- Alexander Fadeev 1989 Europeans LP - Brilliant performance. Note the British judge gives a 5.6 for Presentation. Her reasoning was that his undergarments were not appropriate LOLOL!!!

В фигуристе все должно быть прекрасно - техника, артистичность, стиль, кураж. В Фадееве это все есть. Браво! С такой программой и сегодня можно выиграть ЧЕ.
Блистательно ! Сверхсложная программа - столько сложнейших прыжков и всё на такой высокой скорости ! Потрясающе ! С труселями слишком свободно получилось, ну да ладно, не они здесь главное. Ай да Фадеев, ай да Леонович ! Красавцы !

I became a huge fan of Alexander Fadejew' amazing performances, since the early 80th. He is so creative and artistical... and so elegant. Many people at the time did don't care how many triple, double or what kindsof toe-loops he perfomed. It' s just pure poetry!!! ❤❤❤.

Надо помнить и знать историю этого вида фигурного катания,как и всех других дисциплин этого прекрасного вида спорта.
Ванесса - глупая тётка-извращенка, - пока остальные восемь судей восторгались грандиозным ледовым воплощением мировой балетной классики, она щепетильно пялилась всего-то на трусы...
Ванесса Райли поставила его на первое место, тем не менее. А что касается оценки, то она это об'яснила- это был дедакшн за костюм.

Wonderful performance but British judge Vanessa Riley's marking at the end of it was what I honestly wanted to see again LOL. I don't have this video, but I am currently putting together a montage to post up of some more of her 'memorable' judging moments for the sheer joy at seeing her make her point. I'll let you know when i've posted it up.

This, to me, is among of the most memorable performances of all times. After watching him deliver exceptionally strong OP and FS there, I couldn't have possibly imagined that he wouldn't even medal at the worlds a few weeks later...
By the way, this remains one of my favorite competitions, with some of the most interesting/captivating/great performances--e.g., Annenko/Sretensky's FD (whom we never saw again as amateurs after this competition), Leistner's FS, Lebedeva's SP & FS, etc. etc.

amazing and unforgettable skater. Wonder why never see him around the rinks of the europeans or world championships. where does he teach now? he was really a great skater.

Vanessa Riley still had him first, which was in step with how it should have been. I always thought that the British judges were overly pretentious in their marking.

LOL Classic! (and that still meant she was only gonna give 5.8 when the rest had 5.9 or 6.0) Good for her in any case:)

Vanessa Riley is insane! I usually agree with her harsh marking, but she's so out of line here. Incredible performance, so worth 6.0 artistically and probably even technically (only mistake was on a double, every triple jump and spin is just wow!)
She was interviewed about this later in the week and she deducted for the inappropriate costume, i.e. at ice level his pants are see-thru and you can clearly see his jock. She took the mandatory deduction for the rule at that time but still had him clearly in first in her placements.

Ah, really? 5.6 here with deduction 0.4 points instead of 0.1-0.2 (if she indicate the costum) - called "did not 'follow the herd' and marked accordingly" ?!! In fact it's called disgraceful and shameless judging, absolutely out of rules! Also as many times of Stapleford and Riley!

This has got nothing to do with the skating but I do have the clip and I remember Vanessa, when asked, laughed in a naughty hicuppy way just like the woman who was married to Terry Scott did in Carry On Camping.

In his previous years he had a spectacular 3lutz-3toe, so I wonder what made this year different.
Even back then you could tell who's underscoring Russian athletes!
Using a presentation score to penalize a skater for breaking costume rules just seems like the wrong place and time. Presentation is for the artistry of the skating, and you could make the case that his costume enhanced the performance lol
Costume rule breaking should be brought up after the competition. Like have an official meeting to discuss making the rules more specific.

it's not a thong. It's an athletic supporter. All athletes wear them. Usually with a cup to prevent injuries to the family jewels.
