Yes, it's powerful! But it screams more than POWER to me. It's somber, it screams EVIL, perfect as the main theme for the Serie. When I watched the 1st episode I was sort of WOW, what's this??! I was fascinated by the music and the images edition, and how they beautifully blended together! Awesome!!
Whoever conceived of and edited the time-lapse visuals and Beal's theme under the opening credits captured the complexities of the show and Washington itself; events moving faster than the eye can see in a world that appears set in stone. About as good as theme music and visuals get.
Yes, well said, it shows Washington set in stone, majestic and representative of the highest ideals, but captures its complexities even beyond that by also showing its intertwined dirty, dark, and grimy corners.
This is a wonderful musical rendition screaming power, elegance, and darkness. It's my favorite TV show's opening theme, and I'm watching the show again in 2024.
One of my favorite parts of HoC is the music. Love the layers and textures that Jeff put into the theme. Really emodies constant pace and layers of action in DC. I noticed when I watched Blackfish for the first time (after previously watching HoC) immediately that it was Jeff's music. Keep up the great composition!
People Like Jeff and Hans Zimmer are inspiration to new generation and attracts attention to non-technical people like me to try to understand that there is lot of science and technical involved even in small piece of music. First heard Jeff in The Black Fish, very impressed then.
First time I saw HOC I was intrigued by the music. Thanks, Mr. Beal for a fascinating peek into your creative process. Love the layers over that bass line, especially the hemiola. Your theme really sets the sinister tone of the story line.
This guy is a GENIUS. First time i've heard the House of Cards theme it reminded me of Rome TV series theme and what do you know, he composed both. "I Know What I Have To Do" and "Making history" are my favorites from House of Cards.
So interesting how he comes up with this stuff! It all sounds very original too (Unlike a lot of composers out there today). He could be the next John Williams!!
The baseline is sampled from the SWAT theme, one of the best opening themes ever. I can't believe no one's ever noticed it. It's hard to believe he couldn't know that.
Cuando inicia una nueva temporada de House of Cards, oigo la música del inicio y algo tiene, que me emociona mucho. Gracias Sr. Jeff Beal por compartir la explicación... y por la música ¡claro! When start a new season of House of Cards, I hear the music start and has something that excites me a lot. Thanks for sharing explanation Mr. Jeff Beal... and the music of course!
I could swear I remember watching a video in which he explained the intro was inspired by a piece by pachelbel, and also inspired by the way in which pachelbel composed, that being layers added over time and then taken away in equal fashion, and his desire to finally see a resolve in such a work as that. But now for the life of me I cant find any such reference.
Brilliant theme I like to listen to it. When I saw the last Kingdom that theme sounds very similar to this one I actually thought that this guy wrote the theme for that other series and that is what brought me here in search of who wrote the theme for both of these series on Netflix
Mr. Beal is a genius! I rank him up there with Hoyt Curtin (Johnny Quest 1964, Fantastic Four 1967), and Dominic Frontiere (Original Outer Limits). Thank you Mr. Beal!
Stunning to hear that feature with simultaneous A major and A minor which is actually as far against the rules of musical harmony as the actions of Underwoods are :)
Tension and suspense build and build in the theme song, letting us know that EVIL is afoot! Just like the HoC characters, the scariest of evils do not have to shout their presence.
I'm a bit confused by all this. Listen to the run out on this Dalziel and Pascoe episode from 2005 ruclips.net/video/hOkc047hcCM/видео.html - ring any bells??
This strangely reminds me of the theme of Dynasty in '80s, if anyone could remember, though I clearly prefer this music. Both aptly depict 'Vanity fair' methinks.
The baseline is sampled from the SWAT theme, one of the best opening themes ever. I can't believe no one's ever noticed it. It's hard to believe he couldn't know that.
Love this theme. It is the only tv theme I never skip past when binge watching an ep.
I love it too - I never skip it
Totally agree! The theme to Narcos is just as good. I never skip past it
"...only tv theme I never skip..." Just realized the same thing.
'
that and stranger things... and true detective... and...
This theme is addicting because it just screams "POWER"
yeah jajajja
Yes, it's powerful! But it screams more than POWER to me. It's somber, it screams EVIL, perfect as the main theme for the Serie. When I watched the 1st episode I was sort of WOW, what's this??! Genius theme song, one of the best I've ever heard. A match to the series made in heaven, so to speak.
listen to "walking on the road of life" by chen xiaohua
very similiar
absolute genius. I cannot imagine being even 1% as creative as him.
Always nice to hear my theme tune.
Go away, lol
"It's wrong but it felt right" love that line, great chords, great composer!
This guy translates motion into music. amazing.
The best theme ever! The show thrives because of it.
i freaking love that deep dark baseline!!! love it!!!
This is a wonderful musical rendition screaming power, elegance, and darkness. It's my favorite TV show's opening theme, and I'm watching the show again in 2024.
the only theme music i don't fast forward thru..... gives me chills... musical genius!
My favorite theme of all time. Nothing else evokes such beautiful power. Genius composer!
Thank you for this!
Damn this guy is beast. The way he explains his music is perfect.
One of the Greatest TV Themes of All Time!
Jeff Beal Is An Absolute Genius!
Brilliant, i miss the show so much. :(
I love his work so much. Great soundtrack!
Completely fascinated by music composition
People Like Jeff and Hans Zimmer are inspiration to new generation and attracts attention to non-technical people like me to try to understand that there is lot of science and technical involved even in small piece of music.
First heard Jeff in The Black Fish, very impressed then.
Love the fact that a great composer doesn't need to be a perfect piano player.
First time I saw HOC I was intrigued by the music. Thanks, Mr. Beal for a fascinating peek into your creative process. Love the layers over that bass line, especially the hemiola. Your theme really sets the sinister tone of the story line.
Good job Jeff! Genius! Remarkable themes!

Really? Listen to the them of Mission Impossible, the old TV show he lifted the first three bars of the melody
Thank you so much for explaining your approach. Very didactic!
I love the theme music to this show. Cough, vinyl release?
Jeff Beal is amazing!!! Thanks for sharing this!
The intricacy of the simplistic
What a joy!!!
One of the best TV themes of all time! Love hearing about the process, thanks!
Thank you for this insight into just what your thoughts and considerations are when writing for film.
Terry UK
Terry Killeen hi Terry
This theme song is awesome. I usually back up the video and listen to it more than once.
Could he provide and explanation for why the theme changes slightly from season to season?
You should listen to the Music Exploder podcast with Jeff Beal, where he goes more into depth into what and why he changed it.
So that wasn't my imagination!
Genius. Thank you!
you may think that
I couldn't possibly comment
Best comment in here
wow, huge artist and music master

I love this theme song. I actually have it as a ring tone.
I love Jeaf Beal , he is great
the moment I heard HoC's theme for the same time, I knew it was Jeff, I recognised his way of using trumpets from Rome HBO
Awesome!
The baseline is sampled from the SWAT theme, one of the best opening themes ever. I can't believe no one's ever noticed it. It's hard to believe he couldn't know that.

all his soundtracks fits so well in the serie.. I miss it so much. Sad what happened with the show.
Musical genius.
Master piece!
there's nothing about it wrong, it's called music theory. it's only theory.
I could swear I remember watching a video in which he explained the intro was inspired by a piece by pachelbel, and also inspired by the way in which pachelbel composed, that being layers added over time and then taken away in equal fashion, and his desire to finally see a resolve in such a work as that. The office, Dexter, the west wing, and house of cards are the only themes I never skip.
I would love to hear Jeff Beal's similar comments on the "Rome" theme song! Love his music.
Mr. Beal is a genius! I rank him up there with Hoyt Curtin (Johnny Quest 1964, Fantastic Four 1967), and Dominic Frontiere (Original Outer Limits). Thank you Mr. Beal!
So...good!
Legend

Magnificent!!!
Genius.
The persistent, relentless pursuit of power with the frantic accompanying constant running, running.
Something about this reminds me of Michael Nyman's score for The Piano.
Great theme - works perfectly for House of Cards.
Mission Impossible the old TV show
What is the official name of the "Puppet-master" theme played at 0:17?
It's interesting to see techniques like polytonality being utilised in music like this.
Otima!
Idolooooo!!!
Link for 0:57 song?
Freakin' awesome!
thanks...
No comment on the strings from Dancing Queen? =)
Look up "House of Cards cello" to see my cover!
2:53 what piece of music is this?
Boo Boo
"I know what I have to do" from the OST
I wish Jeff Beal has the appreciation and acknowledgment in which Ramin Djawadi recieved.
What is the first thing he plays called? I can't find anything named puppetmaster theme
Tvde1 You might want to take a listen to "One Bite At a Time" and "Chessboard Revealed" from the HOC Season 1 soundtrack
His right hand does a what? at 0:20s
A hemiola (rhythm)
Thanks for Pollock.
Wow... way more thought put into this piece than I thought. Fantastic stuff, though.
No, I recognize it from Mission Impossible, sans fourth bar Surprised it wasn't a copyright infringement
Sounds like Sade's Soldier of Love song to me especially when trumpet fanfare comes in.
I'm a bit confused by all this. Listen to the run out on this Dalziel and Pascoe episode from 2005 ruclips.net/video/hOkc047hcCM/видео.html - ring any bells??
It reminds me so much of Erik Satie at 2:50
❤
Music score madmen
man's a genius
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!

Reminds me of this ruclips.net/video/hOkc047hcCM/видео.html - ring any bells? This is from Dalziel and Pascoe episode from 2005 - scarily close......
why he looks like Gareth Walker
sounds like walking on the road of life chen xiaohua
His music for carnival was so minimalistic and extremely moving! ruclips.net/video/NgCMC-DMsNQ/видео.html Great musician.
si no hablara y solo tocara el piano seria el mejor cover :/
tenes que escuchar lo que explica, eso es lo mas interesante y demuestra que es un tremendo artista.
It's appalling bad.
I would love to hear Jeff Beal's similar comments on the "Rome" theme song! Love his music.
The baseline is sampled from the SWAT theme, one of the best opening themes ever. I can't believe no one's ever noticed it. It's hard to believe he couldn't know that.
And there's Mission Impossible the old TV show, too, First time I heard I thought whoa, this is familiar
