button was one problem on mine. The other is it has to warm up for a minute before it can be played. Is it a big deal,or is it easy to fix, and is the console safe to use. Thanks, cool video😎😎😎
Would you happen to have some advice troubleshooting a model 2? It get's power and outputs a signal but it's a black screen. Confirmed all cables and the game are working on another system. The only odd thing I've found so far is the leftmost pin of the cartridge slot has no current running through it, but I'm not sure if that's normal or not. All the other pins show 5v as they should. Reflowed the solder on the video connector.
+Global Garage thanks for sharing your tips, your videos are well done and informative. I have a model 2 that is getting power and is getting a video signal but never gets past the Sega license screen that displays when the game first boots. The license text displays for a few seconds and then goes black and never does anything after that. Have you run into this before? Things I've done so far is cleaning the pins and re-tensioned, flowed power port pins, and tried different cables and games with the same results. Any tips?
Does it happen with all games? It sounds like a dirty cart slot to me, so the only way to troubleshoot further would be to try different games in your console, then the same games in another console and see if there are any changes.
Yes, I've tried different games and cart slot is as clean as I can get it, and all my games get cleaned when I get them. I could try cleaning more, see if it helps. I just think its odd that every time it get the white license text perfectly and never gets to the "SEGA" screen or game title. I'm having a similar issue with an SHVC SNES but just gets a plain black screen with no blinking... I think it may actually have a dead CPU, was hoping it wasn't the case with the Sega. Thanks for the reply
+adilator HI thanks for the feedback! I use an old Dell U2711 with a tonne of inputs. Great videos. I have a Japanese model 1 Megadrive that I picked up from ebay afew months ago that needs some attention. Pretty dirty and beat up but I'm determined to give this unit a new life! Basically the reset button isn't working, I took off the cover and tested it whilst it was on directly on the board and it worked so I think it might be an issue with the switch itself and the power switch is actually quite stiff. Plus the RGB connector at the back is stiff too. I'm thinking of using contact cleaner for the connector and the power switch but I'm not too sure. Do you have any recommendations for these issues?
Ah thanks! I thought it might be different for a model 1. I'm gonna guess using the contact cleaner on the power switch and RGB connection will be fine too :)
+Simon Brown I've just picked up a SNES and a bunch of Super Famicoms that need repair. I'll do at least two videos on that Nintendo lot. N64.. I have an RGB kit ready to install as well.
hey there, my megadrive model 2 stoped working recently. it started to display a black and white screen at first, and now the sound loads, but the screen is totally black. I`ve already cleaned the games and cart slot and my games with isopropyl alchool, but it didn`t work. I`m not sure if it`s an av port issue(i dont have rf cable to test it), or if it`s a problem with the pcb. Is there any way for me to spot the problem and fix it?
gerson veiga Ribeiro How are you connecting it? RF, Composite or RGB? I'd first take the board completely out and inspect it for corrosion or dry solder joints. Look closely at the fine pins on the chips as a small amount of corrosion could cause this issue
I have a sega genesis model 2 with wavy video over RGB, I've yet to try it with a regular composite cable, but what do you think it could be? I had a technician do a reflow on the video port since it is such an old console, but the mini din9 port looks very mistreated. Do you think I should replace the caps or the mini din port? or both?
I would definitely replace the caps. You can do just the ones in the video output area of the board first, but you may as well buy a whole cap kit for your model as they are cheap as. console5.com has them
Global Garage Thanks for the info! I buy caps all the time from console5. The trouble will be finding a decent technician in my country. Its too bad I live too far from Australia, otherwise I would've contacted you guys about it.
I have a reset switcth on the same style genesis were the membrane is gone it fell apart. online says get a tact switch and i measured so i can see it takes a 10mm by 10mm switch. My problem is the membrane is gone so I can't really tell the proper height for a switch. This one caught my eye but not sure about the height nor if it is even the correct type. www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&itemSeq=216753461&uq=636203741448976006 Spacing and leg count looks solid so IF it is the correct type of switch and height i should be good. Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Is it possible that the power fix is shorting on the RF/EMI shielding when you tweak the cable and see flickering?

nice work mate :)

+Simon Brown I post a lot of Sega related content don't I haha I'm releasing two Playstation videos this week.
yoi were fixing all the consoles i watvhed all in one go all that stuck was "sega" it was like ok lol
What do you want to see next? I've just done two PS2 videos but up next is some Nintendo stuff like Famicom and Super Famicom

+Simon Brown I've just picked up a SNES and a bunch of Super Famicoms that need repair. I'll do at least two videos on that Nintendo lot. N64.. I have an RGB kit ready to install as well.

I have a model 3, using composite on 2007 hd tv and it shows graphics in black and white, no color. Clean cart slot. Any ideas?
Kenton Bocock Is that NTSC Composite? If you’re in the States then it should work as your TVs are all NTSC. Sounds like a TV compatibility issue.
Global Garage yes ntsc, everything works just no color. All my model 2s work using same cable and input. Will try old tv.
tried on a different older tv and using rgb, no color. Any ideas?
Hi, what's the multi SCART board you had in the last half of the video for the RGB testing?
I have a sega genesis model 2 with wavy video over RGB, I've yet to try it with a regular composite cable, but what do you think it could be?

south america...
Good job
My genesis turned on then turned off and isn’t turning back on no matter what I do

Spacing and leg count looks solid so IF it is the correct type of switch and height i should be good. Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
