Superb! Anna is so lyrical and gives this song the gravitas it needs. I have practiced this song myself and cannot tolerate anyone singing this badly or flippantly or prettily without the pathos it needs. Anna does this. Her voice curls around notes like a tendril of a vine. What a lovely voice and such mastery of high notes. Thank you for this treat!
It is heart-warming for me to read the lovely comments regarding the GREAT ANNA MOFFO! It's been many, many years since I was fortunate to see and hear her in person!!! She was/is AMAZING in every respect! A great musician was SHE! Oh how wonderful was ANNA MOFFO!
She is amazing. Favourite singer ever. Thank you for posting x

Our dear Anna sounds like an angel praying. I can hear and feel her soul listening to this divine prayer. One of the greatest sopranos ever. Amazing voice.
listened to several versions here on RUclips, this one remains head and shoulders the most magnificent and truly transcendent. gave me all sorts of reasons to consider renouncing agnosticism.
What an amazing voice but her technique is out of this world - that first phrase is done in one breath intake - incredible. I wish she had sung some of my favorite operas.
My Mother heard her sing live and was the best Soprano she ever heard. Her voice was pure crystal, faultless and she acted her socks off during it all, a consummate professional. Her upper registrar was exquisite and appeared so effortless and natural, never forced. They should play her more often on the radio and television to show perfection and teach young singers her technique
Mr. Shepard - it's a pleasure to see you here! I was a student of Joseph Machlis at Juilliard and I later worked for him and arranged his musical parties back in the mid-1980s. I always knew your name as a very high-level classical music record producer, but I did not know you also served as a conductor and arranger. I have always admired Anna Moffo's recordings, so it's a real pleasure to know that you produced this one!

I envy you TZS, I would have loved to watch and listen this true diva rehearse and perform in person. She was one of the greatest sopranos ever along with Popp, Freni, and Sutherland (my opinion only).
VERY interesting, TZS, and congratulations for your involvement in this exquisite rendition. The LP in my possession was NOT the 1970 disk you mention but rather a True Value Hardware collection of Xmas tunes -- unbelievable that such a classy recording was to be found on so commonplace a venue. I recalled the purchase as being late '60's but, that being almost 50 years ago I'm happy to admit to a couple of years of timeline error. The real question here is: Can you explain why this recording was not listed among AM's oficial discography? This recording seems to have been totally unknown before In pposted it on RUclips some years ago. Thx. for any insight you can offer and again congratulations for this superb recording. - Bill
to see this so masterfully done at such a low part of her range is awesome! it was breathtaking. trolls complaining about sliding should stay in school a little longer.
Thank you. I had not heard Ms. Moffo's rendition of this beautiful composition.. I agree with others who have praised vocal talent. Thank you again for sharing your 'find' from the 1960s. :-)
Incredible. I can see the score's dynamic signatures in my mind's eye that I never respected when I learnt/performed this piece myself, and I have found few singers to do.
I thought so as well. I don't think any famed singers will (wisely+intentionally) choose to end their careers in the most ridiculous way which is by plain sabotaging their own voices. Look at Callas, anyone dares to say her techniques were "wrong"; and neither were Moffo's. Salut to the two great sopranos ever and what an ethereal interpretation of Ave Maria to listen to in the morning !
I agree that this is the best rendition of this piece. I would like to have heard Callas sing it, but the only "Callas" version on RUclips is a fake, and Google comes up with zip, indicating that she never recorded it. Anyone know anything to the contrary?
Cont'd .... Clearly Goodyear Tire didn't commission this recording, so I suspect it is from the early '60, or late '50's, and GT (and later True Value HW) paid a royalty to include it on their Xmas discs. But I am clueless as to when & where the original recording might have been made. Glad you liked it.
yes, maria callas has recorded it, i found it, and i am sure it`s her voice, you can not forget her voice and change it for another one. It`s extraordinary , it`s millenium voice and soo beautiful and emotional!
Hi & thaks for your remarks. The provenence of this recording is obscure, not sur why so fabulous a rendition should have remainded so long in the dark. I'm almost embarrased to say it, but I have this from a "True Value Hardware Store" Xmas album from 1969, purchased by me for 99 cents. I know the recording is earlier because it is also on the '66 Xmas album issued by Goodyear Tire, and yes, that disc is available on CD from private sellers on the web. Cont'd ....
She had a sweet personality few if any beats her Susanna or her Rosina. She had apart from her gorgeous voice and pretty looks, a sort of charm and joie de vivre that is absolutely irresistible. This is so wonderfully sung.
You must have exquisite taste, Anna Moffo one of the finest sopranos of all time does Ave Maria, thank you so verymuch.
Robert Howes I agree...........................................................
Thank you for those kind words, AM was an operatic gem, at times underappreciated.
So much for self-congratulation Robert & Billy ... not done where I grew up. At least not so obvious. ;)
Thank you for your lovely words she was always the best , liked her very much also my mother was a great fan of her , thank you good night .!!
Amazing! Brava.
Awesome control!!!!! Such a rich and beautiful voice....I love her vibrato. Just amazing!!!
Dont like the vibrato

Esperienza indimenticabile.

Exquisite low notes, perfect high notes! Anna Moffo was a great talent
Che meraviglia sentir cantare Anna
Utterly magnificent. Cannot listen without tears in my eyes.
She is amazing. Favourite singer ever. Thank you for posting x
Our dear Anna sounds like an angel praying. I can hear and feel her soul listening to this divine prayer. One of the greatest sopranos ever. Amazing voice.
An achingly beautiful piece to get lost in. I think I have just found what I want to be played at my funeral,
listened to several versions here on RUclips, this one remains head and shoulders the most magnificent and truly transcendent. gave me all sorts of reasons to consider renouncing agnosticism.
If the angels sing, it must be like her! What a splendid voice!
The most beautifull so far! Thank you for sharing!
What an amazing voice but her technique is out of this world - that first phrase is done in one breath intake - incredible. I wish she had sung some of my favorite operas.
I am a big Amira Willighagen fan...AND a big Anna Moffo fan...this version is a sublime rendering, absolutely exquisite.
My Mother heard her sing live and was the best Soprano she ever heard. Her voice was pure crystal, faultless and she acted her socks off during it all, a consummate professional. Her upper registrar was exquisite and appeared so effortless and natural, never forced.
Fabulous rendition..........thanks for posting
This made me cry.
This is from a GOODYEAR xmas record circa 1970. I was the arranger-conductor. TZS

I can't find words of praise high enough because there are none. I was blown to ashes . . . nope. Not good enough. Thank you Anna Moffo.
Lovely. I will never stop loving my hometown diva.
they have mined a lot of talent out of PA.
Wow what a VOICE sounds and emotion very beautiful version
Amazing. Awesome. My many feeble attempts in the alto range don't hold a candle to her.

Grandissima Anna Moffo!!!!!!!Voce meravigliosa!!!!

I think her singing IS filled with passion and pathos, but a sublime one!
The best interpretation of this Ave Maria Bach/Gounod
Une ligne de chant incroyable, tellement émouvant! Merci infiniment.
O my god , this is so beautiful ...
Wowwww! She can bring Bach and Gounod back to life.
The perfect voice and way to sing this wonderfull aria
Que voz! Belíssima como um anjo. Tão sublime. Brava!
Purely perfect in every way. Thanks for putting it out there
Two more, equally exquisite Moffo renditions: the Rachmaninoff "Vocalise" and "Ach, ich fühl’s” from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
Yes! Her "Chi il bel sogno di Doretta" is fantastic, too. I adore Anna 💞
a stunning, well-rounded sound - fearless and beautiful.
Una voce davvero meravigliosa! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

WOW! I can't believe that I've never heard this recording. Thank you for posting it. I have added it to my AVE MARIA playlist!
Incredible. I can see the score's dynamic signatures in my mind's eye that I never respected when I learnt/performed this piece myself, and I have found few singers to do.
Absolutely perfect
Breath-taking! and just beautiful! Thx for sharing this vocal treasure w/ us.
Gee, I thought I heard every rendition of Ave Maria by Bach, this is the best.
Wonderful singing. ....nice voice

Have you listened to Kathleen Battle? Smooth as silk!
I agree that this is the best rendition of this piece. I would like to have heard Callas sing it, but the only "Callas" version on RUclips is a fake, and Google comes up with zip, indicating that she never recorded it. Anyone know anything to the contrary?
I think people might have a picture what a soprano should look like--and Ms. Moffo was this look--
I prefer this Ave Maria to Schubert's, and this is the best rendition of the Bach/Gounod I have heard yet.
I don't notice it--I admit I'm not a vocal expert. Her vocal gifts more than make up for those imperfections. She's the best---
Very brilliant by one of the best.
Simply beautiful!

At her best, and that period didn't last long enough, she was absolutely stunning.
Anna Moffo is wonderful, perfect.
Your mother was fortunate to grow up and know such a talent.

You are right!
