- Stellantis that owns the Jeep brand, has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Indian Automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra for allegedly design infringement. FCA alleges that the Mahindra Thar’s design Is uncannily similar to its iconic off-roader Jeep Wrangler.

Mahindra has already been blocked from selling current generation Thar in the US. Now Jeep is attempting to stop Mahindra’s off-roading SUV from being sold in Australia as they believe that it might pull down the sales of Wrangler.
Mahindra has already received over 50,000 bookings for the second-gen Thar in India, and the waiting period is said to stretch as a full year in some cities. The company is also said to be working on a bigger, five-door model, which will again look similar to the five-door version of the Jeep Wrangler.
The second-gen Thar is an evolution of the original Thar which itself was based on the design of the Jeep CJ of the 1960s, and Willys CJ of the 1940s. Mahindra was granted a license in 1947 to use the Jeep and CJ trademarks. Over time, the vehicles were localized and sold in India. The body design and a significant portion of its mechanical architecture remain largely untouched. This marked Mahindra as a manufacturer of off-roader SUVs in India and the neighboring countries. That’s why Thar is visibly similar to the Wrangler.

F.C.A now demanding that Mahindra should not launch the Thar in Australia and should give a 90-day notice if it intends to do so. In response to Jeep’s lawsuit, Mahindra has clearly said there are no plans to Introduce Thar in Australia at this time as and Mahindra will provide the above said notice to FCA if they are going to launch any future model of the Thar in Australia

You must be deaf what was said in this owner. Mahindra didn't copy Jeep's design. They're were given full right by the previous Jeep's owner or whatever was the name. in term of legality Mahindra Legally Design Thar, but when it comes to "How it is designed", it's undeniable that Mahindra's Latest gen Thar's design is influenced by Jeep Wrangler Design.
If people says it's a Wrangler Copy, You can't deny it since Wrangler came out first with that Upto date design.
*In my Opinion* There are Many ways Thar could have different design whilst still keep the Willys Original Look but Mahindra Chose to make it resemble Wrangler for Market Sales.

My opinion- Mahindra is now a renowned car manufacturer, they should not COPY the style of other manufacturers even if they have the license to do so. I mean really, just look at the thar and wrangler...Thar looks like a Chinese copy of it, just a little modification.
Mahindra has its own R&D team, what are their car designers or engineers doing? Are they being paid to just copy the design? Or have they switched their profession to Law? Instead of fighting legal battles, invest in R&D, good engineers, and make your own independent identity. People around the world should see your car and say "Hey, see that's Mahindra!" & not "a car design copying company".

Mahindra Jeeps have been in India since 1945, the Thar is the latest and natural evolution of the Mahindra Jeep
Chrysler never manufactured the CJ, AMC did, who got it from Kaiser, who got it from Willys, who stole it from Bantam. Mahindra was given the right to build a Jeep way back when by the US Army, who commissioned the Jeep in the first place.

But the original will always hold more value than the copied version as in the case of willy's jeep, it has its own value and demand high above the mahindra CJ. And there is no denying the fact that Thar is a copy of wrangler from the design of the headlight to the brakelight irrespectiveof whether they can do that in India or not. I don't know why Indian manufacturers are acting like Chinese copy cats now.
