@@TheConfessor Fair enough. Speaking of halfling-related weirdness, have you seen TT Combat's "halfling shield maiden" miniatures range? They're apparently Scandinavian-themed, and have halfling cavalry dames riding walruses. It's...ah...something to behold, I'll give it that.
I got the Dwarves of Rockhom Gazetteer #6 on the dwarves and used it to help inform and flesh out my dwarven underground complex I was building. Maybe the Rings of Power people could get the Hafling one and flesh out their Proto-Hobbits. I Think TNG did better with their Proto-Vulcans.
Great review! I recently got this on POD to finish off my collection of the Gazetteers and wasn't disappointed. I think they are all pretty good, but the five* non-human Gazetteers arguably add most value to BECMI players as they really help expand the demi-human options. I think you can also plug those nations into other campaigns a lot more easily than Karameikos or Thyatis (for example). It's also good to see the Hin get a proper name for themselves. "Halfling" just sounds like an insult. Looking forward to your next Mystara review! *Alfheim; Rockhome; Shires; Thar; Shadow Elves.
"It's also good to see the Hin get a proper name for themselves. "Halfling" just sounds like an insult." There's a webcomic called Alfie where using the word "halfling" will get you you a sharp object in the gut from any of them who hear you, the proper term being havlin. I'd advise skipping on it unless you're into fantasy smut, it's one of those very NSFW comics. Which is a pity, because what worldbuilding the author has done around the porn has been pretty interesting. Prudish puritanical havlin who live in backwater territories, orc-analog "green men" who are terrified of their women and often leave home to find work as heavy labor someplace safer, a spreading pseudo-botanical blight called the Redwood that's slowly devouring both natural woodlands and civilization as it expands, the remnants of a naga empire, goblins who seem to be (perhaps unknowingly) spreading a plague of giant fungus, etc. The guy's got some good ideas, but they're frequently lost amid the sex scenes.
This is a fun one. Though I no longer play in Mystara, I still crib lots of stuff from the gazetteers. Just last night I was pulling stuff from the Ylaruam one for my homebrew setting.
Of all the gazeteers to review, you had to pick the one about the number one murder-hobo race from the '80s. Many a DM had tried unsuccessfully to ban the chaotic evil halfling assassin!
You have reminded me another one of the reasons my D&D interest waned in the mid-1980s. Some people got bored with Tolkien and decided to play the murderous red clocked halfling-type in the 1973 film, don't look now. Today, you better have a darn good rationale for wanting to play an "assassin" in one of my game... still the answer is probably "absolutely not".... while I thinking that I made a mistake asking you if you wanted to play in one of my games...grrr.
Unless I can send the party of assassins and paladins to a Kender village and try to enjoy the resulting slaughter, (evil grin). Sorry, I'm opinionated and intolerant when it comes to these matters, but at least I am honest about it. That's not the type of D&D I play.
I noticed the 2nd edition Complete Book of Necromancers is demanding an insanely high price these days. Any chance you might pick up the PDF someday and do a review? I am picking up the PDF myself as I doubt the contents demand the two hundred dollar price tag.
I think the discount should be half price, cause ya know. Serious question: I've never seen any rules for role-playing a child character. Would halfling stats work? Or do children get minus to certain stats like strength and wisdom?
I remember saving up for n buying all the Gazeteer series when they came out. Only one I didnt get was Ethengar khanate. Still have them. My favorites were actually Karameikos offcourse, but then Irendi w its ships rules n fun add really for tourism to Irendi n the Minrothad guilds w its trade system. Also loved the Orcs of Thar n actually had a Hobgoblin player. Love the series ❤️
In AD&D, a human could start as young as 14, which is the bottom of the Young Adult age category and gives you -1 Wisdom, +1 Constitution. If you want to play elementary school kids I'm afraid Gygax leaves you on your own. Realistically, those stat mods are extremely tame, but I suppose PCs are supposed to be exceptional.
Question: Which published fantasy rpg with a d6-only mechanic is the most DnD like? The idea is that it uses a singular core dice mechanic to streamline play that just happens to only use d6's.
GURPS, or The Fantasy Trip if you want to keep it simple. I prefer TFT myself these days, at least for dungeon crawling. There are loads of others out there, of course.
@@richmcgee434 i would love to see a d6 only retro-clone of AD&D 1st edition. Just the core set along with conversion rules. Oh not 1d6; something with a larger digit range like 3d6, gurps, open d6 (weg), etc.
@@rkcpek It isn't a retroclone, but there's Tiny d6 Dungeon from Gallant Games. Certainly a similar spirit to the rules, and the mechanics don't get any easier.
The video is 18 minutes long. That's about the length of every video on this channel. I covered the material in the book. Not sure what else you're expecting here.
Most unique take on Halflings in D&D next to Dark Sun cannibalistic hobbits.

The City State was wonderful and we used it often for Thyatis city
JE REVE! GOLDDRAGON'S MAIRE:😊
I got all the Gazetteers about 1 month ago. I enjoyed reading them!! Keep up the great reviews! 😊
Look at my Captain! Proud of all your hard work and channel growth.
I love your work! This Mystara series really put it on the map for me setting wise!
Oh my!! Saving this for tonight when I can relax, thanks for the content!
Another great analytical review Captain.
The single greatest fantasy heritage ever to exist! I love this book in all its goofy glory!
Ha! Why am I not surprised! Yes, it is pretty awesome.
Oh come on, the species in Orcs of Thar are at least as goofy.
@@richmcgee434 Absolutely, but halfling's trump everything in my book

Very informative video as always! I was looking into getting some POD copies from the Gazeteer at Drive Thru RPG.
Nice one Cap. I just got the PoD of Orcs of Thar and it’s pretty great! Here is hoping for an end to the plague years and return to in person games.
Never would have discovered this without your review, my table thanks you

Captain once again thanks for another great review and a good tip on ways to spend my extra money.
I saw this way back when it was first published, but thought the idea a little silly. Thanks for enlightening me.
So that's why I call my Halfllings by another and shorter name! I just forgot I had glanced over this product in a shop but never purchased it.
The gazetteer series is so cool, thanks for another great review! Keep it up Capt!
I miss my copy of this one. Loaned it out to someone decades ago and never got it back.
Well now you can!
well done my liege
I picked up a copy of this in late 1998 for $1. Best Buy at a yard sale 🤣

Glad that you enjoyed. Now that I have them all in proper print format, I'll be able to deliver!
